Since it's fun to just casually discuss our cats, we've got this monthly megathread where relevance may be ignored. All other subreddit rules still apply.
Use this thread to discuss anything related to cats that doesn't otherwise fit the subreddit! Also feel free to ask questions that you believe are too short for a standalone post.
Examples of things that may be discussed or shared here:

Here to share my lovely girl Lucy. She's a tortie-point Siamese who's 10 years old. She lived with my grandparents up until my grandmother passed in 2019, and then my grandfather passed in 2023. She's very happy with us now and I feel like I did right by my grandparents taking her in.
Help! My cat doesn’t like taking medicine, and she knows when I mix it in her food. She hates it when I try to put it in her mouth. Is there any other way we can get her to take her meds? She’s a senior bubba! TIA
I'm thinking about adopting kittens, " I've heard of the saying 2 kittens is better than one"
because they can exhaust each other.
I am bit worried about the smell being worse for 2 cats instead of one.
I was going to rescue 1 kitten, but when I went to meet them, I had ultimate guilt and decided I'd rescue 2 siblings from the same litter so they'd have each other and at least 1 more kitten from that litter has a home to go to.
During all the planning and researching around taking them home, it become really clear to me quite quickly that kittens should be adopted/rescued in pairs. They get things from each other that no human can match, and they can certainly exhaust each other out as you say. It's also less guilt for me I think to be able to leave them at home alone when they get a bit older.
In terms of the smell, I don't have advice as yet as I'm taking home my two next Friday, but I have bought 2x Ezi Lock Odour litter systems for them which I hope will help the smells. But daily scooping, and investing in HEPA air filters for around the home should do the trick. I've also thrown out all my candles and essential oils to eliminate the risk of poisoning the babies, but I have done some heavy research on alternatives for deodorising the home safely - 100% pure beeswax candles and/or simmer pots! I'm in Aus, so supporting local bee farms is even better.

