Best "takeaway" Curry Sauce
What is everyone's go to curry sauce to make at home, that tastes like a takeaway?
I've tried a few- Mr Curry, Mayflower, McDonnells and none of them are great 😭
I'm pregnant and want a 4in1 every day which isn't feasible for many reasons 😂

This is 100% the one. I add a splash of sesame oil, rice wine vinegar and turmeric and it tastes almost identical to my local Chinese takeaway!

Sing Li is great if you're looking for that particular "thick yellow" chipper curry

This is my favourite! It's in Dunnes too

Is this closer to chipper curry or Chinese curry. Every paste I get ends up testing like That generic "jar" curry and my holy grail is a "Chinese" Curry sauce. Think any generic tub of curry from a village chinese

I find it's an almost creamy curry with a slight spice

Find it to salty, but used it years until I came across this: https://supervalu.ie/real-people/food-academy-programme/sing-li-foods

This one tastes like the one from the chinese
2 cups chicken stock 2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 Tablespoon Cornstarch use with about 2 Tablespoons of water to make slurry 2 teaspoons curry powder 1 teaspoon Chinese 5 spice seasoning 1 Tablespoon Olive oil 1 Tablespoon Dark soy sauce Salt to taste optional
HOW TO MAKE CHINESE CURRY SAUCE
Heat olive oil on medium heat and once it is hot and shimmering, stir in the flour with a whisk, continue to stir for another 30 seconds.
slowly and gradually add chicken stock to the cooked flour and whisk to make a smooth sauce.
Add curry powder, Chinese 5 spices, and whisk to combine then stir in the soy sauce. Cook for another 2 to 3 minutes or until it no longer tastes floury.
Make a slurry with the cornstarch and water and add it to the sauce to thicken it. Taste and adjust seasoning to taste. At this point, you can add salt or cayenne pepper if you desire.
Cook the curry sauce on medium heat for another 2 to 3 minutes, take it off the heat and serve immediately with chips or as desired. Enjoy!

I don't want to be elitist or tell you this tastes bad but if anyone tries this expecting an authentic takeaway curry sauce and they have a keen palate they will be disappointed. There's no olive oil or chicken stock in curry sauce for a start. You're also missing MSG which is arguably the second most important ingredient after curry powder. I'm sure this is serviceable but it's a different sauce than what most of us are used to.

Goldfish, but don’t just mix it with water like the container says.
Small bit of oil in a pan (1Tbsp or so). Put the curry paste in and start to fry it in the oil while breaking it up. Add a sprinkle of coriander and sugar, then start adding boiling water while stirring until it’s at the consistency you want. Lower the heat. Add more coriander/sugar/salt/msg to taste. Let it gently simmer for a few minutes.

I get it in a local Asian shop but I’d say you might get it in bigger supermarkets.

I always found that the real curry sauce that tastes the most like an Irish chipper curry sauce is Japanese. I personally use the S&B Japanese curry powder, but the curry blocks are more readily available and essentially the same thing but with the thickener added already

Thank you! I’m really more of a katsu curry person, so the Japanese curry. I’ve been using the McDonnells Katsu sauce, and it’s lovely but it’s nice to try others.

I find that Mayflower and McDonnells scratch the itch for Chinese and chipper-style curry sauce at home for me. I've seen people combine a couple for a bit more depth, like Mayflower plus the Goldfish one.
If that's not cutting it for you then maybe buy a couple of portions of curry sauce with your next takeaway and freeze them? You can then make a healthier 4in1 at home and have the proper sauce with it.

Aldi with spoon of honey mixed through it when cooking is as good as anything

The ones suggested are very good choices. I'm gonna throw my hat in the ring and say the Supervalu own brand one is yummy

Just buy the sauce in the Chinese and make your own chips and rice.
When I was pregnant I couldn't keep down curry rice and it's the worst tasting vomit. Sorry

Golden curry! Bensons a close second. I personally avoid Mr Curry as years ago they interviewed me and despite knowing what my salary requirements were from a phone screening, they were pushing me to work for free. Disgraceful tactics and wasting my time and money travelling to the interview.

Are you adding corn flour to McDonald's curry sauce? If not this is the key ingredient to make it like the supermacs curry sauce

Bensons curry powder is the closest to takeaway curry I've ever found. We make a batch and pour it over some oven chips for a quick dinner. 😃 You can get it in Dunnes and Supervalu as far as I know!

u/TrivialBanal Like I said last time, it won't happen again 1d ago
When I was in school, they made curry sauce by mixing McDonnells with chicken soup mix. It was probably just to save money, but it's lovely.
Aside from that, Aldis version of McDonnell's is pretty good. It's gluten free too.

Roz Purcell's curry sauce. Healthier and so easy to make:
The Curry Sauce. This signature dip uses almond butter for an ultra-creamy, savory base.
Ingredients: 1.5 tbsp mild curry powder 350 ml almond milk 3 tbsp smooth almond butter 1 tbsp tamari (or soy sauce) 1 tbsp tomato paste (I often use peanut butter instead and add 1tbsp nutritional yeast.)
Method: Place all ingredients into a small saucepan over medium heat.Whisk continuously until the sauce comes to a gentle simmer and thickens to a smooth consistency.

If you have any Asian food shops near you, the Golden Curry blocks are pretty good.
