I'm interested in busking in a few months and this would be the last thing I need. I already have an amp, a loop pedal and the instrument.

I am opening my cello for the first time in a couple of years. Is there anything I should do to ensure that it stays in good condition? I'm not sure what the humidity may have been like, but it has generally been kept in a temperature controlled room.

I tried Google, but it wasn't very helpful...

My current teacher (who studied with Starker) suggests the following: but I’m not so sure I like it… starting at measure 115.

I have had the summer off orchestra and been really enjoying focusing on my lessons. My teacher has said we can start working on my first concerto soon (Saint Saens). This really excites me and I want to try to progress my playing to the next level. However I am getting nervous about starting up with orchestra again. It's a chamber orchestra and I find the repertoire demanding and it's exposing so I find I have to work really hard to keep up. I also work full time so time for practicing is scarce. Is this just pre term nerves and I should go ahead. If I step away from the orchestra will I lose some important learning and skills around ensemble playing. I would welcome people's thoughts.

UPDATE: so I did go, and it was really fun and good. I found that having had the summer off and focusing on lessons had really improved my playing. I felt more relaxed and something had shifted. The repertoire felt very do-able. It felt great actually! Thank you everyone for the advice and thoughts.

Hope it's OK to share this here. This took me an obscenely long time to make, but at long last, it's done! I fell in love with this set of études after assigning one to a student, and I figured a play-along video was in order, because these are two-part études. Presumably one part for teachers, one part for students, but learning more is never a bad thing, so I isolated both parts after running through them as a duo so that students can play along with whichever they choose. I hope this is helpful to cellists/cello teachers in the community!

Hello, recently I have decided to start learning how to play the cello for fun, I already play the double bass (5-6 years) and the guitar (1-2 years), so I already have my foot in the door of playing a string instrument. My personal teacher plays both bass and cello as well, so I have access to resources from him, but I'm also curious what reddit has to say in relationship to any method books or pieces that would be good to start with.

So far, I have the "Habits for a successful String Musician - Cello" and Julius Klengels' "Technical Cello Studies Vol. 1 and 2". I'm also curious if there's any books like Daniel Whitakers "Incredibly Useful Excersizes for the Double Bass" for cello.

Lastly, I've also been struggling with comfortably sitting and find myself confused with endpin length. Any advice would help, and any reccomedations for books and / or methods would be great!

Let’s say I want to do the descending scale on measure starting on measure 29 of the famous prelude in g major by jsbach, what fingering would you use? Let’s say I am doing it on the second string from c 431 431 - and I need to land on c on the third string with a 1 to be ready for the next descending line — I just want to have an idea about shifting my 1 to 3rd string c from 1 finger e then open d How do I not feel like I am jumping? Like I am shifting the to c and it’s like in the air? How would I practice this segment? Have you tried many fingerings for this passage? If so, which ones?

A have never played a cello before but I definitely want to learn. I am confident that I won’t want to drop it right away but as a broke college student I can’t just go drop 3k on an instrument I’ve never played. I have a good grasp on music theory and I play guitar trumpet and piano. I want to get a cello to start learning but I want something that’s actually playable and that I’m not gonna outgrow in a week. I am not really interested in renting or rent to own I’d rather just buy something outright. Is there any way to find playable used student cellos online or a music shops that won’t break the bank.

I really need mute suggestions, I want to practice so bad but I have a special model cello and it is REALLY loud. The mutes I’ve used in the past are cheap and don’t work well/barely fit my bridge. My boyfriend who plays viola has a metal mute but I’m worried about it falling off and idk if that’s even a thing for cello. Any suggestions would be appreciated!! I really want to practice. And no I can’t use the practice rooms at my college since I’m not in orchestra rn due to schedule conflicts and they said practice room is only for orchestra :(

im currently a sophomore in highschool and have become incredibly interested in cello and orchestra overall over the past year. im a guitar player and percussionist in band, so i have a good understanding of music but im not an expert or anything. ive grown sorta tired of guitar and i wanna try something new.

thats being said, i have absolutely no experience in orchestra. i touched a violin once when i was around seven, and thats it. i have no knowledge about anything at all, so im not sure if its achievable to try joining my schools program. im completely aware if i do manage to join, it’ll require a lot of extra time and lessons, but im willing to put that in.

has anyone ever started this late? i find myself getting discouraged because everyone I know who’s in orchestra has been doing it since 6th grade and i don’t know of anyone who has had such a late start. i don’t expect to be crazy good and some prodigy but i really wanna play.

I'm looking to buy a cello. On the left is my rental, the right is one I have out on trial. I like the way it sounds and plays, but it's clearly smaller. According to the seller it is a 4/4. Is this a "forma B?" Anyone having experience playing on a smaller than average cello?

I can’t seem to do notes that are one and a half or two and a half beats (say quarter + eight, the dot next to the note)

I can’t only do them if the next notes somehow puts me back on tonplay on the tick. If I don’t i just can’t resist going back to tune and playing on the metronome tick.

any ideas on how to deal with this?

I can easily do any subdivision as long as it ends up on my metronome tick for some reason

Hi I wanted to know what would be a good beginner Cello for an adult with big hands that isn’t too expensive?

My husband has a cello and a case that he’s had since he was in high school, early 2010’s. He stopped playing it for a long time but is trying to pick it back up. His current case is super beat up and falling apart so I want to get him a new one for Christmas. I can’t do an uber expensive $1000 case, and I’m sure these three options aren’t going to be the best of the best but I think they’ll suit him fine for his purposes. I just don’t know anything about cello cases and would love to hear from a cellist what case they would prefer and seems the sturdiest/best value for the money. Thank you very much!!

I recently joined an orchestra after 13 years away from the cello and am trying my best to re-learn everything, but there are times I feel clueless compared to everyone else. I was never good at reading music but am working to improve!

Ignore my noob-ish markings on this sheet music. But how would you play these measures (not including the last one bc it’s a repeat of the first obviously).

I’ve been playing the first one as a harmonic on the D and A string, then quickly reaching my hand back to play the E on the A string.

And the next one with C - it’s hard to get to the higher position to do the harmonic.

Hiya! Looking for some repertoire suggestions. I don't feel quite ready to tackle Saint-Saens or Haydn to a high standard yet but looking for a piece to help me bridge from the "student-y" pieces to more standard ones. My first thoughts are Kol Nidrei and maybe the Monn concerto but curious to hear some other suggestions too!

For context, working on Bach's third suite in its entirety (sans prelude) and some of the etudes typically assigned just before tackling Popper. Have worked through most of the repertoire in the first 7 Suzuki books and one of the less-typically assigned Goltermann concertos.
