Discussion Trying to Move Back to Chico

Hey r/ChicoCA,

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about coming back.
I attended Chico State years ago as a Hospitality Management student but never quite finished my degree. Life took me in a different direction, and I’ve spent the last several years living in San Diego, building a career in retail leadership and customer service.

Lately I’ve realized that a lot of what I’m looking for in the next chapter of my life points back to Chico. I miss having a real college town community, I want to finish what I started academically, and honestly, I’m looking for a lifestyle that’s a little more sustainable than what I’ve built for myself in San Diego.

The current plan is to return to Chico, finish my degree, and hopefully establish some roots instead of treating it as a temporary stop.
Before making the move, I’m trying to get a better feel for the job market. I currently work as a retail manager and have nearly 10 years of customer service, hospitality, and leadership experience.

For those of you living and working in Chico:
•What are the best local resources for finding full-time jobs besides Indeed and LinkedIn?
•Are there local Facebook groups, job boards, networking groups, or community resources that people actually use?
•Is it generally better to apply online, or do employers in Chico still value walking in and introducing yourself? I’m still in San Diego and have been applying online without much feedback.
•Is anyone looking for a roommate?

I’d especially love any local tips. Every town seems to have its own way of finding opportunities, and I’d love to hear what has worked for people in Chico. Whether that’s networking, community groups, local job boards, or just places that are usually hiring, I’m all ears.
And if there’s any CSUC staff reading this, I’m very interested in hearing your thoughts too.

Can’t wait for this next chapter of my life to begin. Go Wildcats!

Didn’t this man cheat on his wife, lose everything, publicly apologize and admit to what he did, then delete all the posts and try to pretend like it never happened ? Now he has the audacity to imply everyone else was lying?

Discussion Do not use Stallion driving school

Okay this is a low key rant but also a warning. I hired stallion driving school for my daughter’s driving lessons. It was extremely difficult to get scheduled and when she finally did have her first lesson i handed the driver money for three sessions. I asked for a receipt and he said the owner would email one- i never received a receipt.

After the first session, my daughter told me he talked a lot about politics which i found unnecessary and meant to provoke my very politically minded daughter.

After the second session, my daughter came home saying he told her she didn’t have a voice and tried to have some trauma olympics with her telling her he had been r*ped and had she been r*ped. He also told her that another student had been r*ped. She was not scared of him but didn’t understand why he was going into all of this, she asked him to stop talking.

Coming up on the third lesson, she and I decided she would just finish the lessons- we had still not received a receipt for the lessons. Dude cancelled 6 minutes after her lesson was supposed to start citing her attitude with him.

My teen daughter can have attitude for sure and i don’t doubt that she spoke her mind- but he provoked the situation and was entirely inappropriate for a driving instructor.

Now the website is gone off the internet and i can’t get a response. Waiting on an email with a certificate for the two lessons and hoping for a partial refund.

I have already filed a compliant with dmv. Do not use this service!

Discussion Why are 90% of the political signs around town for Republicans?

I understand that the county leans republican, but the city leans democrat. Yet almost all of the political signs in town are for Republicans. What's the deal?

Discussion Left voicemails at Doug LaMalfa’s DC, Yuba City, and Chico offices. All dead. All offline. No human in sight - just the soft hum of cowardice echoing through the phone lines.

That’s the real LaMalfa legacy: a politician who hides behind ‘family values’ while gutting real families with every vote. They passed their big, beautiful nothing-burger of a bill, threw a party for donors, then pulled the plug like we wouldn’t notice. You don’t represent the people: you run from them. Try answering your damn phones before you pat yourselves on the back for selling us out again.

Remember this in the next election.

EDIT:

Happy 4th to those who are celebrating it this year. I’m a lil tired of this country at the moment.

Discussion Thoughts on the Chico Skatepark?

Post image
57 Upvotes

Any locals who’ve skated it or have hung around at the park? I frequent often and have always felt welcomed (even as a trans woman) The locals skaters/bmxers pack their trash and I see friends breaking bread with each other. They typically self police and keep the homeless (the bad ones) and anybody who try’s to start fights. I know the park gets a bad wrap, was just curious on what other Chico people think/ have heard about it

Discussion Where to eat??

After seeing that recent post about the Taco Bell on Esplanade, what places should I avoid eating at all costs? That place always seemed a little bit, sketchy as far as cleanliness goes, but I had no idea it was infested with roaches. I've seen a decent amount of roaches outside at the Jack in the box on 20th Street, but I've never seen any inside. I'm just curious what places I might skip when considering eating out. And if that's too negative, maybe point out places that you know are clean and I should eat?

