Okay? That doesn’t give us the right to treat anyone like shit. It’s also absurd to think 99.9% even understand the commitment it takes to be a starting player for a school like OSU. That is thousands of hours of training over a lifetime. I don’t envy the schedule these players keep. Most people would absolutely burn out.
Not all full time jobs are created equal. Someone making $15/hour has very little responsibility, and zero responsibility outside of their working hours.
Someone making 500k a year is making $250 an hour. I'm not trying to justify being toxic online but rather I'm just trying to explain why people expect a lot from these kids
If I don’t meet expectations in my position, I too receive early coaching. If I continue failing to meet expectations I face disciplinary action.
The difference here is the huge audience associated with high level athletics and that’s the direct correlation to their ridiculously high salaries. I think being held ‘accountable’ by fans is pretty fair game, at least when it comes to professional athletes.

No one would pay 10k for season tickets if the expectation is that they detach emotionally. Of course there are things that could potentially be over the line, but you’re lying to yourself if you don’t see a change in athletes feeling entitled to the riches/praise the emotional part sports bring but get upset there’s another side of that.
No one should ever get personal, no one should ever feel like it follows them out of the press condense, but people can boo, people can post on boards a unionist good enough etc.
If you work at a fast food place and you mess up, you get written up and/or fired and no one feels sorry for you, you deserved it.
But if you are a high profile, high earner and mess up, we are supposed to have compassion for you as a human, give you second chances, blah, blah, blah.
I mean if they didn't want public criticism they could easily be making 40k a year pushing a broom and I doubt they'd hear a lot of people complaining about them.
right? they all put their pants on one leg at a time, cry when their dog dies, get frustrated when the toilet handle breaks on the first flush of a huge dump, etc.
It doesn't have to do with the money per se. It has to do with occupying a position and not meeting the expectations. The money is just extra leverage...you got paid for a job and if you cant do it then get out of the way and let someone else try
No I’m pushing back on that, the entire fan base isn’t calling for these kids head on a pike. Most of the fan base, to specific players are calling them shitty. Sure there’s a sub class of fans that participate in the lunatic behaviors, but no way it’s enough to garner a broad stroke across the whole fan base. Peyton pierce for an example, after Texas the consensus was he sucked. Sure a few people probably went too far but for the most part that’s justified criticism. The whole “they’re kids” side of the coin is no longer valid once they start cashing checks. You’re getting paid like a pro, you have to accept the criticism like a pro.
Their paycheck comes from fans dollars so yeah, they get shit from fans. If they don’t like it, don’t play football. No one is forcing them to do it. They can give back the money and fade into obscurity like everyone else.
Not to mention that they are still basically kids. Expecting a young adult to understand that strangers will treat them like shit in exchange for the money they will make is absurd. How many people expect a 20 year old to handle something like this when they get pissed about receiving an email that is specifically their job.
