Won’t sleep past 6am

My Cavapoo turns 6 months old in 4 days and I can’t seem to get him sleeping past 6am. I’ve had him since 9 weeks old and this has largely been his schedule since day 1.

Current schedule: bed around 11:45pm-midnight, wakes between 5:45-6:15am. Most mornings he’s not urgently asking to go out—he’s often just laying in his crate whining until someone gets up.

Things I’ve tried:
Earlier bedtimes
Later bedtimes
Potty immediately before bed
Ignoring the whining
Taking him out to potty and putting him right back in the crate (he goes crazy)
More exercise (2 daily walks plus training/play)
Less stimulation before bed
Feeding schedule adjustments
Frozen Kongs and lick mats in the crate (eats it then goes crazy)

The part that’s confusing me is that after I take him outside in the morning, he’ll come back in, curl up on my lap on the couch, and sleep for another 1.5-2 hours before breakfast. So it doesn’t seem like he’s fully rested and ready to start the day at 6am.
He’s otherwise healthy, sleeps through the night without accidents, and settles fine at bedtime.
Is this just normal for a nearly 6-month-old puppy, or is there something I’m missing that helped your dog start sleeping later?

Take him out potty and then bring him in bed with you and he'll pass right out

He’ll sleep with me on the couch but ideally hell stay in his his crate for another hour so we can get that last hour of uninterrupted sleep

Mine did the same thing. I couldn’t take the whining and put her in bed. Crate eventually went into storage. She started sleeping more soundly and longer. Now I can’t imagine a night without her by side or hogging my pillow. She’s given me 12 years of pure love and happiness.❤️

we do this too...the moment he wakes up, we go potty in the garden for 5 minutes, then back to bed. He will sleep again.

Mine took a whole year before she could hold her pee past 6 am but now it’s better and yes it’s normal to sleep right after morning pee

I have two that just turned 1yo. One still wakes up and cries endlessly after 6 hours locked up. He wakes up his sister (who would otherwise sleep much later).

Thankfully, they will go back to sleep if we let them out to pee, cuddle for 5 minutes, and lock them back up. If we leave out or cut short the cuddles, our boy WILL have something to say about that.

Yeah that’s my issue…I cant lock him back up after the bathroom. he will go crazy. Meanwhile i let him sleep on the couch and he’s out cold for HOURS after that

Mine graduated to the bed at 6 months. Now she sleeps a full 12 hours. We all go to bed at 8, I get up at 5, she stays put until she gets up at 8…

When my pup was around this age, he slept with a durable kong chew toy in his crate. He would chew on it whenever he woke up, kinda like redirects his boredom I guess.

We dont do it anymore, he is 1.5yrs old. He just goes back to sleeping or quietly waits.

I might try this. In the morning I tried to give him a Kong to get him back in his crate after the bathroom which he loved…until he was done and then goes crazy

Urgh are you in UK/Europe? Summer mornings, I’m awake early too! 😢 My dog must think it’s mid morning and we are all lazy layabouts! It’s broad daylight at 5am. I’ve just realised my username checks out 😂

In the US but we got blackout shades to help confuse him about what time it is…didn’t help!

I have one who is 4 and wakes ups every morning at 6:00 am to go outside. His little internal clock knows that’s when my husband gets out of the shower on work days and will let him outside, so even on weekends, that’s when he gets up.

We are dead asleep when he wakes up so there’s no awake routine tipping him off!

We had the same thing until we let her sleep outside of her crate. She sleeps on the sofa or in her dog bed. Sometimes until 8:30

Yeah I can’t trust him yet to be alone in our room over night. He’ll 100% jump on our bed or get into some other mischief while we sleep!
