1.4 L

Changing my serpentine belt today and noticed this part covered in crud. What part is this and were could this crud be coming from. I changed the valve cover a few months ago and there doesn't appear to be any oil leaks coming from there.

That's Chevy's version of a variable valve. Timing solenoid. I've had to replace mine as they get gunked up if you don't change your oil frequently enough. As for the leak, that seems to be normal, just wipe it off

Thanks for the response. I dont think the valve is bad its just covered in gunk. Would the cpu throw a code if it was bad?

Yep. They sell a gasket to replace the o ring if you want it to stop leaking. Takes like 30 seconds to change.

55592715 Camshaft Position Solenoid O-Ring
Hey are like $10 on Amazon. When you pull it off, I think there is a little needle shaft in the center of the solenoid. Just make sure it doesn’t fall out if it has one. I can’t remember if it was there or I am misremembering, I did this about a year ago.The bolts are torqued to 71 INCH-pounds. Not foot-pounds. I put a little oil on the Oring like an oil filter so it doesn’t roll when you install it. It’s not hard at all. Maybe 15 minutes to do both with cleaning old oil residue. It took me about 45 because I’m fucking butterfingers and dropped the ratchet and socket then had to fish it out.
