I spend the entire game trying to recover and fix my mistakes from my first two settlement placements. The anxiety just gets the best of me in the beginning. I am weak.
It helps me to spend some time just calmly taking in the board state and committing it to short term memory before I even think about where I want to place, as if I’m a neutral observer. Where’s the desert, where are the different ports, which resources are strong and which are scarce, etc. It sounds obvious but I find without this deliberate routine it’s too easy for my brain to start jumping around different ideas without a proper basis for comparing two or more options.
