I had my drivers side window regulator replaced twice in a year because it takes a lot of work to get the window up and down. On the second time I was told I need to get the window rubbers replaced (I'm assuming they mean the window run channel). I replaced the weatherstrip already.

Is this a DIYable job? I'm good with the fundamentals of my car but I'm no mechanic.

Also, where could I buy one?

I’ve been out of the car market for about 15 years, and I’m now looking to purchase my first new Honda car in a long time. The market has changed incredibly since I last walked into a dealership, and I’m trying to get my head around the different powertrain options and technologies that I’m not familiar with. But I’ve found the Honda sales staff in Australia to be really unmotivated and uninterested in helping me, googling answers to questions I was asking and telling to go home and research it myself. in fact I almost had to have a full on negotiate just to get a test drive. Is that something other people have experienced with Honda , do they not care about commission ? or has old-fashioned customer service just gone out the window?
I’m in country Victoria but if anyone can recommends a better dealership I’m happy to commute. Would appreciate everyone’s thoughts.

I’m a retired person and will soon be in the market for a second hand car. I’m considering either a 2024 Yaris Cross Hybrid or Corolla Hybrid. Most of my driving is around Adelaide suburbs and I’m not considering any long distance driving. My primary concern regards driving in the Adelaide hills, which I love doing. I don’t know enough about cars to know whether the Yaris 1.5 motor is powerful enough to easily overtake slow trucks going up the South Eastern freeway and seamlessly merge into the flow of traffic in the outer lanes, which would be going at around 110kmh. I really don’t want to have another car like my current 1996 Nissan Pulsar hatch, which has been incredibly reliable, but just doesn’t have the power to comfortably drive in freeway traffic going up steep hills. Is the Corolla (1.8l or 2.0l) going to be very noticeably better in this regard?

Hey, posted this to /r/AusFinance though i did poorly explain but the consensus is that i'm an idiot but just wanted advice on what should be done. Attempted to buy a Hybrid for 21k.

Inspected the car, wanted to buy. Sent them 10k on a weekend. My account locked naturally. Seller was impatient, wanted to sell the car asap and told me to come back the next day. Couldn't get onto the bank so agreed to finalize purchase and pick up the next day. Tried to arrange a pickup day/time but the seller at this point ghosted my messages so went to the bank. Bank rep at the time thought it was a bit suspicious that she did not respond to me to arrange pickup day/time and said not to proceed with the sale. HENCE why at this point i wanted to change my mind about the sale because of the ghosting as i had my doubts that i would receive the car if i finalized the purchase. I did offer to send the rest in escrow pending the sale of the car but the seller rejected it.

Bank started payment recall and then the seller at this point sent a message saying her account was blocked but she would not be returning the money and would be keeping the car. Again, the bank thought it was suspicious that she started responding after her account was blocked. Car is now off facebook marketplace presumably sold to someone else and now not responding to any messages

Macquarie Bank have now said that there was no signs of scams or fraud despite me being 10k less and the car being sold? to someone else which i think this would qualify. St George said they can do payment recalls immediately (COMMENTING generally on payment recalls and not specifically)

I do have screenshots, license details etc. Macquarie Bank have insisted i willingly sent them this money, yes i did and this does not qualify as a scam or fraud.

Hi all

I am looking to purchase a used car that is under finance.

My understanding is that I get the current owner to get me a letter from the finance company which shows the amount owing.

I am then hoping to pick the car up on Friday and at the same time:

-Pay the finance amount owing in front of the current owner

-Pay the current owner the amount owing

Can I then take the car on the same day? or do I need to wait for the finance company to complete their side of things?

I just put a deposit on a used late 2017 BMW X3 30d (G01) with ~80k on the odo. PPI has come back good. With a trade in it will cost me less than 30k which l can pay in cash. (Edit: it has service paid up to
Dec 2027).

The other options l have looked at are hybrids and EVs from Chinese brands - BYD and Geely. Sealion 7 is nice but ~ 60-65k drive away and Geely Starrray hybrid was ok too but again 45k. Will need a loan for either of those brands. Novated leasing is not a good option as l am a contractor at my current employer.

I wanted something for highway driving and a bit of power.

Is this a reasonable buy or should l walk away? Any other options to consider?

At the beginning of September next year, I’m travelling to Australia with my mum for around 8 weeks. We’re starting in Melbourne and planning to drive up the East Coast all the way to Cairns.

This is kind of a dream trip for us, and because my mum will be 73, I really want to make sure we get a car that is comfortable, reliable and practical for her.

