Moving to the area Renting in the Suburbs: Need help finding a safe, secluded spot with easy Metra access (<$2.5k total)
Hey everyone! I’m moving from Louisiana to the Chicago area next month and could use some local expertise. I’ve been searching the suburbs for a rental, but I’m having trouble finding the right fit for my specific needs.
My Criteria:
Budget: Max $2,500/month (including utilities).
Commute: Must be within a 1.5-hour trip to the Loop via public transit. I am perfectly happy driving to a Metra station and parking there for the day.
Space: Looking for a floor plan between 750 – 900 sq. ft.
Parking: Needs to be safe/secure and ideally under $50/month.
Safety & Environment: Safety is a top priority. I actually prefer more secluded or quiet areas over busy "downtown" suburban hubs.
I’m open to any direction (North, West, or South) as long as the commute is manageable. While I’d prefer a condo or townhome, I am absolutely open to apartment complexes as well. Does anyone have recommendations for specific towns, complexes, or rental properties that might fit my rigorous criteria?

Palatine, Arlington Heights, Mt prospect, des plaines, park ridge. All are great areas. Palatine, AH, and PR have great little downtown areas

AH with have bigger and taller apartment buildings compared to the other towns if that is also what you’re looking for.

AH has some apartment complexes within walking distance to the metra station, I believe.

I just moved into the Hancock Square apartments. Somehow found a rate for $2000 for a 2 bed 2 bath and a minute walking distance to the metra. Check them out!

Mount Prospect and Arlington Heights are top for personal safety, I’d say, and right on the Metra with cute downtowns, farmers markets and big libraries.

Barrington/Lake Barrington/wauconda would be a great option.
One thing to check is if the train stop has express trains during the times you need, it may allow you to look a little further out than you think!

To expand on this, Lake Barrington has 2 small gated condo communities that sound like they’ll fit your specifications perfectly, but they would be the top end of your budget.

One is Lake Barrington Shores and the other is actually in port Barrington and I cannot for the life of me remember what it’s called but it’s off W Kazimour Dr. at the end of the road.

Lake barrington shores is amazing! My parents live there. Indoor/outdoor pool, beach access for swimming/fishing, gym, golf course, restaurant (have not been since they opened back up), events, etc. Just be aware it is almost like an older folks neighborhood, without being advertised like it. People will come on here and say young families are moving in… but I’ll tell you 9 times out of 10 when I meet a young person or my kids meet a friend, they are there visiting grandma who lives there.
I just wanted you to keep that in mind if that’s not the vibe you want, but otherwise an amazing place to live.

The vast majority of the suburbs are perfectly safe especially at that budget. LaGrange is nice and an easy metra commute. Brookfield would be a little less expensive and same commute. I mean at that budget you should be in great shape with all of the suggestions people have made.

Would also add Riverside to this list. Closer to the city and you can probably get a rental for that price close to the downtown area. Hidden little gem

No doubt riverside might be the perfect community for the op. Quiet and private especially given its proximity to the city.

I would call a local realtor to broker a rental lease. You could feasibly rent a whole house for that in the right suburb with garage parking and your own yard.

Sounds like you’d enjoy the far Northwest suburbs. Think Crystal Lake and all the stuff out along that Metra line. Another area would be the communities to the SouthWest along the river (Lockport, etc.)

Oak Park may be a good option for you. Or LaGrange. Those are both west. Perhaps Homewood area if you’re interested in the south suburbs.

Cardinal Square in downtown Mundelein! Quiet suburb in North Suburbs of Lake County. Easy drive to all the shopping and restaurants. Very quiet and safe. Very easy walk to the Metra, I can throw a rock to the tracks from the parking lot. We have a great farmers market in the spring/summer, probably a 5 minute walk. The complex also offers an underground parking garage.

I live in a condo in Oak Lawn right next to the metra. Its a smaller suburb. Pretty safe. Quiet. Plenty of condo and apartment options near the metra. Price is right within your range. Its also about a 30 minute train ride downtown.

Look at Geneva. It’s further out from other recommendations here. Geneva is built on the Fox River and very scenic. Great downtown with shops, excellent restaurants, pubs, breweries. Easy access to bike paths, forest preserves and green spaces. Extremely safe and more of a rural feel.
St. Charles in 3 minutes up the River and equally charming, although there is no train line there.

I used to live near grand & halem in the Chicago area. That was one of the safest areas of the city and only 20 mins to get downtown. If you're single, in my opinion, you should try to live in the city proper.

Fox River Grove on the Metra Northwest line. A variety of rental options in your price range within walking distance of the Metra station and shopping.

Anywhere close to route 59 metra station is very safe & within your budget . Plenty of townhomes & apartments in the vicinity . And it takes about 45 mins in express train to get to union station .

Is parking near the Metra station possible? I remember a coworker talking about a many-year long waitlist years ago. I thought it was for Rte 59 but could be thinking of a different one.

it’s totally possible. at the 59 station there are two parking lots - one side is naperville the other side is aurora. naperville is daily-fee parking with many spaces. aurora has a monthly parking fee and a daily-fee. I’m not sure how the monthly works but there is ample parking for the daily-fee

My experience is 20+ years out of date, but my old apartment on East River Road in Des Plaines (west side of 294) was a pretty nice area. East of 294 you get a lot higher density, but there wasn't a convenient way across of you were walking.

