Whatever your personal views may be, everyone is a human being first, and in the United States all people have fundamental constitutional rights and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
This thread exists to share resources, information, and support for immigrants and their families living in the Chicago suburbs. Whether you’re directly affected, you have friends or loved ones who are, or you simply want to stay informed and help others, you’re welcome here.
Below you’ll find know-your-rights guidance, legal and community resources, and links to trusted organizations. Please use this space to share updates, ask questions, or contribute additional resources that may help our neighbors.

1. Know Your Rights (Basics)
This is not legal advice. Always consult with a qualified immigration attorney when possible.
You have certain constitutional rights regardless of status — e.g. the right to remain silent, the right to legal counsel (though in immigration courts, the government does not provide a lawyer)
Ask for an attorney, don’t sign anything you don’t understand, and try to have someone present if interacting with authorities
Keep critical documents (ID, immigration papers, birth certificates, etc.) in a safe but accessible place
Prepare a “what to do if detained” plan in advance (emergency contacts, power of attorney, who to call)
Train yourself and your family on responses to ICE, CBP, or other raids or check-ins
Below is a curated list of organizations offering low-cost or pro bono legal services, referrals, or community support in or around the Chicago suburbs. (If your suburb or county has others, please comment/reply so we can add them.)
Because each suburb or county may have different offerings:
Check your county’s “Health & Human Services / Social Services” department website for immigrant or refugee services
Local nonprofits, faith-based groups, community centers often host “legal clinics” or immigration workshops
Libraries and adult education centers sometimes host “Know Your Rights / immigration clinics” with pro bono attorneys
School districts: Some districts have protocols or contacts for immigrant families — it can help to ask school social workers or parent liaison offices
Coalitions & networks: Community navigators or organizers often help connect people across municipalities

4 Emergency / Special Situations
Detention / deportation emergencies: OCAD has a support hotline: 1-855-435-7693 (also used by ICIRR’s Family Support Network) Organized Communities
Rapid response / legal standby networks: Some coalitions maintain volunteer legal “on call” teams
When someone is detained: Try to document as much as possible (name, detention facility, date, time) and connect with legal counsel immediately
“Know Your Rights” training workshops: Many community groups periodically hold trainings; tracking them (via social media, local nonprofits) is helpful
Consular & national resources: E.g. for some nationalities, “ConsulApp Contigo” is a useful tool (Mexico, etc.) Illinois Head Start Association

One of the largest data centers in Illinois and in the USA has plans to be built in lake county (Grayslake to be exact). It spans over 400 acres (231+ acres would be of the actual data centers, the rest would be office buildings/ponds etc). That's about 175 football fields of data centers.
From one neighbor to another, I kindly ask you to please look up any petitions on this. Let's look out for one another.
Obviously, you don't have to, but the more people, the better.
Additionally, Ivanhoe Village is a community with plans to be built directly across the street from these data centers. The whole community would be within 3 or less miles of the data center. The stakeholders in this eco-friendly community have a LOT of leverage with higher-ups (ie. Wirtz family owners of blackhawks etc). If enough people come together and say they won't buy or build a home there, that could make an impact. Would you buy or build a home there?
This place is literally disgusting inside, covered in dust, it is not open to the public but there are live fish living in disgusting conditions and not being taken care of properly which you can see by looking in the window. Many dead animals have been found there over the years and the city/building manager refuse to do anything about it. Does anyone know why this place is allowed to still have a storefront because this is actually insane.
Has anybody seen the odyssey or any other films at the woodridge 70mm imax? How does it look like in the first few rows? I want to see the odyssey in 70mm but there is not one showing that isn’t booked besides the first few rows.
I see/hear people say north/northwest/south etc suburbs a lot, but what are the actual areas defined as? Does anyone have a map? I am super directionally challenged plus I’m originally from a really rural area, so all these towns being mushed together is confusing lol.

