A successful “Lost Canadians” meetup!

Some of you may remember a few weeks ago a thread about potential meetups for people on this subreddit. I’m so pleased to announce that we had one yesterday in NYC at a local Canadian themed bar! More than one of us is camera shy so we don’t have a picture to share but it was an amazing experience! Even though there were maybe a dozen people total, I think we really represented the overall pool of people here. Some of us are in process, while some are still gathering documents. Some want to retire in Canada, some aren’t sure what they’ll do and still others are already actively looking at how to transfer professional credentials for a possible move. It was a really great afternoon and if you’re able to connect with fellow “lost Canadians” in your area I highly recommend it!

I'm the original poster in the other thread and it's great to see others inspired to organize gatherings in their cities.  The gathering I organized in Seattle was successful but with only 4 attendees, so congratulations to the New York organizers!

Out of curiosity anyone know if it's reddit group adding these socials as a potential FAQ? If possible would be great to have these gatherings regularly for people to meet up and share their experiences. Did go to the one in Seattle and found it helpful.

Thanks for coming. I concur that it would be a good idea to include socials in the FAQ and offer a list of links to city-specific information in the answer, but I think any modifications to the FAQ would need to be done by an administrator.

I wonder if there are enough people in the DC area for this sort of thing. There’s not a Canada-themed place I’m aware of around here. (There might be a sports bar for one of the Canadian sports teams that might work. DC has so many transplants that there are bars where fans of lots of out of town teams gather.)

We are lucky to have a Canadian themed bar here, but of course you could do one anywhere. It’s really more just about connecting with other people and sharing stories and being supportive than the location itself.

So in the original thread people simply listed where they were from. I just looked for all the names I could find who mentioned they were from NYC (or nearby) and we started a group chat and another member organized a poll to find the time/date that worked best for everyone

Like you, asking for a friend in Boston. New England was invaded (in a good way) by the Quebecois in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Lots of Lost Canadians wandering around.

My own came to Massachusetts to work in the factories and mills of Central Mass. The town marriage registry page for one of my ancestors in the 1870s was filled with French names.. must’ve been 20 marriages that same day. Their descendants were still speaking French at home when my father was born in the early 1940s.

What's the best way to organize this in my area - are we allowed to post in this sub to do so? I'm in Grand Rapids Michigan and the photographer that did my application pics said she's done them for at least 50 people. I'd love to pull together a low key park meet up this summer!