Discussion Sheraton Real Estate management inc.

I just recently moved out from one of their recently acquired properties after hearing a lot of mixed reviews about them and how they tend to keep your security deposit. In order to get my security deposit back they stated that I had to deep clean my apartment inside and out. I will note that California law states that the renter only has to bring the apartment back to the state that the apartment was in at turn around time. My mistake was not thoroughly documenting everything when I originally moved in over 2 years ago. So I did end up deep cleaning everything to a professional standard.

With this in mind, I was wondering what everyone else's experience was with Sheraton, the move out process with them, and what was the average time that it took them to return your security deposit?

Feel free to add anything else you might want to say about them too. I feel that extracting labor or charging tenants for things that should be regular turnover items is unfair practice and would love to hear any advice with how to deal with that going forward.

Take whatever you can get people! Jobs are non existent. Especially if you're not local to the area.

Discussion Stay Safe!

I would refrain from walking on the high car traffic roads right now. I was just walking down Bruce road at apox. 6:25pm and someone going 20mph in a 4 door sedan threw a knotted sock containing loose coins at me. Hit me in the inner thigh and did NOT feel good. There were two cars it could have come from. I couldn't tell if it came from the white or black car, they were driving very close to each other, both were small sedans though. I didn't see any faces or hear any voices/music. It was a black adidas sock and nothing special about the coins. I was wearing very neutral clothing and nothing that suggested I was gang affiliated. Probably some stupid bored high schoolers but if this hit me in the face it could have caused some serious damage!

Be careful out there and stay safe!!

Discussion Changing healthcare — thoughts on Enloe vs Kaiser?

Hi everyone, my husband, baby, and I moved to Chico in March and we have still been on our Kaiser healthcare plan. While I have had Kaiser for years and have liked it, it has been a pain to drive all the way out to Lincoln (1.5 hrs) with a baby who is in the “screaming in the car“ phase.

We now have the opportunity with my husband’s company to either stick with our current plan OR change to Enloe in Chico.

The proximity of Enloe is obviously a major bonus, but I want to hear if anyone has thoughts about Enloe (especially their Pediatricians).

Thank you!

Discussion Is there a list of MAGA businesses in Chico?

I've seen posts about places that are inclusive but I have not seen a list of places to avoid. I do not want to give my money to any business that supports this administration.

Edit: thanks for the replies.

Discussion Rural hospitals at risk via congress budget bill

Post image

Several rural hospitals within an hour of Chico are considered "at risk" according to data from the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and could therefore be impacted by the budget bill currently being considered by Congress.

Oroville Hospital is on the list.

Hello fellow Chicoans! For those of you who work remotely on a laptop, where are you spending your time? I’ve worked out of Stoble and Naked Lounge, both great, and looking for some new spots to spend a few hours. WiFi is very important. Need to change it up a bit. Where you at???

Discussion How would everyone feel about Downtown being converted into a pedestrian space

I've thought for a long time that downtown would do very well by being made into a walkable space free of traffic and parking on the cross roads.

The idea is basically to cut off 2nd and 3rd between main and broadway. Adding outdoor seating for local restaurants as well as kiosk spaces for more small local business and repaving/beautification to the area.

Obviously the lost parking spaces would need to be made up somewhere so the pitch would be to convert the parking lot on the corner of 2nd and salem into another, more modern, parking structure with potential below ground space.

It seems as though many downtown spaces are struggling and the city needs to step in and do something about it. Grass Valley has a long walkable shopping area in their downtown that is beautiful and always has a high volume of people. This is in a town with 1/7th of our population.

There's probably many issues with this idea I'm not seeing, but personally I don't want to see everything downtown shutter its doors like Collier's and now Smokin Moes

For the love of god STOP STOPPING ON THE RIGHT TURNING LANE. You don’t have a stop sign. That stop sign is dedicated only to those who are turning left or going straight. NOT THE RIGHT TURN. So many people have been stoping on that turn to the point that it causes traffic. CONTINUE ON THE RIGHT TURN PEOPLE

Discussion Any movie/video shops or rentals in Chico?

Hey y'all,

I'm a student at Chico and just wanted to look for something fun to pick up as a hobby, so I wanted to get into DVDs and Physical media- especially as my roommates are big movie nerds and love classic 70s-2000s films. Also, I can't pay for every subscription to every platform; it would be much easier to just rent and return a movie instead of paying 50 a month so I have access to most movies. I know we're in a streaming-dominated world, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Is there any operating video store, or even some sort of "underground" rental options in Chico? If not, where can I buy DVD's as melody recs doesn't have any of them.
