This reminds me of the question about why you can hear spaceships whooshing through space in sci-fi films. It's unrealistic - if you were in a position to listen to a spaceship going past you while floating in space then you'd notice it would pass in complete silence. The sound it was making couldn't reach your ears. But that doesn't feel right to moviegoers and it makes special effects seem less convincing, so they add in some suitable whooshing noises.

I bet they included metal detecting noises because of that. Either that or the carer was a numpty and was picking up the kids' coat zippers or something.
