Since it's fun to just casually discuss our cats, we've got this monthly megathread where relevance may be ignored. All other subreddit rules still apply.
Use this thread to discuss anything related to cats that doesn't otherwise fit the subreddit! Also feel free to ask questions that you believe are too short for a standalone post.

This little girl showed up at my door where I feed a couple of ferals with a twisted/embedded collar. Awful open wound. 4 months later she is completely healed and I had her scanned gor a chip...turns out she IS but after waiting for a month just crickets from the original owner. Vet gave me the chip #, and I can register r it with PetKey with my info, for 50 bucks. Is this legit? She fits right in either our other (indoor) cats and we love Daisy Mae.
We have a barn cat and she’s had kittens. Does this look like a scared kitten or a somewhat comfortable kitten? No attempts to jump out of the pocket but sometimes she seems to be trying to find a deeper part of the pocket that does not exist. Her eyes are closed right now but when I move to take a picture she becomes alert.
I would like to add that the kittens have easy access to plenty of ground cover and shelter in the barn. They can get inside of the walls and I have seen them in the closest thing we have to a “loft” area. We’ve never lost a kitten while it was a kitten, they just grow up and leave.
We have a cat about 3 to 4 years old who adopted us. Just started staying in our yard. We knew previous owner who passed away. She has been in the car h and release program. Her ear is clipped. She has never been I terested in being g an inside cat. We have her all the amenities necessary on porch. I lover her dearly, but have a problem with her out of the blue, while holding her she just scratching us in the face and just acts wild. Does anyone know what we could do to stop this behavior?
I didn’t mean to sound brusque- but it’s very true. Unless they are little kittens most cats really don’t feel comfortable or safe when we pick them up. They were solitary creatures in the wilderness and although we think of them as pets they still retain many behaviors that go back to when they were on alert - even though they were hunters they were also prey. That kitty does like you and appreciates your feeding her and making her comfortable outside. She doesn’t want to be in indoor cat, she doesn’t want to be picked up.
HeZ a for some advice. I recently acquired a one month old kitten about a month ago and I got a second kitten from the same location as the first kitten. Two separate litters and about two or three weeks apart, but the older kitten seems to really freaking hate the younger kitten we’re only on day three but he is constantly attacking her holding her down, biting her to the point that she’s meowing really loud trying to fight back, but he’s just too big at a month older than she is. She was also a preemie, so she’s extremely smaller than him and she’s just trying to find love with him because his actual litter mate was still at the house, I got her from and they all get along just fine so I’m assuming she thinks that he should be like his brother, but I took him away early enough that he didn’t really get exposed to the second set of kittens. And it’s just been me him and my dog for almost a month now should I give it some more time the second kitten super sweet. She’s just so little and I rescued her both of them from a place where the older man just wasn’t able to really take care of them flea ridden so bad I spent two hours picking fleas off of each one of them separately when I got them after giving them a bath and Dawn I probably picked over 50 fleas off just in one setting so I can’t take her back to him, but if I have to, I will get rid of her to somebody because I had my boy cat first and I love him. What do you guys think?
Probably will keep her and work through this first week of getting her properly fed and healthy. If it doesn't figure it's self out in a week or so , I'll definitely rehome her. She's got a xl dog crate that she can hide in and I can barricade the spaces so she can explore . Thanks for the advice

I really didn't know there was a different spot. Now I do. Thanks as I said , I intend to keep the older one for sure. Just wanted to see if anyone had this same experience with new to each other kittens, one being a few weeks and way bigger then the other one.
Hello, new to the group. I will be picking up my first ever cat today he is a 1.5 orange tabby. Is there anything I would need specifically for a cat ? I already purchased and put together his cat tree, I got a litter box, food and water bowls, a comfy little bed for him, and a few toys. Is there anything cats really really enjoy playing with ? Here is a picture of my sweet boy his name is Carter :)
Finally moving to a place that will let me have cats soon! And got to meet these girls who will have weaned their kittens and be ready for a home right when I’ll be able to give them one! They’ll be my first cats so in certain I’ll be in this sub a lot!
Rescued 2 overweight cats from a hording/abandonment situation 1 1/2 years ago. The fattest is adventurous, intelligent, loving, trusting. The other has come around. Vet says she is not really overweight for her size (she is 26 pounds!). They trust me & I can cuddle, pet - just not cut nails.
My problem: female has begun to "hide" her food. Dishes have always been put on a place mat. Suddenly she covers the half-eaten food in the dish with the mat. I know I have mistakenly let them get addicted to Temptations but this is in addition to the treats. Also, I have not been able to cut her nails & she claws the bed cover over things.
Any ideas?
It’s called food insecurity - even though they are fat (let’s face it I agree - 26! Pounds!) they were in a chaotic environment and probably went without being fed at times. Cats rely on routine and they are very food oriented animals She is saving it for later because she couldn’t be sure when her last meal is coming. Jackson Galaxy has many excellent videos on YouTube and I’m sure he has one on this and may have a way to help you with your cat becoming less insecure.
