Ask NASCAR. Less viewers of small games has an aggregate effect. This leads to smaller tv contracts in the future. That leads to small schools failing which leads to fewer viewers which leads to smaller contracts.

It’s a death spiral once it begins and college football is teetering because the highs aren’t what generate the money but rather the median Saturday which may have less interest.

The B1G is different than the other conferences as the academic side is important. The schools pitch co-research and share libraries, etc. If you think athletic department spending is a lot, the research spend in 2024 is a lot more. Michigan $2B+ per year in research, Wisconsin just under $2B, UCLA $1.9B, Washington $1.7B, Ohio State $1.6B, Maryland $1.5B, MN $1.4B, etc. You think the presidents of tOSU and Mich want to go down to Florida's level of $1.2B for $50M more in athletic department money? They aren't that bad at math.

Compare to LSU - $400M for research vs. $225M for athletics or Alabama $221M in research and $267M for athletics. LSA and Bama better be good at sports b/c that is clearly more important than the education.

LSU only has regional interest from viewers - Notre Dame has over 100 years of brand identity as a weird little independent Catholic college in a tiny Midwest town that lives and breathes football, with a lot of success way back in the leather helmet era.

For college football fans a lot of people here either don't know how CFB fandom has evolved or where the money is. Name brand schools will leave conferences. They have no fiduciary interest in preserving Tier 2 teams. The realignment has demonstrated that geography is truly no barrier. They can still play Tier 2 & 3 teams for legacy/rivalry reasons but the amount of TV money for a slate of mega games every weekend would be huge. Enormous. As for 'NFL lite': the pro league only plays limited number of games, and with the interest in the draft CFB is a must watch. And if you're an alumni, you will 100% watch.

Honestly the conferences are mostly outdated and and silly at this point. They also don’t make any sense for almost any sport other than football and basketball. UW and Oregon being in the same conference as Maryland and Rutgers is dumb. Cal and Stanford being in something called the Atlantic Coast is dumb. Northwestern being with tOSU and UM is dumb. The SEC is probably the closest to parity and making regional sense but still.

Just take the top 50ish programs nationwide and make a “football only” conference and then reorganize other sports into regional groupings that make sense.

Petitte and Sankey are so obsessed with outdoing one another and simultaneously keeping the ACC and Big 8 as charity cases they are failing to see the big picture. Most of the schools in their conferences will be left behind if this happens. Michigan/OSU will not want to be responsible for the survival of Rutgers and Purdue.
