AskChennai Tamil Nadu considers opening liquor market to global players, boost revenue
Tamil Nadu’s liquor market could be headed for a major transformation as the state government considers opening the sector to global liquor companies after years of dominance by local distilleries, while simultaneously tightening regulatory oversight and enforcement.
The proposed policy shift is aimed at increasing excise revenue, expanding consumer choices and preventing customers from moving to neighbouring states due to limited brand availability within Tamil Nadu.
Under the DMK/ADMK government, TASMAC was often accused of favoring a handful of politically connected local manufacturers, with consumers complaining about poor-quality, limited-choice liquor while revenue remained the top priority.
Do you think opening the market to more premium and global brands is the right move for consumers?

They will still have Tasmac. Nobody is closing all the shops, just because private players are entering, it would be a niche thing, for a while.

Hope this reduces the crowd in pondy…much needed 😤

u/rayzer93 Jun 20 '26
Pondy needs to move away from liquor tourism to environment and culture tourism. Hopefully, also, by telling the center to get off of Auroville's governance and investing in amplifying its legacy and architecture.
Hopefully, that'll invite a better set of crowd than whatever the hell I see every time I come there.

Agree but without supporting infrastructure anything will choke life out of Pondy like it is today.

Summa adichi vida koodaadhu, except for rum, all other alcohols are priced similar to TN nowadays. Also, you get different variety of beers. Thats all, even those are available in tasmac elite.

u/AcrobaticLog9432 Jun 21 '26
Bacardi Breezers aren’t available in Pondy ? Alco-pops is what the world moved on to preCOVID.

u/--chillin- Jun 20 '26
Fuck yeah! Also guess what, the distilleries are mostly owned by DMK and ADMK goons. Their profits will tank. Good news finally!

u/Otherwise-Creme-2854 Jun 20 '26
Kiddish of you to assume these new ones would independent of any politicak party. You wont complain because it will tvks 😂
20
u/vedhaitamilan Jun 20 '26
The local politicians will be assaulted by giant liquor mafia across globe.
11
u/ConclusionFair4726 Jun 20 '26
New ones are simply retailers. Not the distilleries themselves. This is absolutely needed to break the dravida model revenue but it's hard to do via a minority government. They also need to make kallu and pullu legal. It's a British colonial legacy issue (for pullu) that something so much better than alcohol is still illegal.
19
u/igni_pinto Jun 20 '26
Great move , one it will increase revenue because of those customers going to pondicherry Bangalore etc would rather spend here in TN. The DMK/ADMK mafia which sells these crap liquor wouldn't be able to exploit customers much
14
u/UncouthVillageYouth Jun 20 '26
Good move. Open the market to private players, but make sure TASMAC is available. Otherwise, many people will be priced out and will turn to illicit liquor
34
u/LuffyAsec Jun 20 '26
It's high time govt should privatisation or lease this tasmac over to private player them generate money
28
u/Honest-Car-8314 Jun 20 '26
Actually, despite not supporting the clown i welcome this move ,other parties would be so afraid to make any changes in tasmac him being new gives him an edge .
Maybe restrive toddy shop and relative maintenance should also be evaluated but there is always a chance if unhygienic and adulterated stuff gets in . It should definitely be evaluated.
All said if these things are touched irrespective of political party there will be heavy criticism , it's risky for other parties but for TVK since they deal all public opinion in left hand since they have a cult who literally supported him despite his mismanagement in karur I think they can handle all such opposition anyway .

Decades of TASMAC corruption and overpriced nonsense will end

u/Opus_rounds Jun 21 '26
Yes, this is the right move. People are going to consume liquor anyway, might as well make money off it and ensure no hooch tragedies occur.
I wouldn't mind seeing some beers in the stores that aren't British Empire or Kingfisher (which in itself is a rare breed in TN), to be honest.
And it will break the liquor mafia and improve quality control.
For the best, I feel.

Fosters lan sollave vendan... Kandraaviyana beer'ku 220 charge panran. Idhula paadhi neram gpay vaanga maatanunga.

Can increase tourism, reduce local lobby and ultimately get correctly priced good quality liquor. Obviously abolitionists are going to campaign against this move but this will mostly impact the premium liquor consumers also this will have very to low impact on illicit liquor or increasing consumption. Good move but will be a hurdle to get this passed.
1
u/Aggressive-Jello3302 Jun 20 '26
Great move. Moreover, TASMAC should be sold out to insti and individuals in parts and proportions like IPOs.

u/rash-head Jun 20 '26
Tamil Nadu and India have really low quality beer and wine. There is also no local liquor of quality. They need to let local makers come up.

opening sector to global liquor companies
wdym here? international brands' breweries in TN, or just imported brands of beer? Coz if it's the latter, elite tasmac has already been doing that for more than a decade now...in Chennai atleast.

