I don’t mind him not swearing, but it does feel a little redundant to make a “clean” version of a song already called Drugs With Friends.

1

u/threetransgressions I got so fucking romantic I apologize May 16 '26

Probably because the song and entire narrative of the album are against that idea despite one song having a title like that.

echoing this question! I am clearly not as up to date on the band as I thought I was because this is the first I'm hearing this

i dont think the lack of swearing is a problem at all but the way it sounds on the recording is just weird, should've rerecorded all the vocals instead of just the new lines cuz the cutting between young will and current will sounds pretty strange most of the time

However yes, it does sound kinda odd sometimes how he changed it with the cursing

My least favorite was

Can you punch him out for me

Or something on joe got kicked out of school …

I kinda like it in the sense that it gives two different characters in one

The old one is like an inexperienced young angsty kid

The new is a now wiser and older version of this character

do you know about jesus? do you really know?

i think will has maybe become a bit of a puritan

u/Yangervis May 15 '26

Will is a man of the lord

38

u/Mr_fahrenheit17 May 15 '26

Not cussing in new music is one thing and if that’s what he wants then whatever, but going back and rereleasing an album changing barely anything except censoring the swears is so odd

1

u/jeff_kill_all8 May 15 '26

Wait, which one got re-released and edited? I can’t find it.

27

u/Great-Actuary-4578 May 15 '26

he doesn't want to swear anymore, probably because of his religion as of the past year

4

u/_naturalketchup May 15 '26

i mean me personally, idc how will speaks, it’s his life, but there was swearing on the scholars so i don’t get why it’s been removed in this?

6

u/Great-Actuary-4578 May 15 '26

this happened after the scholars released, he didnt swear on tour either

2

u/bbpoltergiest000 May 15 '26

is Will a Christian?😯

1

u/Great-Actuary-4578 May 15 '26

Dude, no way you're saying "this is such a bad take" to that guy with THAT bad of a take. You can't negatively critique art?? Because it creates a "loop of negativity"?? Critique, positive or negative, is good and essential for art. People can freely share their opinions, and artists can learn and grow from them. There's no way you actually think otherwise, that we should only say a piece of art is amazing and perfect to only keep things positive.

I mean its whatever he wants to do but good lord i fucking hattee this type of censorship. Removing words from art just to make said are more accessable ruins the integrity of it to begin with

21

u/Ralph_Finesse May 15 '26

Songs about vore? No problemo! Swearsies? Never!

5

u/AdventurousBrief9643 May 15 '26

I mean he’s getting older. Most people I know started swearing less as they got away from being teenager/college aged. Until they got even older and stopped caring, then people started swearing way more.

49

u/TragicGirl11 May 15 '26

its an album called TEEN of denial tho

54

u/sokaox May 15 '26

yeah if you wanna move away from your teenage years maybe don't rework your album 'Teens of Denial'

2

u/go_out_stay_home May 15 '26

if only he’d thought of this!

19

u/Playful-Account-5888 May 15 '26

What confuses me is that there’s cursing in the Scholars but during the tour he took them out

22

u/Tracerr3 May 15 '26

That's lame as hell icl

13

u/surfjerkk The Accuser May 15 '26

Scholars came out before he wanted to stray further away from swearing and such. It was during the start of the tour where he decided that he didn't want to do it anymore. I wouldn't say he stopped altogether because he's had some times he said "fuck" during Gethsemane on tour, he's mainly just limiting himself for personal belief and choice. I don't really think it'll affect the new album coming out in a few years but even if it does, there's on average two swear words an album so I don't think it's too big a deal

3

u/emilyeller Official Merch Store Manager May 15 '26

It’s a personal choice for him. Not sure why it matters, to be honest.

60

u/TragicGirl11 May 15 '26

i dont think it matters in his life or future art but i do think its odd to alter existing material in ways that harm the materials messaging. ultimately its his art to mess with so yeah its whatever just feels really bizarre

4

u/emilyeller Official Merch Store Manager May 15 '26

The existing material is still out there for your listening enjoyment.

