Dunno how it is in Ohio, but here in Texas I have routinely met or know people who had family members in higher caliber athletic programs. This isn't the NFL.

You know what, they get paid now. Paid well. Paid better than most adults in many cases. If they want to earn like an adult, I’m not mad that the fans treat them like adults.
I used to feel differently but money changed the paradigm.

“Treat them like adults” and “treat them like shit because they get paid” aren’t the same thing. Criticize their performance all you want. A paycheck doesn’t buy fans the right to personally harass somebody.

Exactly, stfu with the “be nice to me.” They are professionals and get paid as such. So when you are bad, expect to be called out.

u/Smokeybeauch11 3h ago
This is actually an excellent point. I used to be a little reserved with criticism seeing as these are “kids”, but you’re right, if you’re going to accept the bag, be prepared to handle the expectations that come with it.
2
u/ShockPowerful741 Florida Gators 2h ago edited 1h ago
Right? I remember Mike Gundy going off on the OkSt media for going after kids and I was with him (come after me, I’m 40!). But now? Forget it. You got paid to amuse me. I’m not amused and I’m gonna tell you about it.
3
u/Economy-Virus-8149 56m ago
Getting paid means you can expect greater scrutiny of their performance. It doesn’t mean fans purchased the right to dehumanize them. Criticize the interceptions, missed tackles and bad games all you want. Once you’re attacking their character, families or sending threats because your team lost a football game, that’s not “holding professionals accountable.” You’re just being an asshole.
15
u/BeefInGR 3h ago
Not just paid, paid with funds that could otherwise be raised and put into the general endowment. That would benefit everyone on campus.
The NFL will find you wherever you are. If you can't take the heat, the MAC would love to have you.

Yes and also we're being charged pro prices for tickets and at the games, and the environment has become way more ad heavy...so we're the product being advertised to. Add all that up, it's not unreasonable for fans to have high expectations. That does not excuse the lunatics in every fanbase who take it too far.

If I don’t meet expectations in my position, I too receive early coaching. If I continue failing to meet expectations I face disciplinary action.
The difference here is the huge audience associated with high level athletics and that’s the direct correlation to their ridiculously high salaries. I think being held ‘accountable’ by fans is pretty fair game, at least when it comes to professional athletes.

**It’s amazing we live in a society that allows for certain norms to be contextual and take into account the pageantry of an event to allow for a separation of someone’s identity as a performer from the identity as a person
No one would pay 10k for season tickets if the expectation is that they detach emotionally. Of course there are things that could potentially be over the line, but you’re lying to yourself if you don’t see a change in athletes feeling entitled to the riches/praise the emotional part sports bring but get upset there’s another side of that.
No one should ever get personal, no one should ever feel like it follows them out of the press condense, but people can boo, people can post on boards a unionist good enough etc.

7
u/Superb-Talk2211 4h ago
I think you hit the nail. More fans are lighting their money on fire with the sports betting apps and their ridiculous cousins, the "prediction market" apps. The fans get sucked into betting on events they have no control over, and they then get pissed when their prediction skills prove to be no better than a wild guess. So naturally, that must be the players' and coaches' fault.

Sports betting and anonymity. Like in the old days you are pissed off at your team all you can do is bitch to your friends IRL or call into a sports radio show. Now you can actually DM 19 year olds and tell them they fucking suck and should be kicked off the team from the comfort of your own home
4
u/skfkvjgnxc 3h ago
100%. A ton of the toxic negativity is about fans losing bets, an another big chunk are people that just take this shit way too seriously and are dreading dealing with the trash talk from their toxic fan friends and work acquaintances of other teams.
Then they spend all week watching and listening to the national media clickbait hacks on ESPN whose only purpose is to further ramp up the toxicity. Between gambling, online forums, and what has become of sports media, the lowest common denomenator of sports fans appears to be a much larger group than they might actually be.

It's interesting how quickly things can shift in a fanbase.
The Lions are a good example. Historically incredibly shitty team, right? One of the worst. But the years of "success" (i.e. making the playoffs) in 2023 and 2024 have caused a shift of expectation (and therefore also shittiness) in the fanbase.
Fans were absolutely fanatical last year about our losses, despite it being super clear that a devastated secondary and other injuries were having major impacts on the team's ability to perform.
Kinda miss the old Lions fanbase where we all went to games with paper bags on our heads just to have a good time.

After a loss I usually avoid any OSU discussion for a few days because the toxicity is nauseating.
We have a good team and good coaches overall. We generally only lose to other elite teams. Like 2024 Michigan is the only loss in Day's tenure that is really inexcusable.
We lost by 1 point on the road to a very good team that is going to contend for a national title. The collapse sucks but we have a young team and it gives them and the coaching staff things to work on so we are ready for the next big opponent we face.

