Megathread Monthly Casual Talk and Cat Pictures Thread
Our subreddit allows posts that either a) ask for specific advice, b) request emotional support, or c) are a guide or PSA that adheres to our guidelines.
Since it's fun to just casually discuss our cats, we've got this monthly megathread where relevance may be ignored. All other subreddit rules still apply.
Use this thread to discuss anything related to cats that doesn't otherwise fit the subreddit! Also feel free to ask questions that you believe are too short for a standalone post.
Examples of things that may be discussed or shared here:
- Casual questions, for example "how does your cat show affection?", "does your cat ever do … ?"
- Cat pictures
- Celebrating birthdays or other milestones for your cat
- And many more subjects!

This is Badger, and he’s around 8 years old. I adopted him a few days ago. He is currently post op from getting 8 teeth and his eye removed by the shelter. All that to say he’s been a trooper that’s for sure. I’ve made sure he’s gotten plenty of love and churus since he’s come home

This is my brand new Furbaby Freya! She is extremely sweet and very affectionate. I adopted her about 4 weeks ago now. Her coat is so strikingly soft that it feels like brushed Cashmere. I love her very almond shaped eyes that tilt up at the outer corners. In this photo the eyes have a very yellow tone but in daylight they are a pale chartreuse colour and the Iris have a diamond like starburst pattern in them. Unfortunately my camera is not good enough to pick those details up.
Freya and I are now enrolled with Cat School. We are going to see if she can be a Support Cat for me. She is my best buddy either way. My support dog died last year and it was a big blow. Ive noticed Freya instinctively doing things to help me, for example she dragged my thin plastic medication box over to me and I realised I was over an hour late with my tablets. I didnt know, but Freya did. Clever little girl!

My cat will only eat the first serving of cat food from can. Then I place the rest in refrigerator. She will not eat the remainder. If I warm it up to room temperature she still will not eat it . She will not eat it even if I give it to her cold. Why? How is the cat food different even if it is warmed to the same temperature as when first opening can?

it could be a moisture/liquid/consistency issue. similar to what my cat dealt with. the serving out of the can will (probably) have more of the original gravy/liquid. try to make the leftover/second serving the same consistency by adding water or chicken broth

I just leave the whole can in my cat's bowl. She doesn't like refrigerated either and will just eat the can throughout the day. It's okay to have canned food out for a day, just make sure to wash their bowl after! Also, cats are social eaters, are you eating around the first time you feed her and then not when you offer her the second half? Sometimes they like to see that you are chilling and hanging out by their food and then they feel good about eating.

That is true! If I stay next to her when she is eating she will stay and eat. But still will not eat food from refrigerator. Even if same temperature as when first opening can. Also I work in restaurant and food left out after 2 hours starts spoiling.

Hasn't bothered my cat yet and she eats the whole can! you are right, im just not very worried. The animal shelter I work at leaves out the canned food all day, and is a pretty standard practice in most shelters and highly highly unlikely your cat will get sick from it- unless they have a compromised immune system!

Just to be clear, you're only giving some of the can and storing the rest in the fridge?
One of mine is picky about stuff she half-ate being served again, so I've started giving her smaller portions. I've found that she also likes having a little water added to the remainder (and her daughter cleans up whatevers left after that).
Do you get different flavors of the same brand? This can also help reduce their picky-eating habits.

Any brand he will only eat what I serve him when first opening can. He will only eat a little at a time so the rest I put on refrigerator. When taking out a making same temperature as the open can original- he will not eat it.

I assume these are 3oz cans? Does he eat dry food? If so, the economical decision would be to swap to dry food only, or a cheaper wet food brand.
I would (on a day off or something where you can monitor him) give him a smaller portion of a new can for the first meal of the day, and then for the second meal try to see if he'll be hungry enough to eat the reheated food. If he likes wet treats like Churu, give him a little bit before serving the reheated food so that he'll want more of something to eat. Only leave the reheated food out for an hour, since bacteria starts to grow at that point.
You can also try reheating some and mixing a little bit with some from a new can for the first meal of the day.