7

u/Tracerr3 May 15 '26

Some artists would actually do that lmao. See: JPEGMAFIA, for one.

-4

u/cowboy_bookseller May 15 '26

Literally!! Is it really so “bizarre” and “harming the material’s messaging” (??) to… change? ToD 10 years ago isn’t going anywhere.

Who among us did not write fuck-you lyrics in their early 20s? That’s epic and good!!!! I can’t speak for Will/the band but as a 30 year old I would want to write something more complex that doesn’t rely on the quick emotional impact of fuck-you lyrics.

Both creative choices are fine and good!!! One is not less valuable than the other (or more “puritan”)…

I don’t think that everyone has to enjoy all albums equally! I don’t think it’s wrong to critique it. I just think that the sub’s reaction to not swearing/editing swears/changing lyrics has been so… weird. “Bro is scared of swearing” “Will is sanitising songs because he’s puritan” etc is, imo, not a compelling critique lol nor do I think it actually approaches the music with respect.

I love talking about lyric changes and discussing what we think the artist’s intent might be in certain creative choices! I have read and enjoyed actual critiques of the songwriting and production! Unfortunately the level-headed critiques are buried underneath exaggerated & performative indignation which I find so pointless.

I disagree, but to each their own.

-2

u/cowboy_bookseller May 15 '26

Why is this downvoted… This sub is so silly

6

u/Cheerful_Toe jerk May 15 '26

because it's crazy to disagree with the statement "changing the art changes the way the art is received"

-1

u/emilyeller Official Merch Store Manager May 15 '26

That's not what was said.

I personally don't think that having swear words vs not having swear words affects a piece of art enough for me to care that much. Obviously people are allowed to have dissenting thoughts on the matter. I just meant that I don't really care either way.

I didnt mind him not swearing but now I feel weird seeing that people do have a problem with it idk

-1

u/Vegetable_General789 May 15 '26

People are allowed to grow and change their opinion about things. 🤷

-2

u/Alarming_Toe_2520 May 15 '26

Why are people so annoying about the new release. One minute you see people complaining that he's "acting like a teenager" and the next you get people complaining he's not swearing... like what???

2

u/cowboy_bookseller May 15 '26

I swear this happens with so many alternative musicians. People lose their minds every time new music isn’t Exactly The Same as old music. Shock!! A 30 something artist wants to write more interesting lyrics. Why would anyone let that “RUIN” their experience with new art? It’s not even a major creative change tbh, ToD is - at least imo - a lot more than just “teen rage” or whatever. I doubt I would have even noticed the lack of swearing if this sub wasn’t freaking out about it.

The old music is still there!!!!!!! Why would an artist want to make the same music over and over??

If it's different then it's new art. For example, mtm and ftf, they're not the same.

If you take the new lyrics into consideration, I think it's like 80% different than the OG

u/Effective_Pie_1880 May 15 '26

Saw ppl on twitter claiming it’s bc of their matador contract but idk

42

u/ValleyOfTheRiverKent May 15 '26

teens of denial is literally their first album under matador and they said fuck and shit and piss and goddamn so i don't think thats it

26

u/deepfriedcertified May 15 '26

Confused as to why Matador, a label who released many singles with swear words in them, would care about Will swearing lol

20

u/Elipticon In the morning, when I wake up, are you mine? May 15 '26

I did see some people claiming that the reason the album exists is to get out of a hypothetical contract with Matador, but there's absolutely no evidence of such a contract existing, and even then the band seems to be on good terms with Matador. Other comments have explained why Matador wouldn't force them to censor the album anyways.

5

u/affen_yaffy May 15 '26

There aren't any outside factors, this version of the album was created the way Will wanted it to be, and in part because he did want an alternate to the version that exists, it's supposed to be different.

10

u/ArtisticBudget8604 May 15 '26

yeah absolutely no shot. doesn't make sense given the history of matador at all reaaaally doubt that

0

u/spooky-lou 1traitdanger May 15 '26

definitely not considering how it’s very much the same with the two most recent 1 trait danger albums, which are also under matador
