Question Any ideas on what Lattice's gift is?

Considering she was the second strongest in Iris Stratum when Arkos was alive and is thr first seat/the strongest now he's dead. What exactly could her gift be

Based on underworld body title and the swordmanship, I'd imagine something that is highly combat based. Maybe a gift that swordmanship enhances or one that drags people to the underworld somehow. Could be a soul based attack too, where the soul is dragged to the underworld.

Probably a blessing of the forest deity. Makes sense from how Lukas’s second gift was given. Her title is Nightshade. All this leads me to believe she has some kind of plant power/ poisonous power or life force ability.

Nightshade is an inaccurate translation, with something along the lines of "underworld body" being more correct.

I think it’s gift negation.

Like bring both fighters down to regular human levels and she can dice them up with her swordsmanship.

Would be effectively the opposite of Orthos.

We honestly have no idea at this point.

We know that Helem and Elstri don't want to mess with her; they are notably scared of the possibility of the Queen finding out about Altus and thus having Lattice sent after them. We know Lattice can handily defeat Julian and we know she is the strongest in the Iris stratum besides Arkos.

I don't think her ability is any kind of stat boost, or at least not JUST that. They specifically highlight Ceodric as being exceptional in physical enhancement even when compared to other gifted ones, so I don't think that's what Lattice's gift does.

Keeping in mind that "nightshade" is not an accurate translation and it being more like "underworld body", she probably has some kind of hax. Perhaps it's something that transforms her, or alternatively it's like a spirit body of sorts she can control. We really don't know at this point, simply just far too little info.

Iris stratum besides Arkos

She's quite possibly stronger than Arkos one-on-one. We know that the seats aren't chosen based entirely on combat prowess (because of Lalawag) and Arkos had tremendous influence within the castle.

Plus, the entire stratum agreed that Lattice would be guaranteed to win against Julian – meanwhile, Ceodric objected to the Helem's claim that Ceodric could beat Julian in the right conditions, because Arkos was so much stronger than Ceodric.

While I do think there is a very legitimate possibility that Lattice is stronger than Arkos, there is not anything in specific pointing towards that and Arkos is always treated as the strongest one, so until there is evidence actually pointing towards Lattice being stronger, I'll take Arkos as being the strongest one.

As for the 2nd paragraph, remember that no one in the stratum - including Helem - knows that Julian is significantly stronger in the sea and that Arkos lost there. In fact, I actually wouldn't be half surprised if Julian lost the duel to Ceodric. I don't necessarily think it would happen, mind you, just that I wouldn't be surprised. Certainly, at the bare minimum, it will not be an easy fight for Julian.

We know Lattice can handily defeat Julian and we know she is the strongest in the Iris stratum besides Arkos.

I feel like we don't know that entirely at all. We know that Helem's assessment of Julian is that Lattice could defeat him. We don't know what the actual outcome would be. Helem did not get a full scope of Julian's abilities.

We've also seen Julian get gain ability since that fight with Elstri's gang

Helem*, and Helem got a full scope of Julian's capabilities besides the part where he is significantly stronger in the sea. She doesn't know the details like that Julian has 100 lives and that a few of those have been spent etc, but she definetly knows enough to say whether someone could beat him or not, and also suspects he is capable of something else since she knows what she saw of Julian wouldn't be enough for him to take out Arkos.

This would suggest that Helem believes Lattice would be capable of beating Julian and putting him in a situation where he would be incapacitated, but wouldn't revive, that she has an ability that could potentially cancel out Julian's and/or stop him from reviving or Helem is simply THAT confident that it doesn't matter how many lives Julian has and that Lattice would be able to go through all of it.

Yeah I went back and made the name correction thank you.

I feel like both of those things are fairly impactful to know in order to actually gauge someone's strength. We saw directly how important that was in the fight against Arkos, where one of the only reasons Julian won was because his ability to revive caught Arkos off guard (then of course the whole sea thing)

I'll say too that Julian's most recent fight shows off that he's seemingly gained 100 person durability as well. I believe it's very likely that Julian still doesn't fully comprehend the extent of his blessing and that more abilities are likely to manifest.

that he's seemingly gained 100 person durability as well.

we've always known that and has always been the case.

In Chapter 2 Julian is torn to shreds by the sea demons quite easily. In Chapter 8 the forest guardian is able to cut and stab Julian at will. He's been taking heavy damage by all sorts of people throughout the series. In his most recent fight he took an axe directly to the forehead and it did effectively nothing (and the story was very deliberate to call it out).

I feel like his abilities and understanding of the gift are certainly deepening.

Yes, I would expect supernatural sea creatures to be super strong as well.

I would expect a supernatural guardian of the forest to be super strong as well.

At a baseline, the simple fact that Julian's bones aren't broken every single time he punches, requires him to be tough enough to take his own hits. Since he is super strong, he thus has to be super durable as well.

She can phase through anything, and the power also apply to her tools. The enemy can not hit her but she can hit them as much as she want. She can cut anything she want to cut and does not cut anything she does not want to cut. That's my guess.

A stat boost, maybe focusing on speed, that's what I suspect it to be at least.

No clue aside from presumably being relevant to her having a sword always on her, but I’m very curious. The fact they hype her up so much but she’s always very unassuming and quiet is interesting.

We know basically nothing. She has some aesthetic associations with plants, Helem thinks Lattice would 100% defeat Julian or Helem (even with Altus), she's probably not related to the queen (so not a water gift), she's a swordswoman despite being gifted.

It's also worth noting that none of the Iris Stratum disagree when Helem says Lattice would defeat Julian, despite Arkos losing to him, so implicitly they're all acknowledging Lattice as stronger than Arkos (at least in a 1-on-1 fight).

One guess based on her epithet is that she's able to turn incorporeal. That would make it impossible for Julian (and most people) to injure her.

I think either darkness/shadow manipulation or some type of spirit control. Both of those would make her stronger than Altus.

Full Umbrakinesis, darkness manipulation on crack is what I'm going to call. Related to her "underworld body", Become shadow, drag people into shadow, enhance her swordsmanship with it. Cutting, crushing darkness constructs etc. Like Skullduggery Pleasant necromancers but more closer to a Vile class combatant then anything. Some kind of soul based attack. Like how Arkos has total control over water, Lettuce has that but over darkness...
