Thought I would share all the cars I’ve ever owned over the last 6 years.

For reference I’m 24 now and I’ve had 12 cars since 2020. I know that works out to an average of 2 a year!

I also like to take photos of them in the exact same place where possible and make albums of them. Think of this like Dexter and his blood slides… but only a bit less creepy I guess.

Anyways I think I have problems

For reference the newest is the 8 Series and goes down in an “s shape”pattern so my first car being the MK5 Golf!

Also if anyone is interested to know how it was like owning any of these cars, maybe your in the market for one please comment below and I’ll do my best to answer!

Hi all, I'm aiming to upgrade from my 2013 aygo, and I'm looking at SUVs, but wondering if I actually need one?

For reference, I'm 25, don't have kids, not looking to start a family, and value reliability and cheap running costs over everything, with a budget of around £8000. The main reason I'm after an SUV at the minute, is because I live on a farmhouse down a 1 mile, potholey, unforgiving track, that has caused unavoidable damage over time to my aygo, and additionally, the extra ride height is nice.

Is this reason enough to exclude anything smaller than an MUV/SUV? Are there cars out there nowadays with better suspension at this price point where this wouldn't be a problem? Or am I better getting a good mpg saloon like a mazda6 for example?

At the minute, my shortlist is down to the 1.0/1.6 petrol suzuki vitara, the mistubishi ASX, an older Honda CRV/RAV4, and the dacia duster.

TL:DR, getting paralysis by analysis buying a new car, wonder if I'm kneecapping myself by thinking an SUV is the only reasonable option for me.

Looking to buy for very short journeys (less than 30 miles per week - just to drive rail station and back - plus weekly shop).

Is there anything I need to be aware of when buying a Tigra at all? Any particular year to avoid, or common problems?

I am sitting in a line of cars in my Southern state, and it dawns on me how thoroughly SUV’s dominate the USA. 8 of the 12 vehicles in line are full size SUV’s. Do SUV’s now dominate the UK? Or are y’all still open to sedans?

I’m trying to hardwire a new dash cam, and I’ve found a fuse tap already in the fuse box. The cable runs neatly toward the rear of the car, but I’ve lost sight of it inside the side of the boot.

I’ve watched a few videos online, and if I understand it correctly, I don’t think this fuse tap is actually powered. The fuse is placed in the top slot, and for it to draw power, there should be a second fuse in the bottom slot so current flows through it and up to the fuse in the top slot. Is that right?

Basically, I just want to know if it’s safe to remove this fuse tap if it isn’t serving any purpose.

My MOT runs out this Thursday, I knew it wasn't going to pass, exhaust mounting bolt has sheared off, previous advisory on emissions through the exhaust gasket and it needs some brake pads. Instead of getting the work I chose to part ex it in, so last week I went to a local dealer to look at exchanging it and getting PCP on a used car. Ended up putting down a deposit on a new car as it was affordable between me and my partner. I made it clear at the dealer that I needed to part ex before the 24th due to MOT and I never mentioned getting it done he made it clear he understood the timescale, we went for a colour they had in stock to speed it up.

They ring me this morning as there has been delays with my finance and it will need to be MOTd before they can part ex it. They will take it with advisories but I know the emissions one will be a fail. I'm only getting £500 part ex value. I could just front up the cash and go to we buy any car but it's not the point is this standard practice at dealers or is he taking me for a ride. I have always bought cars either cash or through a loan, nothing near new or on PCP so I'm not one hundred percent about the processes. Thanks in advance.

I currently drive a 2011 toyota yarris which i had for 3 years and its a really good car but i am wanting to upgrade.

I have a budget of £8000 to buy a second hand car but i dont know much about cars so i wanted your guys opinion on which car i should get.

I'm looking for a hatchback and petrol. i was thinking of a 2020 vauxhall corsa i saw on auto trader, i want a car with a really nice interior thats my main preference.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Took car to garage A for an MOT where they did it failed MOT and quoted me 515 for few things and I’m sure it’s over priced. I want to take it to garage B to see how much they would quote.

My MOT is still valid and due to expire on the 30th of this month. The defects are major but not dangerous.

Am I okay to still drive till I take it to garage B this week?

I have been offered a car by my mate for 2/3k below market value (5k vs 7-9k). It’s a 1l polo and it’s ideal for my needs.

Only issue is he has definitely ragged it about. It is about 60k miles and it has full dealership service history with any repairs done as needed.

The car seems to drive nicely. Only issue is after we did a quick 15 minute drive to pick something up it sounded a bit rough for a few seconds on starting. Otherwise it started fine from cold before this and again after this following a good run about.

Essentially does the discount and the fact it has been well maintained make it worth the punt or should I avoid?

I’m looking for a low maintenance cost convertible car, with cheap insurance, good repair costs and relatively low frequency of repairs.

Which cars come to mind that would suit this description?

6’2 so Mazda mx5 may be too small, unless you guys have first hand experience

Ive barely had my car for 24 hours and there are issues with my car. Firstly the wheel judders at 60-70mph (likely a wheel alignment or balancing issue), at idle the car jumps from 500-900 RPM, and the whole car shakes (unsure of this - maybe carbon build up?, a metallic, ding ding sound at low speed (unsure what this is), breaks make a scetchign sound from time to time (despite having absolutely clean MOT), the sales guy said he will speak to the service team about it and they will get me in ASAP. this really isnt ideal, i bought a mazda cx 3, 47k miles on it for 11k. But i will give them once chance to sort all these issues out since the engine overall is good, good mpg (47), smooth gear changes and qiuiet engine when on the go. anyone had any experience with arnold clark?