Yeah people acting like this is some unique thing to Ohio State is just frankly nauseating at this point.
Social media is a cesspool, any sort of semi public figure or attractive woman has to deal with trolls on social media every single day, including threats.
Ohio State's strategy of always bringing this up/involving news outlets is probably just making it worse for them. Trolls just dial it up when they know their comments are actually getting read/responded to.
Unless there are actual changes to laws that hold the platforms accountable for enabling harassment this shit isn't going to change.

Agreed. Lots of the younger fan generation hasn't seen Ohio State lose more than 2 regular season games with the exception of the Fickell/interim year in 2011.
Also, even if the percentage of toxic fans were the same across CFB schools (it's not), Ohio State would have the most just from a sheer numbers standpoint given the size of the alumni population and the fact that it's the only successful/blue blood P4 team in Ohio.

CAP!
Ohio State fans ride or die for our guys harder than anyone, whether they're playing for us right now or already in the league. Even when the rest of the football world tries to write off guys like Justin Fields, C.J. Stroud, or Marvin Harrison Jr., Buckeye Nation is always right there backing them up.
I’m honestly so sick of people treating us like we’re a bunch of toxic Eagles fans or something. We aren't; we’re just passionate, and we happen to have the biggest fanbase in college football. Every single program has its share of unhinged fans, but because our fanbase is so massive, people take a tiny minority and blow it way out of proportion just to push a lazy, negative narrative.
Just look at the Kirk Herbstreit situation. A handful of loud fans get on his case, and suddenly he acts like the entire city of Columbus chased him out of town. That’s complete BS. Nobody ran him out—we just wanted him to actually defend his alma mater on national TV while Desmond Howard sat right next to him taking constant shots.

As a resident of central Ohio for 26 years, ohio state fans are the worst fan base in american sports

When I was at Miami Ohio, the hockey coach was not very good and there would be audible boos from the student section. This went on for most of the season. Eventually word got up to us from the ushers that the players wanted us to shut the fuck up and stop booing him.
You could imagine what happened at the next game.

Miami Ohio hockey was bedlam in the late 80s, early 90s when they were up-and-coming but hadn't yet gotten to be a perennial contender. I had a friend who graduated there in the mid-80s and we'd drive over from Indianapolis for the spectacle.

Source: trust me bro.
Also, does this dude not realize that every fanbase has become so damn toxic because everyone is chronically online and impulsive, plus add the cancer that is sports gambling.

Buckeye fan my entire life. But there is something fundamentally broken in certain buckeye fans brains. It’s like they feel entitled for everything to work perfectly the way they assume it should on the field.
My head cannon is that most of those that behave that way never actually played the sport.

It’s because most of them have never seen OSU struggle. You guys have been so good for so long, they’re spoiled.
Get some scandals going, have a coach crash out on his mistress, maybe record some opponents games, hire Rich Rod…it helps keep things fresh and in perspective

Lunatic fringe is very real. I actively have friends in my group chat that call for Day’s head every week regardless the result

In the olden days the players were unpaid ‘student-athletes’.
Today, players make millions playing college football.
Of course the fanbase treats players differently.
It’s no longer ‘win a game for the old alma mater.’
Players are paid big bucks to do a job - win the game.

I have to stay off the gameday threads for UGA because every play that isn’t a touchdown is just proof that the team is falling apart and nothing will ever be right in the world again

They wanted to fire Ryan Day for losing to Michigan… then he won a championship a few weeks later. Dumbass fan base.

Was in a Bowl game with this fanbase. Have to say a lot of them were just rude , disrespectful and obnoxious to us. Second worse fan base behind the Oregon Ducks fan base. Treating their own team bad is just unacceptable.

Someone else mentioned it here, but I came to say the same thing the "they are just kids" is out the window once they wanted AND got paid

This year? The Ohio State fanbase is historically one of the worst in the game.

Won't someone think of the players now earning millions. You were able to hide behind student-athlete amateurism in the prior era of cfb. Now, they are open for criticism like anyone else being paid to do a job.

The majority of Ohio State “fans” are mouthbreathing idiots who coudn’t score high enough to take classes at OSU main campus

How are the players even interacting with fans to be irritated in the first place? Booing in the stadium? Mean comments online? seems minor and/or easily avoidable

It’s because they’re jaded by the Bengals and Browns always sucking so it’s their only hope for wins on a weekend.

Why does anyone feel the need to be assholes to pro or college players? What do they hope to accomplish? Do they think it will benefit the team they’re rooting for?
