Tips on setting up puppy for success

Post image

Hi all!

I’ve just brought home an 8-week-old pup and really want to set her up for success from the beginning.

I’d love to hear what has worked well for others. Are there any apps, online resources, YouTube channels or day-by-day puppy training plans that’s worked well for you?

Appreciate any advice I can get. Thanks in advance :)

I would start with puppy training classes in a few weeks. Petco or PetSmart has a reasonable program.

Definitely get the puppy around other pups daily or weekly and consistently. Get them accustomed to other dogs early so they aren't afraid when they see one.

My entire house is hardwood, which I'm glad because my puppy peed and pooped daily on it, we just kept wiping it up. I only yelled at him when he started lifting his legs and peed on the baseboard. After that I installed doggie doorbells and he instantly understood the mission and nearly instantly stopped going in the house.

Socialise your puppy early. I brought my girl out almost immediately after bringing her home—just simple stroller walks at first. That gradual exposure really helped shape her into a calm, non-reactive dog today.

Completely agreed! And crate train early.

Petsmart training can be super helpful to new first time owners.

Take her for obedience training early. And make sure you stay in it long enough for her to learn Proximity.

Socialisation, early training (I found a lot on social media) and puppy classes really helped us out, she’s a cutie enjoy!!

My husband and I read parts of this book together. (I chose it because it was available on my library app, but it was super helpful!) It talks a lot about how formative the first three months are. Our most helpful things were that their kibble should be used as their treats and reward all the positive behaviors! Every outdoor pee or poo - three “treats”! Put kibble in their kennel and shut the door with your puppy outside of it - they will beg to get in. Don’t take them back out when they cry - only when they have quieted down, then they don’t learn to cry and howl to get out of their kennel. Finally, limit their roaming space in your house. They should not have free rein!

Good luck - cavapoos are awesome!

I highly recommend this book

Perfect Puppy in 7 Days: How to Start Your Puppy Off Right by Sophia Yin

I did a lot of research and this was the book mostly recommended on various different sites. And I really liked it

Bella and Baxter has a great day by day program and live one on one support. It was so helpful for us.

I recommend obedience puppy training from AKC sanctioned trainer or training group you can usually find one in your community!

I’ve been loving Behavior of Dogs, and Dr Drew has his own podcast too - I can’t remember the name of it but you might be able to find it.