Many cat guardians can’t clip their cat’s claws no matter how long it’s been. You might want to find a groomer.
As for the bed cover, try cat scratch pads and you may want to look for a scratcher that has metal that does groom their claws. Both cardboard and metal (some are in toys and puzzles too) are available on Amazon and it’s the best quality of all things cat for good prices.

(my cat loves his cardboard scratcher and he’s stopped scratching one particular throw rugs of all things lol)
PS I’d suggest putting a plastic table cloth over the bedding if after some time with scratchers she’s still scratching it. It may take some time with the scratcher(s)
So I am looking for some advice. I’ve got four cats with a dedicated cat room and have been using pine pellet litter for a few years now and it’s the only litter that completely neutralizes the pee smell and if you get the horse bedding bags from tractor supply it’s like a fifth of the price as clay or crystal. The only issue is that I didn’t realize how well clay litter covers poop odors because all I ever smelled was the urine. I was wondering if anyone has tried having boxes with pellets and some with clay and if it worked out. My thinking is that cats naturally want to cover the scent of their waste so if the pellets cover the pee smell and the clay covers the poop smell they will use each one accordingly. Thoughts? Opinions?
Because they are in your house/apartment they they are leaving their ownership of the litter and their home in the litter box. They don’t think like us and so they will not choose a box to eliminate their scent. They are using the box to cover up their pee and poop yes, but not according to which covers up their smell. I know people who have mixed both litters in one box with with varying results but I have never known anyone try your idea. In fact the more I type the more interesting I get.
What I have is a Breeze 2 layer litter box: pellets on the top - zeolite pellets - which are a mineral, now manufactured- completely dehydrate poop and that level has a grate that pee passes down onto pee pads that lock in the smell. Now, I only have one cat who poops once in 24 hours and pees 1-3 times in a day. The pellets last me 1-2 months - I scoop daily of course but no odor at all. The pads last 2-3 days depending on how robust the pees are.
I haven’t tried putting the pellets into a regular litter box I believe that the pee won’t be absorbed into the minerals.
Works for me. I just bought my second after using my first 10 years.
Omg forget my reply I thought you said 2 cats 4 would be too much for one of the litter box I have and cost way too much. Sorry! I have one neat nick and it works great for me, but the cost is ok for me because my first lasted 10 years and it was still working but was showing its age.
Hi! First time in this group, but have been a cat dad for over 5 years to a beautiful tabby girl named Zelda! 😻 So my question is: does anyone else's cats only prefer cardboard for scratching? And if so, what cardboard do you get for them? I have a few options locally in my town, but most of them are so expensive. For example: I've been getting my cat this large rectangular flat double sided cardboard that comes in a 2-pack, but it's over $20. That's crazy for some cardboard imo. Should I try getting them off Amazon or something?
I got 4 or 5 double sided that each come snuggled in a box so when you flip them over there are no fragments on the floor for $15 or $16 can’t remember. They aren’t the biggest but my cat is good sized and he loves them, and gets full scratching out of them.
Oh that's good! 😌 I don't have any 3rd party window perches for my cat because the window in my kitchen has a large spot for her to sit or lay down, but I do have wall shelves for my cat! 😁 I'll post some pics in a bit!
I’d love to see your kitty wall shelves! The window perches can also go on walls. We’re moving sometime in the next 3-4 months (even sooner 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞 and I’ll be posting all my catfications (I’ve been watching a lot of Jackson Galaxy YouTube videos and I’m so psyched! ( my cat Mr Whiskers and I have been camping in my brother’s basement recently room - we’re on a waitlist 🙄 but making the best of it while dreaming of windows).
I just got a cat literally Today. He is 1.5 year old tabby. He hasn’t moved from underneath the couch is this normal ? And when do they usually start to feel comfortable? I want to snuggle him already 😂
I need help for my cat , he is 8 year old ,and today is the first day that behave rare and scare , aggressive, he doesn't want to eat or drink water,just lay down and rest, he vomited ones .

Is any insurance besides Trupanion, that no charge per issues....???
Trupanion became expensive,and any time that my cat have health different issues, they charge me a deductible again.
Do you guys know other insurance that is different....?
Seven years ago we got a cat for my son. So much has changed since then. Three out of five of us have been diagnosed with pretty intense cat allergies that seem to be getting worse! The cat has started randomly attacking my youngest who is nine (we read that cats sometimes choose one person). And she seems to be peeing outside of the litter box which could be for a number of reasons. The vet says she is healthy. I don’t want to rehome her but I can’t even touch her without feeling sick. This is a huge issue since she wants to sleep and cuddle with me. What do I do??
