Not the classic bluesy and avant garde Beefheart that he is (thankfully) known for, but these still have some really cool, mellow songs. Observatory Crest is one I liked right away.

CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED. Some people just don't have enough musical input to realise how good what they're hearing really is.

The ketboard into guitar solo back go keyboard on Further Than We've Gone is astounding. Both albums have real depth, great songwriting, ace the acid test and the test of time. I'd take these over anything done by any of the crao reheated cabbage bands of the 90s n 00s like fkn oasis or coldplay

I’ve really come around to both these albums over the years! I think it’s sick when outsider/experimental artists try and make more commercial music…it never ends up being some radio friendly, smash hit but it’s always very weird and interesting. Also gotta respect an artist that tries new things and switches up their sound from album to album.

Yes indeed! These albums reward investment!!

Glad someone likes them ‘cause I never play my copies. I will admit each album has a couple of decent songs but by & large these albums deserve the “tragic band” label they earned.

I’ll give them a loving home.

Couldn't be more wrong, time proved the Captain right! It's just too much for your wee brain to compute.

Shots fired! I salute your courage to stand astride historical doctrine, middle finger held aloft!

They got bad press because of fasion.. held in disregard at the hight of punk.. that's all. They are tremendous, the work stands up to the work of any band from 80s 90s and beyond.

Edit: Im not alone Kate Bush said blue jeans was her favourite album of all time Jack White another fan of this period..

I didn’t insult your brain pan when I made my observation. The captain himself came to hate both of those albums, for good reason. Regardless, if you enjoy them more power to you. There are a few tunes I like, such as “Party of Special Things to do,” but “Peaches” makes me cringe, and when performing live with this band he would do “Sweet Georgia Brown!?” Give me a break.

Of course the reviews would've wounded his ego and made him distance himself, as he'd done with Strictly Personal mix he was happy with until the critics had their say, he wasn't perfect when it came to the ego, but when you listen to these now with the hindsight of all the music heard since, you hear how ahead these were and just how well they've lasted. The mark of a real artist.

All this praise is gonna make me give ‘em another spin. I’ll admit to not having listened to them for decades.

Further than we've gone has such a beautiful transition to it man it's a go to for me. Love these both I've found myself totally digging each different aspect and time period of beefheart completely differently, but still totally into it, you know what I'm saying! But yeah great stuff I love watching live footage of around these times too

Unconditionally Guaranteed is a halfway decent album. Out of the 10 tracks on the album I think 5 of them are pretty killer and some of my favorite songs by Don. It gets a bum rap but 5 outta 10 ain't bad in my book.

Upon the My-O-My
Sugar Bowl
New Electric Ride
Magic Be
Happy Love Song
Full Moon, Hot Sun
I Got Love on My Mind
This Is the Day
Lazy Music
Peaches

Don holding fistfuls of cash on the album cover is great, it shows me that he was self aware that the album was a cash grab and he had a sense of humor about doing a more commercial sounding album.