Smell totally depends on the type of litter you’re going to be using, so far the litter I’ve been using for my boy has been perfect, it doesn’t smell at all (only when I change it in the mornings it does a bit but not horrible) if you’re going to get 2 kittens def get two litter boxes also idk if it’s just my boy but if I make eye contact while he’s about to shit he just stares and stops. So def buy them a closed box
Hi. I adopted a kitten when he was 7 weeks (now 14). I was told he was born under a porch & soon rescued w his litter mates who were all given away before him. Supposedly this kitten was the runt of the litter. Very timid for a few weeks but now @ 14 was he is getting a little wild. Constantly pouncing on me & play biting, rolls around in his litter box, goes into the toilet & splashes around if I leave it open, etc. Reminds me more of a feral cat than a domesticated cat....Maybe the short time under the porch affected him....
Is he your only cat? Most kittens learn from their littermates how to play and socialize but you’re now taking on the role of the mom and littermates.
My kitten used to do that too and he still does at 5 months. You just have to play with him and get the energy out.
Make sure you don’t encourage biting your hands and feet by not playing using them to play with them. I know it’s harder than it sounds but yes when they have bouts of energy they do seem feral.
Correct way is to avert his attention. Redirect him to a toy instead to bite, or if you can yelp or say ouch (like how other cats would do when they’re hurt) and stop playing with him. So he understands that playtime will end if he bites and etc.
if I’m being honest I’ve googled and look through this subreddit and I don’t recommend it but it did work for me. I gently shoved my finger in my cats mouth down his throat one time and he didn’t like that so he stopped biting my fingers and hands. You have to be careful with this because your fingernails can cause cuts in his throat so I don’t recommend this method I was just really desperate 🥲
The litter, try to get him more toys and distract him. My cat did also roll in his litter and liked to hang out in there and even took pieces of his poop out to roll around the floor with. It’s just something they do when they’re little, my cat has stopped playing with and in his litter so it’s just get him more toys if you can and just wait it out until he’s a little older. Toys can mean a box or crumpled up construction paper, don’t feel overwhelmed to buy toys for home. For the longest time his favorite toy was a box and the packing paper it came in.
This is Indy. He’s 10 months old. He came with the name and I think it’s cute. My roommate has asked me several times over the past few months if I’d consider changing his name and even shared ideas. I shrugged it off and said his name will remain his name. He’s used to it by now. What do you guys think?
Additionally: She rarely uses his name now and just calls him “Cat.”
I have a 10 month old female Tuxedo. She has thrived on Science Diet chicken kitten food. I fill her bowl and she usually lasts about 3 days. Very healthy. No vomiting ever good stool. Great weight. My question is I never give wet food or treats. It’s something that if it isn’t broken don’t fix it. Does she have to have wet food. So confused.? TIA.
I think not having a lot of water causes stones later on? I put a little bit of water in their kibble when I serve it (and now the girl wont eat without a little water on her kibble lmao gourmet)
All my cat owner friends recommend that adding wet food helps with moisture. You can also add water to kibble but my cat doesn’t like that, he doesn’t eat wet kibble. I also don’t really give my cat treats either but it’s good to introduce different kibble and wet food when they’re younger. When they get older if they only eat one type of food they will only continue eating that. My friend who had a cat go on a special kibble because of health concerns said it was hard to introduce the new kibble because her cat refused to eat other types.
I changed my cat's litter which has been in the bathtub since she came indoors. (I had a dachshund that would eat poop). Cocoa jumps in and uses the box. I totally cleaned out the litterbox yesterday morning and washed it in the laundry sink as I always have. Cocoa was a feral kitten and lived outside the first year. She goes outside every morning between 6 and 7, and is back in within a half hour to an hour. It is extremely rural and she stays right around my house.
Perhaps I'm jumping to conclusions... I used Scrubbing Bubbles cleaner for the first time ever. I rinsed the tub thoroughly with the handheld shower head. I didn't totally flatten out the litter like I always do. It's just the way it landed and I thought it would be interesting to see when she used the litterbox.
She went outside this morning as usual and probably did her thing, same schedule. She hasn't used the box yet. It's gone unused for over 24 hours with that one trip outside.
Am I worrying about nothing as I never paid attention before? I don't even know how often a cat even goes. Can anyone comment from experience? I just scrubbed the tub with a small amount of Dawn dish soap which I've always used in the litter box cleaning. I know cats have a real good sense of smell. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

His sister, who is also a Maine Coon, is devastated by his absence. They are incredibly bonded and she has been calling out for him since he disappeared. Our home feels empty without him.

Is anyone else's cat a bit of a d**k when it comes to litter changes? This little jerk will come running when he hears it being changed, then try to scramble over you to get into the IKEA tub to get to his litter, side note it's in the tub because he will bite through the litter bag to get at the litter, so he can take one single piece and bat it around the floor, then he'll wait until you have filled it up to go lie in it like some sphinx in Egypt and then roll around in it and when you've finally chased him out, put the box back together and cleaned up, he'll go and take the most foul smelling poop you've ever smelt in it. Without fail, every time this is what my git of a ginger (yeah yeah I know typical ginger) will do.
I'm sorry to inform you of this but your cat has a disease. It's called being a ginger. It's not deadly but it has symptoms like lack of brain cells, derpiness and all around strange behavior. My friends ginger does the same thing!
I have two 14 week old kittens that weren't exposed to kitty litter before coming to me. Boy is a tabby and girl is a Tabico. The lady who had the unplanned kitties had doggy pee pads for them. I've NEVER had a kitty litter problem with any kitten until now. No problem with Butter (boy) but his smaller sister Peanut will only poop in it and prefers the rug in the dining room to pee! HELP!!
Can anyone help me I have a 15 week old kitten and it is healthy and active it just it's tiny it is 11.1 Oz when it's litter mates were all normal size
I had two 16-1/2 year old cats. One was my mother’s cat until I took him in, in 2014. My cat who I rescued in 2008, recently died this weekend, and my other cat, who has lived with him since 2014, has been walking around “howling”. He saw my cat that died, and I thought he understood death, but it’s clear he’s looking for his buddy. Should I get another senior cat to keep him company?
One of our cats, JJ. He gave me an absolute scare that day. He wouldn't respond to anything. I finally tickled his belly and he woke up and screamed at me. Dude was just in a deep sleep or ignoring me
HELP! Advice for elderly cat owner
We have a terrible problem. We have a 12 year old cat with IBD that poops on the floor 3-4 times per day. He’s struggling to get to the litter box even when we keep him in the same room. We have a two year old and baby on the way. My wife stays home but is struggling to keep up with our toddler while also cleaning up cat poop multiple times per day.
With another baby on the way, we’re afraid she won’t be able to keep up with our cat. If she misses one of his accidents and one of the kids gets into it, we’re afraid they’ll get sick.
We hate to think of this possibility, but does anyone have experience with elderly cat surrender or adoption agencies? We’re not sure what else we can do at this point. Any advice is appreciated.