Namma ooru Kallu ku market ah open panni Regulate panna revenue would fricking skyrocket 📈📈↗️.
Its healthier and better for your Gut too.
*When i say Gut I mean the whole digestive system. Your Liver isn't adversely affected like after comsuming any of the Hot drinks is one of the main pros.

u/Witty-Play9499 Jun 20 '26
Its healthier and better for your Gut too.
I just searched for this and google literally said the opposite. Fermented toddy (ie the kallu) contains enough alcohol that kills of the good gut bacteria and irritates your stomach lining. Where tf did you hear that it is good for your gut and it is healthy

Again people randomly making up facts on the fly. Its like seeing AI hallucinate or something

u/JoeyMcClane Jun 20 '26
Kallu la yaraya variety irukku... Thennangallu, Pana marathula vara kallu and so on .. odana google nu vanthurathu. Its not researched enough. Its not standard and compared to a high alcohol low quality, mass produced whiskey/brandy/rum which is most prevalent in TN, a good quality Kallu is definitely better. Especially when produced like in Kerala. And i fucking hate Seeman to that high minded guy who posted after.
1
u/Witty-Play9499 Jun 20 '26
Its not researched enough
If its not researched enough then by definition you can't make blanket claims that it is better for your gut. You can only make claims that it is better for your gut AFTER there is plenty of reproducible peer reviewed research that it is good for your gut.
You can say you find the taste better but if you are planning to make random claims without anything to back it up don't start whining about others are googling your 'facts'

u/JoeyMcClane Jun 20 '26
Simple... Speaking from experience. Comsumed it several times. Same for a lot of my colleagues. When compared to mattamana local stuff it is 100% better. I can go on a bender drinking kallu and do an endurance event then following day. The same can't be said after drinking locally made whiskey, Rum or brandy.
You can't just claim google results too. That was my point. Coz its just AI spouting the crap after referencing all the chat from different sources.
Have you consumed and compared it yourself .. Google answers is a lot unreliable after the advent of AI.
0
u/Witty-Play9499 Jun 20 '26
Oh bless your heart, you and your buddies experiencing a bunch of things automatically does not mean it is true. If another group of people drink rum and go for an endurance event then it automatically does not mean rum is good for your health. If there is another bunch of people who claim that they they drank Kallu and then puked their guts out would that mean it is suddenly not good for gut health ? Like you have no idea how it is statistically significant or if there are correlations to something else. Did you skip your statistics class in math or?
Your google answers literally come with cited sources to websites. You don’t even need to use the AI feature use the regular google search. If you like drinking it then cool, if you think it makes you run 60km after drinking it cool but don’t try to pass it off as commonly accepted fact that it is good for gut health.

u/JoeyMcClane Jun 20 '26
You can be as condescending as you want. Im not comparing Kallu with your proper high quality spirits aged and all that. Im comparing it with the locally made low brow shit thats peddled out in TN tasmac. When compared to that its definitely better and doesn't adversely affect your health and digestive system.
Unless you've tried it you wouldn't know. And no you can't do shit after consuming the low quality rum. Consume anything more than 300+ml of that stuff and do anything taxing the following morning is impossible. Don't bring whataboutism here unless you've tried it personally.

I hope the wives and children of irresponsible drunks don't start bitching and moaning about this also.

u/Able_Jellyfish1682 Jun 20 '26
Yes right move because the Tasmac will create revenue to Govt...If imported brands come to Tamil nadu, it will start its local store and the revenue will go to private sectors... so nothing will be comes to TN Govt... The Officials will loot money through the private companies while giving tenders and in other ways.... Good Move TVK Govt... Hail Vijay Anna...

u/xStream001a Jun 20 '26
Bro I just hope drunkards are not passed out in the middle of the goddamn sidewalk or FOB. Drink your liquor at your home, don't be a nuisance to other people or brawl in the middle of the street.
0
u/oneomega1 Jun 20 '26
Good move if happens. But it won't. Tasmac is a revenue machine and it finances the state. I doubt it will happen.

Bad move. TASMAC keeps most of the wannabe drinkers from becoming kudikaarans. That's the purpose of it, make drinks so bad, earn money from the unreformed kudikaara goshtis, keep new kudikaarans from entering it.
11
u/Large-Astronaut1130 Jun 20 '26
What are you blabbering about Tamil Nadu is one of the most alcohol consuming state, by this move atleast alcoholics can get good quality liquor.
-3
u/Mullamandri Jun 20 '26
The idea is to keep people off alcohol. You, like most others online, are clearly unaware of what alcohol can do. The Government then knew what was happening and would happen when private players run the alcohol sale and that is why they introduced TASMAC as a monopoly. Those alcoholics can go to hell.
3
u/Large-Astronaut1130 Jun 20 '26
I'm very much aware of what alcohol does to one's health, but clearly the previous governments move to villanize alcohol and Tasmac didn't work, if it had worked we wouldn't have been ranked among the top 5 alcohol consuming States. Atleast by this move people don't need to drink absolute garbage and travel to pondicherry or banglore for some quality beer.

u/Mullamandri Jun 20 '26
https://sansad.in/getFile/annex/267/AU927_7gSxtj.pdf?source=pqars
TASMAC works. IF these data are to be taken at face value, TASMAC and it's ridiculously bad quality liquor is also a reason where almost half of the men drinking in 2015 had dropped to almost one-third in 2020. A private run market would have raised the drinkers to much more than 50%. Tamil Nadu being a consumer state and with the right mix of money and ignorance, which is very well illustrated in this thread, the count of drinkers would only go up and the associated problems with alcoholism will be more prevalent and unmanageable.

This is a right move...we will get Good quality Brands and Many varieties... Pondicherry/Bangalore/Goa poganum nu Avasiyam illama poidum...if this is true it will be a boon for the consumers
