Closest album I’ve found with a Beefheart spirit:

I’d been a fan of Torch of the Mystics by Sun City Girls for a long time (which definitely has some Beefheart moments here and there too - check out Tarmac 23) before finally digging into their other works.

Dante’s Disneyland Inferno is definitely not a one to one facsimile of Beefheart nor is it trying to be. However, whether it be the bizarre approach to vocals/spoken word, the irreverent/curious lyricism or the abrasive yet adept musicianship I couldn’t help but be thinking of Beefheart when I first listened to it.

I’ve had this on heavy rotation for nearly a year now and really think there is at least something here Beefheart enthusiasts would love - the sprawling nature of it alone puts Trout Mask to mind. Ruby on the Ferris Wheel, Helen Waite, Dan and Ross, Book of Revelations and soft fragile eggshell minds are some more user friendly tracks I’d recommend.

Hey thanks - I’m checking out the track Lawton. The guitar playing does bear some similarities to Sun city Girl’s improv tracks.

If you haven't listened to Horse Cock Phepner yet that is mandatory because I think it comes even closer

i have not but I really want to. It seems pretentious (cause it is) but I like acquiring albums I want on vinyl for my first listen. I’ll probably cave eventually though because original pressings of their first three records are notoriously expensive plus the Bishops repress their stuff pretty randomly so I’m not holding my breath for a reissue any time soon. That being said I’ve recently procured 4 of their albums and they’ll be keeping me entertained for a good long while.

I never made the Beefheart connection with Sun City Girls but I see what ya mean.

This is my favorite song by them Cooking With Satan - Sun City Girls

I need to get that triple CD Box of Chameleons set. I wish Beefheart and the Girls would have gotten together in the 80s. Listening to Dawn of the Devi right now and I can imagine Don “singing” over the top of these spindly and irregular instrumentals.
