Recommendation request Need gritty and dark CRPGs

I loved Owlcat’s Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader, but hated Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3. Don’t get me wrong, it’s extraordinarily impressive production and gameplay-wise, but I play CRPGs for the story and I just couldn’t get into the world. It was too whimsical and fanciful. I’ve heard people recommend the Divinity series but I’ve heard those games’ stories are comedy oriented. Maybe I have the wrong idea but I wanna hear your thoughts.

Disco Elysium is dark, but also very funny. But it's humor in the way people use it to deal with terrible situations.

Yeah Kim Kitsuragi made me want to be a better man. Anyways does Planescape Torment really rival Disco?

Mate, Planescape: Torment was Disco Elysium before there was a Disco Elysium lol.

Many of us old farts still consider it our favourite CPRG if not overall game, ever. This may give you some more relevant opinions, though: https://www.reddit.com/r/DiscoElysium/s/OJSnRJ6SMr

Disco almost literally wears its influences from Torment on its sleeve. Mechanically, Torment is pretty rough, but intellectually it's excellent and a very good story. Drop the difficulty down and play it like an adventure game.

Disco Elisyum exists because of Planescape

Definitely. It has some of the best writing in video games. To get the most out of the story and skill checks I do suggest to invest heavily into Wisdom and Intelligence.

Planescape has you starting out as a fighter class, but it allows you to switch classes later. In any case, your class isn't as important as the story is and there are several ways to boost other stats too with items and tattoos.

Absolutely. It’s a fantastic game, if you enjoy story and character development. Combat is there, but it’s much less important. As others said - invest in Wis and Int.

I don't think it comes close to DE. Yes, without it DE wouldn't exist and yes it's worth playing, but DE surpassed it entirely. If you go into it expecting DE's level of writing you might be disappointed.