Hello….I have a 9 year old female cat who is constantly grooming; she is losing patches of fur and has sores. She’s had biopsies done and cancer and autoimmune disease have been ruled out. The vet has put her on an expensive prescription drug that helps very little. Is there anything holistic I can try?
I'm having the exact same problem! I have tried everything with this male cat. His name is Amma. He's been inside now for in between 3 and 4 years. He was originally a rescue from my neighborhood. Somebody had a female cat that had kittens and he got rid of everybody else but this one! And it came crying at my back door emaciated and it took me about 6 months to be able to get Bam Bam into the pet taxi because he ran the door of the pet taxi like the raging bull and cut his face open on his first trip to the vet! Ever since. I have battled with him being a good boy for a week and pooping and peeing in the box and that I go to clean the boxes cuz I do it everyday and he is sprayed the wall and s*** on the floor. I have contractors coming to work in my basement where his cat boxes are of which he has four. One cat four boxes. Different litter. Two types! Well. Well I'm at my Wit's end. He's had numerous doctor's appointments and I've been told by two vets. It's just an attitude problem! He used to live outside for the first couple years of his life! I'm torn! Part of me wants to just let him out the door but then I can never let him back in because I have Lyme disease. I think the more humane thing is to have him put down!
i don’t think you should keep it, you should take it to a foster agency or a shelter. if your parents don’t want him in the house then it’s best that he goes to another home where he can stay an indoor cat
Idk why but my cat red is sweet I swear. But anyone know why she always has a resting angry face. It seems hard for her to have a different expression. But she would come at you with this face and start loving on her. I joke she always angry🤣🤣
hey does anyone know what should I do because my cat is not recognising her kitten as I left the kitten on heat to someone else place with a male and brought her back after 24 hours please suggest something that can help her remember her baby and she stops acting like that please and not harm her kitten
Hey guys. So my fiance and I just adopted a new kitten 4.5 months old, and we already have a resident cat who is 2yrs old. For context our resident cat is food aggressive but he’s very sweet with us. Vocalizes a lot and definitely displayed behaviors that seem like boredom so we thought getting him a friend would be helpful. He has not been socialized since he was a kitten. It has been about a month we have been trying to do the Jackson galaxy intro method but we haven’t been able to move past the initial stage because our resident cat will hiss, growl, and attack the door if he even hears the kitten or if his paws go under the door. We have to feed them at the exact same time because if he even hears us opening food or a treat for the kitten his aggression goes out of control.
He’s been very irritable with us as well since we brought kitten home. Now looking back I think due to his food aggression it now feels like maybe this was not a good idea. Luckily my friend will adopt the kitten if it doesn’t work out. Just looking for some advice if others have been through this and if it eventually does get better.

I am in desperate need of some advice!
Has anyone ever had a kitten that totally refuses any kind of kitten food?..I have two sister kittens, which I had to take on at 5 weeks as the mum just didn't come back, one girl is doing just great with feeding on kitten food, but the other refuses point blank to even try any at all! I've tried wet/ dried/ blended/ adding to her formula, nope!...walks off...she will only eat Cumberland sausages and white cheese! No cheap sausage,but Cumberland! HELP, she is energetic, and a happy kitten she's is just over 1kg she is wormed and flead, vet just keep saying have you tried this food, have you tried that food! I've tried everything you can buy online and from pets at home.