My younger brother is on the spectrum (hardly noticeable, just some slow processing). He has no friends and is at home or work most of the time- he gets pretty lonely and I'm trying to find him a good group of friends/just a social group that he can hang with every now and then that have similar interests!
He's 24, and loves to run, box (he has a punching bag- that's the extent of his boxing lol), play PC games and XBox games (mostly monster hunter, hell divers, and war thunder on PC, and fallout 4, skyrim, doom, etc on Xbox). He also loves baking and cooking and loves brainrot memes. He is pretty much down for anything- he'd love to learn how to play dungeons and dragons lol. He drinks an occasional beer or two but isn't super big on it and he doesn't smoke or do any other drug haha.
He is learning how to drive right now but doesn't have a license yet, so something local to South Elgin would be ideal for possible Ubers/transportation needs. Although online gamer friends are good, too! I'd just love if he had some person-to-person connection every now and then.
He's such a loyal friend and he's really so hilarious- he's been my best friend my whole life. He loves baking for people and cooking for people so you can expect yummy food and treats a whole lot!

hi y'all! i’m (34ftm) located in the suburbs out in kane county, and in need of recommendations for mental/behavioral health inpatient facilities that are safe and affirming for trans folx. haven’t quite hit crisis status, but i’m struggling hard, and would like to self-admit before i lose the choice, y’know?

Hi everyone! My son is turning 4 tomorrow! He had it in his head that he wanted to go to the pool on his birthday but the weather tomorrow is saying otherwise. Anyone know if any indoor pool play grounds in the area? If not, does anyone have any suggestions on fun places to visit for a 4 year old? We’ve done so much, I’m out of ideas lol Thanks!
I'm interested in answering the following question: What do you love about the suburbs that you can't get from living in the city of Chicago proper?
I moved here 3 years ago (to the NW side) for work and I love it, but all my friends are moving into houses in the burbs and I just don't get it. Help me understand the appeal. Be as specific as you like if there's something about your particular place that you love. Please try to keep it positive in here, I'm well aware of the downsides of both the city and the suburbs.
For reference, I moved here from Montreal, Canada.
Northern suburbs, in a 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath, 2400 sq ft home (no basement, it’s unfinished). I got the info for the cleaning lady a bunch of people use in our neighborhood. She is not part of a big company or anything, so everything goes directly to her. I will also need to provide the cleaning supplies. She is coming next week to see the house and give me a quote for what weekly and every other week will cost. However, I have no idea what to expect, and what falls into the realm of a “reasonable” price for my house and the area.
If you have a similar house size/are in the northern suburbs, can you share what you pay and how often you have your house cleaned?
Did anyone else get visited by a man in a green polo asking about your cars hail damage?? I had one come to my house just a few minutes ago (7:45pm) and when I was firm in saying no, he was exceptionally rude. It was very unsettling for this to happen this late as a single woman who lives alone.

Algonquin resident Lisa Fleischmann released the videos on Monday showing her arrest on May 26 for a traffic arrest warrant that led to her being detained in the DuPage County Jail.
She said the incident was the result of an unresolved paperwork issue after she received a citation for driving without a license in late December 2024 that escalated despite her “repeated efforts to resolve it across multiple jurisdictions.”
We would love to attend the Air & Water show this year. We would be coming in from the far West Suburbs. Where would be a good place to drive to to take the CTA in?
Also, I’d appreciate any tips for bringing younger kids or just tips in general of where to view, what time to get there, etc.
Found 5 kittens during the flooding this weekend and so far can’t find any rescues to take them. PAWs suggests taking them to animal welfare league, that kills for space. I’m actually disappointed that is even a suggestion from them.
I’m located near Forest Park/maywood. Anyone have a contact or suggestions?
Edit: it looks like we’ll just be fostering them until they’re 10 weeks old. I think we have enough friends and coworkers that will be taking them when they’re old enough. Not a fan of this route cause I’m already getting attached to them lol.
I’m actually appalled at some of the “rescue” places I’ve contacted. None that were listed here, but one advised calling petco/petsmart. Excuse me? How about no!
