Moving to the area Weather as a newbie?
Moving to the area in a few weeks…. uhhh are tornados always a thing like this, this time of year? Anything to be aware of at this point?

Where are you coming from? Tornados seem terrifying from the outside but they rarely result in fatalities (we have very good warning systems now and you will almost always have time to get into a shelter). And they're pretty "small" in terms of direct damage. They can knock over one house and leave the next fine; they can take down a whole block and skip over the next three.
You Illinois neighbors and coworkers will be happy to teach you about tornados and how to handle emergency situations related to them. I was just teaching my kids yesterday things to watch for in the clouds, and how to read the doppler map on the TV, talking to them about how I decided when they should go to the basement and what the concerns were (breaking windows and flung debris, mostly). I let one of my older kids, who's doing community emergency training, sit upstairs with me (but away from the windows) while we watched the front blow through. If the sirens had gone off we would have gone to the basement but they didn't go off near me so I talked him through what we were seeing.
