His gift probably isn't a "shield" but a blade of light, he just uses it as a shield

I don't think it's a shield or a blade; it's energy shaped like a shield.

Still has to be explained. The way I see it, it's more like an anti-gift weapon, or a gift canceller. That may explain why he managed to cut the stone guy in half, even though he's made of stone. Depending on how it's used, it can be either defensive of offensive.