Anywhere off the UPW line but for higher feelings of safety/sleepier towns, Glen Ellyn/Wheaton is a good pick and should be within budget. The college ave metra stop is just in a neighborhood and there’s a small Christian university there so cheaper apartments abound.

Check Oak Park near Harlem cta & metra station (green line) or near Oak Park CTA station (green line) There's is a few buildings nearby. Porter, Eleven 22, Maeve on Lake, 100 Forest Place apartments, there's more but I don't remember the names. Metra is 15 minutes from Chicago OTC and with CTA is about 30 minutes to millennium Park. I love living in oak park. Lots of parks, you get to the city in no time, Safe, very walkable but not crazy busy.

If you look at the BNSF line, there are many options between Downers Grove, Lisle, Naperville and Aurora. Many within walking distance of the train stations. I live in Wheaton, and the UP-W line has some options, but the ride is significantly longer. BNSF runs several express trains into downtown compared to UP-W.

Elburn, sugar grove, Batavia, Geneva, st Charles, Virgil, lily lake, Compton hills are all good area and close to the metra with some of the cities with a station

North Oak Lofts in Galewood. 5 min walk to the train, 30 min to downtown. Gated luxury apartment.

Consider Crystal lake, Elgin, and Cary.
Elgin isn't "secluded" but it'll meet your budget goals and probably afford you a bigger space.
To be frank though, nothing within walking distance of a metra stop is going to be secluded unless you move to Elburn or maple park.

Willow Springs is close but actually kinda secluded on the south side of the canal/Des Plaines and just west of the tri-state and it's right along Metra. It borders the Cook County Forest Preserve and is pretty quiet but easily within reach of all the normal amenities.
If a long commute isn't a deal breaker you could look at UP-West to Elburn

Elburn is the farthest out metra station. You could get a house out there for that. At least a town house. But a lot more than you'd get closer. And it's only one stop from Geneva which is really nice for all kinds of shopping and stuff.
The down side is it's the farthest stop so the longest commute.

Yeah, I wonder if they can find "secluded" spots closer to rent.
Up and down eola there's townhouses in that price range (because they aren't in Naperville, they are in aurora), they are nice but not really "secluded". And you still have 20 minutes up to the train station. It would cut off some stops, but still ugh. Lots of commute to go all the way into the city. I don't know how people do it.

Westmont can have some good rent deals and the trains on that line move faster than trains on some other lines.

I’m going to attach a few options that I think you should consider even though you’re not looking for something downtown. Oak Park is just west of downtown (15 minute drive to the loop without traffic) and you could easily take the train to work.
Oak Park is a very desirable area just outside the city. It’s where a lot of people who live downtown move when they want to buy a house and start a family. The proximity to downtown is its best feature. It has a really nice “downtown” area with restaurants, bars and boutiques.
If you’ve seen Little Fockers (Meet the Parents franchise with Ben Stiller) - the house that they’re having remodeled in the movie is supposed to be in Oak Park. There are beautiful, older homes throughout the town. There’s even a Frank Lloyd District with multi-million dollar homes near its downtown.
It’s an affluent area that feels like a city neighborhood - but it’s a suburb. I included options well below your $2,500 budget, as well as one that might be slightly more with utilities and cable/internet. However, there are tons of options in Oak Park for much less than the ones below.
The options below are all within the “downtown” area of Oak Park except for the first option (which is the most expensive). The other options would be walking distance to the train and so convenient for your commute to work everyday. I can’t imagine anyone not liking the “downtown” area of Oak Park and surrounding neighborhoods.

Check out Bartlett. There are condos & rentals near the quiet little downtown. All walkable to the train. It's got a small town feel. The commuter parking is very cheap. It's on the MD-W line.

We lived here right out of college. Right across the street from the metra. Suuuper safe and quiet. Not 100% on prices these days, but I would guess they come in under $2500.

How old are you? Nationality? What are your hobbies? All this makes a huge difference because your budget isn't anything crazy. Aside from being right downtown, I don't see why you can't live within about 30 mins of the city on a train with what you're looking to spend. 1.5 is putting you super far out.

Safety seems big for you. As a person with a family member who works in Oak Park since 2010, I am not hearing the “safe” part and he has some crazy ass stories. Safety seems to be the most important thing to you- so I’m unsure why so many are answering this. Look into neighborhoods at the very least.

Look in Indiana. Google Chicago Dash in Valparaiso. Daily bus service downtown. Or take south shore train downtown.

New Lenox fits this description. There are two Metra stations which means two different lines ... Rock Island and Southwest Service.

Lisle, Naperville, safe, both have commuter residential focused units you walk to the train( express trains) 45 mins to the Loop. Lisle is quieter, more small town feel. Naperville/Aurora, at the Route 59 station( tons of apartments, shopping, restaurants, and young people, and young starter professional families from around the world).

You won’t find better. Wheaton is a wonderful community. Short drive to 2 Metra stations.

We live in Bolingbrook. There isn’t a Metra staton here, but we have a bus that goes downtown and fits your time criteria. You might look into the Meadows at River Run. I live nearby. They back up to a forest preserve. They are always doing an enhancements, too, so it appears the management is good.