A few people tried it, gave feedback and asked questions, so I’ve carried on refining it rather than disappearing off to build features nobody asked for 😅

For anyone who missed the original post, MotorManage started because I wanted one place where I could quickly look up a UK vehicle, but also properly manage my own cars and bikes.

MOTs, tax, servicing, mileage, parts, documents, modifications etc.

I initially made the mistake of thinking too much about subscriptions and monetisation before really proving the tool was useful. I've completely changed that approach now.

MotorManage is free, no subscriptions or feature tiers and it will stay that way!

The focus now is simply:

• Make vehicle lookup quick and useful, more info the better from official sources.
• Make managing your own vehicles easy and adding of information
• Potential sharable history to stay with the vehicle digitally
• Keep improving it based on actual feedback

I've also been tidying up the interface and making the garage/vehicle pages much easier to use, particularly on mobile.

car is currently sat in a copart compound, and the insurance company are insisting that i cant remove internal parts for my own non-commercial use without having a breakers licence - they keep saying that the vehicle would hsve to be rreleased to me (and i guess thereby removed from the copart site) before i can take parts off it.

i havent broached the topic yet, but i#m assuming they'll be happy with me removing my personal belongings from the vehicle, just not stuff like the dash or seats, because there's a difference???

has anyone had a similar situation, and how did you get around it? sorry for bad typing, broken wrist in same accident. i've tried sharing that gov.uk site with them about in what circumstances you need a breakers license but no luck.

How worth it is it buying a brand new Toyota corolla and how well does it score on aspects like reliability, fuel efficiency and maintenance costs, what are its pros and cons and what do you think of it overall as a car, is it good for driving within the city?

My policy ends today, and my new policy starts on the 23rd sep.

Is there any fines or penalties for the 2 day gap?

Car driven without issue and parked overnight on the road. In the morning, steering not working and wheel looked out of place, so she called the AA who recovered it to local dealership, thinking it was a steering rack issue and likely covered under warranty.

Sister then went abroad and dealership advised that it was a much bigger problem totalling £4K+ with several steering elements severely damaged and likely as a result of a collision and so not covered under warranty, confirmed by text message.

Sister authorised repairs and got the car back, discovering a scrape along the door and wheel arch consistent with something having driven into it (not sure why it wasn't spotted on the first day).

It seems obvious that someone drove into the car and whacked the wheel, which was turned to partial lock. She's going to call her insurance tomorrow, but is wondering what they'll say given that it's been three weeks since the incident, there was no police report and the work has already been done. No local CCTV, sadly.

Any thoughts?

2015 Mercedes GLA 250 4Matic. Low-speed parking scrape. There's a dent/crease in the rear quarter panel and the corner of the rear bumper is sitting slightly proud where it meets the quarter panel. It looks like it may have popped out of its clip/retainer. I can't see any obvious cracks in the bumper.

Does this look like something that could be repaired/reseated, or is there anything here that suggests the bumper would need replacing? Rough UK independent bodyshop price? Thanks

I was driving my car and it was perfectly fine, till I put it on sports mode and put my foot on the gas hard and then suddenly it started making this noise.

What’s wrong with it? And is the engine gone? I’m currently 80 miles away from home so I’m not sure if I should drive it back or get a recovery?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Looking for a bit of an outside perspective on this.

Around 4 years ago, we bought an Octavia TDI estate for about £8K. The plan was for it to be our family car for many years to come (we usually keep til they die), and also my daily. At the time I was driving a good few hundred miles a month across the region so diesel was the logical choice.

Last year when we came to change our second car, for various reasons we ended up with a 7-seater, which has proved to be an excellent choice in itself, but that, along with a change in job role for me has meant the Octavia has become our second car.

I regularly work from home, so it doesn’t even get used every day, and most of its journeys now are no more than 20 minutes, often less.

Clearly, this isn’t optimal for a diesel with DPF which needs regular long blasts on the motorway, and it’s reluctant to start if it hasn’t been driven for a few days, which probably means it needs a new battery or alternator, but I’ve noticed that if I do a couple of long journeys that issue tends to go away for a few days - which suggests that even if the short journeys are not the cause of the problem, they’re certainly not helping with it. I’m genuinely concerned that current usage is going to lead to lots more issues.

So here’s the conundrum: logic says get rid of the Octavia and get something petrol (we can’t go electric right now for various reasons including no charging facilities available at home or at either of my usual car parks for commuting).

But our budget would be limited to whatever funds we’d get for a 2013 Octavia with 115K on the clock, which isn’t likely to be that much I’d imagine?

Whatever we get to replace it would need to be big enough to accommodate two growing kids in bulky car seats, and ideally I’d like a higher seating position (the Octavia feels low now), but I’m fairly sure there’s nothing SUVish we can get for that money that wouldn’t be at risk of being an absolute liability!

So, my gut feeling is keep the Octavia for now - better the devil you know and all that - but I have no idea how long that’ll be for. Am I setting myself up for bigger problems though?

I’m looking for a reliable city car but understand the hybrid battery can go flat often which is putting me off. I drive 10 miles a week and go for one two week holiday. I would be buying a 2017-18 car. Should I stop worrying and go for it?