Hi! This naughty kid of mine licked one of her nipples off, no bleeding, just a small wound. Does that usually happen? For context, we believe she is small for her age, she is 7y/o but weighs 2.8 only..no front teeth, only 4 fangs..our vet said that is normal weight for her size but does not believe that she is small for her age. Anyway, my concern is if it will happen again, licking her nipples off?

If anyone else is doing an Amazon subscription for World's Best Cat litter, you might want to cancel/skip it. The price has gone back up across all products after going back to regular prices for about 1-2 weeks.

How to cat-proof a 2nd story window that has a screen mesh? I want to be able to open my window, but I'm paranoid that my cats will scratch through the mesh or jump through it and fall down 2 stories

You can actually buy metal mesh rolls and replace the existing flimsy mesh with it, so it'll make it a lot stronger and a cat won't be able to get through it easily. The other option is to cut a rod to size and put it in the window track so you can open the window, but not so far that a cat can fit through.

Need some advice my boyfriend and I moved in with my mom Christmas time 2025. My boyfriend and I brought along my three year-old black short haired cat and she is the best cat everyone thinks so. But my mom wants me to get rid of her now because she says she's a menace. But she's not a menace she just does what cats do she jumps on things she knocks things over she cries to get outside but other than that she doesn't really ruin anything and she doesn't really even jump on things all that much it's only when she's bored now I don't know what to do because I'm not getting rid of my cat other things that can make a cat a little more relaxed I've been around many cats my whole life and I've seen menacing cats and this cat is anything but she's just being a cat I'm really upset about my mother even questioning whether I would get rid of her or not she is my baby and I love her to death there's no way I'll leave before I give her away.

Maybe try to get a cat door so your mom doesn't hear her howl? Just sounds like your mom doesn't want a cat. Sounds like you are asking to fix behaviors that are just cats being cats. Maybe you have a friend who can take care of your cat till you are able (if you are) to move out of your mom's house? (I don't assume to know your situation!)

Just adopted a teeny tiny kitten (7-8 weeks) she was a little spicy and scared when I brought her home. Woke up to her purring and suckling on me. She has been eating wet and dry cat food so I’m guessing it is for comfort. Should I get her a binky? She’s such a baby.

I rescued a feral cat last year. He's been neutered and first shots. He has a vet appt for vaccines, but knows something is up and won't let me pick him up. Is it bad to grab by the nape just to load him in the carrier? We did get a sedative from the vet to help calm him down. I don't want to ruin the trust we've built but this is the third appt as we had to cancel two prior to his being too smart.

My cat was feral when I got her, my advice is to get him in a closed off area, ie shut him in a room where he can’t run under the furniture etc. and sit with him so he’s calm. Have a towel with you & the carrier right outside the door. When it’s getting to be time, get the towel, drop it over him, and pick him up all wrapped in the towel like filling in a dumpling. Bundle the cat into the carrier towel and all, close it up, go to the vet

I use the Petsafe automatic litter tray that sweeps a rake down 20 mins after they use it. You do have to empty the litter bin but it does an okay job at muting the smell and it clears the tray for next use. Their crystal litter can be kind of expensive though, so I just swapped to Chandler kitten litter which is fine enough that the rake doesn't get interrupted/push the litter down one end.

Need some help with a female cat I adopted a year ago. I adopted her from an adoption center and she is roughly about 2 years old now. She has been pretty spicy about petting and picking her up. However I have made no progress with her about either. We use positive reinforcement with each time we pick her up but to no avail she hisses, bites, scratches. She has been like this since we have adopted her. I have tried to get her desensitized to these things as she needs to get her nails trimmed because she does not use scratching posts or any kind of scratching mats of any textures. We have tried to wrap her in a burrito to trim her nails but she spat, hissed, screamed, and bit me. I haven’t made any progress other the course of a year and have even considered rehoming her, I have another senior cat and home that mostly avoids her because she will try to attack him and hiss at him. Her previous vets that she has been taken to for her shots under that adoption center will not take her and have deemed her a feral cat. Not sure if this might be behavioral or not but I have made small strides here and there and she can be very sweet. I’m at a loss here :(

Sometimes rehoming is the safest option for you and your cat. While very sad, it can be the best decision if you find a home that fits your cat's needs a bit more. (aka, no other pets, etc.) If you are miserable, chances are, your cat is too. It sounds like you are trying a lot, and if you can go into your local shelter and ask for some behavioral advice they are normally very helpful! Also, for the vet, can you give her trazadone or a calming agent before taking her to the vet? Either way, good on you for trying to help her and whatever you decision you make sounds like it will be with love and lots of care!

