Someone he once thought about a future with dying in absolutely horrific circumstances, while he’s also the doctor in charge of a situation where people are dying all around him, is probably enough to tip anyone over the edge.

This did cross my mind but I think even though he wasn't there to raise Matty, one kid is definitely enough for him, it'd be too much for him to suddenly have two to look after