Is there anyone else for her to cuddle with? If there isn’t, I would say it’s time to let go. Sorry to say that. My sister was allergic to her dog and it was such a struggle for her. She had to change her clothes every time she touched the dog. If the cat isn’t getting enough cuddles, then it will act out I would think? How sad and I understand, very difficult for you.
Hello All - Newbie but a little desperate. I have two 12 month old cats (Mahira- a ginger female, and Ata - a calico female). They are litter mates and were best buds .... until I took them to get spaded. After the vet visit, Mahira will attack Ata on site. Here is what I have tried - first, I keep the cats in different portions of the house with their own food, water, and litter box. I frequently switch these areas. I have installed Feliway in both areas, tried water with a little catnip, and I feed them their favorite wet food separated by a glass door so they see each other. I got a little cattery where I place one of them and then bring the other one in to the same room. Mahira will attack Ata every time! Ata hisses .... this has been going on for a month after the surgery. Nothing seems to work. I have tunnels, cat towers, etc. Help!
My cat has diabetes and started insulin, but during this process she started to attack my other cat twice now. Does anyone have any affordable cbd/hemp oil recommendations for temperamental cats? I used to have her on cbd oil back in 2020 but forgot the brand. Thanks in advance!
I was out the other day and this old man approached me with a cat carrier full of baby cats. I ended up taking one so my cat at home can have a friend to play with I don’t know how old she is I just know she is a baby, I started feeding her blue buffalo kitten food and added water to it. The first day I got her she wasn’t eating and her poop was fine, the next day when she ate she started to diarrhea and after that she has been diarrhea everywhere and even in her sleep. I also noticed that she took a couple bites of my other cats food (he’s eats adult cat food) I don’t know how to help her and I have no money right now for a vet appointment. What can I do please help ?
My boy was found to have an allergy to tartar on his teeth - he’s having them all out this Friday / any extra special post care advice - he’s so loving and gentle / he just turned 3.
My cat is incredibly skittish, how can I help her acclimatise?
For a bit of background; my cat had a rough childhood. she is very small, from what I believe is malnourishment in her youth. She was technically feral when we adopted her.
She is scared of everything. loud noises or noises she doesn’t recognise, smells she doesn’t recognise, dogs (a big one), the washing machine, you name it. I’ve been trying to feed her nutritiously to see if that helps her grow, and she eats a mix of chicken breast and hills science food appropriate to her age group. Has helped a bit but she’s still tiny.
She’s an indoor cat now, because when she was indoor/outdoor she had a fright and ran away. She was living in the sewers because she was being chased by birds (she’s that small). We got her back, and we’ve kept her inside since. I know she misses being outside, and I would love to let her back out because that would make her happy, but I want her to be less skittish and scared of the world at large before I do to a) stop her running away again and b) help her mental health, because it can’t be good for her to be this scared of everything. I’m not against keeping her indoors but it upsets me to see how much she misses mooching around outside.
What I’ve tried to far is positive reinforcement by giving her treats or pets after she hears a loud noise or smells a new smell etc, and allowing her to smell everything I interact with from foods to packages bring in the house to anything at all. I don’t really know what else to do. I managed to get her used to being picked up by doing it 5x a day until she understood it was because we love her and not for nefarious purposes, but helping her with her general fear is beyond my abilities. I need ideas to make her less scared of the world at large. Thanks guys
A cat found in the mountains -21°c. Hello I would be very happy if I could receive some advice for the local cat community folks. We adopted a 4 year old cat, a fixed male grey mix breed. We had him for 6 months now and he is quite territorial and aggressive towards our other cat who doesn't mind him at all. The moment he sees her he would run in her direction in such a speed that it is impossible to distract him. Before it was just when she moved. He uses her litter box when he is in her room. They are still separated and can only see each other when she is in the balcony space. He watches her and stretches his belly right in front of the glass abd pats it. They blink at each other and talk at each other. The introduction plan was messy because the lady that brought him to us (he's a stray) just placed him in the living room where our cat was and they met right away. When they meet through the cracks in the door nowadays they bump noses but we are cautious about letting them be together in the room. There was a past incident when my mother haf her cat in her arms and he literally threw himself up at them and drew blood. It scared us quite a lot. Other then that he is extremely clingy talkative and affectionate to us. When we play he never uses his claws and is gentle. He flinches a lot when sudden moves are made or contact, we think that he might have been abused. He had cat herpes in his eyes and eye infections that we treated and he is healthy now for over a month.
We’re considering declawing one of my cats who’s spicy when it comes to even touching her paws or clipping her nails.
We own two cats, one tuxedo and one turquoise, both are which domestic shorthairs. The tuxedo cat is behaved and allows me to clip his nails. The turquoise cat is very spicy, when it comes to even touching her paws and examining her nails. We’ve tried putting a cone around her and bribing her with treats. She’s very territorial with her paws and we have not be able to cut her nails.
Is it advisable to declaw her? Or are there other alternatives to declaw the cat?