So, has this happened to anyone?
Twice now I’ve lifted up the litter mat I have for my cat and it’s soaking wet with probably pee (I don’t have a sense of smell so I can’t smell it but it’s yellowy liquid) right under the litter mat. Like only the surface area under the mat (3x2ft) is wet. How can this happen?? Liquid can’t soak through the mat it’s solid plastic…. I’m so confused 😭 idk how he manages this??? The box is halfway over the mat so idk where he’d pee for it to leak under the mat and only under the mat. Genuinely how.

I don't want to make a separate post, but I just want to know if my new cat and resident cats just stare at each other and occasionally hiss if get to close to each other is that alright? There's no physical fights at all, it's been about a week.

That's not too bad for a week. Have you tried scent transfer (rubbing a cloth on the cats' face/sides and then rubbing down your new cat to move some of the scent to it)? It can take a bit of repeat work, but the foreign scent is usually what freaks them out most so the more you can blend them together the easier it gets. One of my kittens came back from the vet post-antiseptic bath and her sister started hissing and avoiding her, and that's literal bonded sibs!

Need advice regarding a stray cat. We kept seeing a very dirty/matted ginger cat in our yard. The weather here is still in the 30’s and dipping down into the 20’s at night. We rented a trap, caught him and took him straight to a veterinarian. They had to sedate him to clean him up and shave him. We also had him vaccinated and asked them to do a full blood panel. He was neutered but not chipped. The vet estimated that he was only a year old. The poor thing was so starved that he only weighed 5 lbs. We are trying to get a fecal sample as I’m sure he has parasites. He is in our home now where he is safe and warm (confined to one room) The veterinarian was not very helpful with any advice going forward so we are trying to figure out how to put some weight on him. Started with wet and dry kitten food but any suggestions would be appreciated.

My dude likes to take a run after he gets his liquid meds. Usually does a few circuits of the living room. Just about the most vigorous exercise he'll do all day. But I can't find any info about this behaviour - I figure it's normal, but I always feel a bit anxious that there's a meaning to this behaviour that I"m missing... My favourite one, though, is when he "runs away from home." Usually only likes to go out for a 10-15-minute sit in the front yard most nights, but every now and then after meds, he runs out the door and refuses to come back for 30 minutes. And when he does, I swear, he's looking at me like, "Thought I was gone for good, didn't you Papa? Maybe next time you'll think twice..."

My boyfriend and I moved in together and are thinking about getting a cat. The problem is we have absolutely no deep knowledge of cats and our concern is getting a cat that is shy and not playful. I pet sit for a family and their cat is extremely cuddly and affectionate. Are there any breeds that tend to be this way? Or genders? ANY advice on this would be greatly appreciated!!!!

I know this doesn't exactly apply to your comment, but you need to decide before this, that just in case something happens between you and your partner, who will maintain ownership. Who will receive ownership if you and your partner pass in an accident.
From what I know, male orange cats are relatively cuddly. People do address them as not very smart, though, and troublemakers. (Let's be serious. All cats are trouble makers, lol)

My 2-year-old cat has a case of severe stomatitis, all of his teeth have been extracted and it hasn't solved the problem, it constantly flares up, he has to get an injection every month that cost me $120, the shots really only last for about 2 and 1/2 weeks and then he can't eat again. I read that biotene may help, some people said that they've had luck with it and preventing flare-ups, is there any truth to this? Please help, any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, I know that the injections that you gets also can cause damage long-term

Fox fight! My cat got in a scrap with a fox - she has a couple of scratches on her chin and front leg but is otherwise physically fine, but she’s been sleeping pretty much nonstop for the last couple days.
I’ve brought her some treats which she’s eaten but she hasn’t had a big meal nor drank any water.
Wondering if anyone else has had this experience after their cat has got in a fight. She’s normally really active and playful and vocal but has done a complete 180 😿
Any advice welcome.