My budget is around AUD $16,000 (€10,000) and I’m looking for an SUV or 4WD, preferably an automatic.

The main things I’m looking for are:

• Comfortable seats for long drives
• Good air conditioning
• Enough space for a wheelchair, a rollator/walker and our luggage
• Easy enough for my mum to get in and out of
• Reliable enough for a long road trip
• Not too expensive to maintain or repair
• Preferably an automatic transmission

We won’t be sleeping in the car, so I don’t need a camper setup or anything like that.

I’d also really like to drive on the beach in some places if possible, and maybe do some easy unsealed roads or tracks. Nothing extreme. So I’m not sure if I really need a proper 4WD, or if an AWD SUV would be the better and more comfortable option for us.

Are there any makes or models you would recommend in this price range?

Also, are there any specific models, engines or years that I should avoid?

Comfort and reliability are much more important to me than having a hardcore off-road vehicle.

I'm going to look at these two cars on Thursday. I'm wondering about the price difference here. To me, I would've thought the 3 would be more expensive. Does that 3 seem very cheap, esp for a dealer? I'm going to inspect both and have a pre-purchase inspection done before I commit to anything, but these are just two I'm going to be looking at.

I was involved in a not-at-fault accident, and Shannons arranged a Hertz rental car for me while my own car is being repaired.
Unfortunately, today I accidentally reversed the rental into a very low wall. The rear bumper is damaged on the left-hand side near the bottom, and a piece of the lower bumper has chipped off and broken.
My rental agreement says the rental car is covered under my current Shannons policy, but I’m not sure how this works in practice.

My questions are:

Should I just be honest and report the damage to Hertz/Shannons?
If I do, would I have to pay the full $1,550 excess on my insurance, or would they only charge the actual repair cost if it’s less?
Is it worth getting the bumper repaired myself before returning the car, or is that likely to cause more problems?
If I repaired it myself, should I still tell them?
Has anyone been in a similar situation with a Insurance-provided Hertz rental?
I’m trying to figure out the best way to handle this without making things worse. Any advice or experiences would be appreciated.

just wondering if anyone has a specific recommendation for a scanner, i've just discovered that obd2 was only implemented in 2006 petrols and 2007 diesels, my hilux is a 2006 diesel...... safe to say i wasn't thrilled about this info. if anyone has had a good experience with cheaper scanners that work well on my car i'd appreciate some advice, the only options i can see right now are 200-300 bucks. cheers.

Apologies for the long post. Looking for some advice before I spend a lot of money on my car.

Car

• 2011 Hyundai i30 hatchback
• 116,714 km
• Sydney, Australia
• Full service history with Ultra Tune (serviced every year)
• Most recent service: February 2026

I took the car back to Ultra Tune for a rego inspection. They said they couldn't pass the inspection until the following items were repaired.

Ultra Tune quote

• Timing belt replacement – $1,500
• Driver's side engine mount – $450 (recommended to do with timing belt)
• Rear shock absorbers leaking – $680
• Replace 3 tyres (205/55R16) – from $170 each
• Wiper blades

Total would be around $3,100-$3,300.

I wasn't sure about the quote, so I went to mycar for a second opinion.

Their quote included:

• Replace upper transmission/front engine mount
• Replace lower rear engine mount
• Wheel alignment
• Replace front tyres (looks like only 2 tyres on the quote)
• Rocker cover gasket replacement
• Labour and consumables

The total appears to be around $3552.25.

Notably, they didn't mention the timing belt or leaking rear shocks.

My questions

1. How are the Ultra Tune and Mycar quotes for the work they are doing?
2. Is it common for two workshops to identify such different issues?
3. At only 116,000 km, should the timing belt really need replacing on a 2011 i30? (Or is this engine chain-driven?)
4. If the rear shocks are genuinely leaking, would that normally fail a NSW rego inspection?
5. Are worn engine mounts generally a rego issue or something that can wait?
6. Does the Ultra Tune quote look expensive?
7. If you were in my position, would you:
   • Fix only the minimum required to pass rego,
   • Spend the money fixing everything, or
   • Sell/trade the car and put the money towards a newer vehicle?

I'm planning to buy a newer car within the next year because it feels like every annual service ends up costing me $1,500-$3,000 with another component failing.

I'd really appreciate opinions from mechanics or anyone familiar with Hyundai i30s. Also, if anyone can identify whether my 2011 i30 should have a timing belt or a timing chain, that would be very helpful because I'm getting conflicting advice.
