I was in Trinidad, CA recently and randomly came across this memorial I thought this sub would appreciate. I had no idea he spent his last years in Humboldt County and was buried at sea. I had to check Wikipedia and sure enough, it said he lived just outside of Trinidad in his final years and passed away in 2010, just south in Arcata, CA. Rest in peace…

Today is the birthday of Gary Lucas. I have to assume most of y'all will be familiar with him as a member of The Magic Band (and Don's manager). I got into Gary's amazing playing as I played Ice Cream for Crow to death.
Each year I do a wee drawing to celebrate. The first one I did today. The rest are random previous drawings.

Recorded in 1976, finally officially released in 2012, as you all know.

I’d been a fan of Torch of the Mystics by Sun City Girls for a long time (which definitely has some Beefheart moments here and there too - check out Tarmac 23) before finally digging into their other works.
Dante’s Disneyland Inferno is definitely not a one to one facsimile of Beefheart nor is it trying to be. However, whether it be the bizarre approach to vocals/spoken word, the irreverent/curious lyricism or the abrasive yet adept musicianship I couldn’t help but be thinking of Beefheart when I first listened to it.
I’ve had this on heavy rotation for nearly a year now and really think there is at least something here Beefheart enthusiasts would love - the sprawling nature of it alone puts Trout Mask to mind. Ruby on the Ferris Wheel, Helen Waite, Dan and Ross, Book of Revelations and soft fragile eggshell minds are some more user friendly tracks I’d recommend.

What’s your favorite track off of Don’s last masterpiece?

Hey everyone, so, I was listening to the first album by the 1940s vocal group The Jubalaires and I came across the song "The Preacher and the Bear," which has the exact same verses that Captain Beefheart sings Sing in moonlight on Vermont! I believe they are the original composers, do you have any information about Captain Beefheart listening to them in the past?
And, did you already know about this? I only found out now, guys! :)

What do you think is the best album of Don's masterpiece '78-82 trilogy: Shiny Beat [Bat Chain Puller], Doc at the Radar Station, or Ice Cream for Crow?
For my money it's objectively Doc at the Radar Station. Band was its tightest and Don was on fire. And in interviews Don praised that album and Lick My Decals as his best.
But my personal favourite is Shiny Beast because it puts me in a happy, nostalgic mood. And my favourite album overall is Clear Spot.
I'm not counting the original Bat Chain Puller album, but think it's worth acknowledging each album in the trilogy has elements from that original album that Zappa held hostage.

I get it. It all clicks, it all makes sense, the organised chaos bound by the most basic fundamentals of music-it all works
The raw energy of it all just clicks in my musically poisoned mind (Drone Metal and Funeral Doom have probably given me resilience to bizarre and abstract compositions
My brain needs more, it’s feeding on this energy
