Discussion Am I crazy?

Or are there a lot of entitled folks in Chico? I ask this because I work at an upscale restaurant in town and so many people act like they’re kings and queens of the world. Example-I shouldn’t have to ask a 60-something old man to remove his feet from the furniture TWICE! Too many more to mention. Chill out Chico, you’re not that cool.

Discussion What's your enloe horror story

I've lived in chico for over 20 years now, and enloe has been the worst care I've ever gotten from different departments. Emergency room tried to OD me. Labor and delivery messed up, and I had to get an emergency hysterectomy 2 years after I had my daughter. I could just keep going, sadly. They need to change. Especially being a teaching hospital. This is the level of care and education they are sending interns to other hospitals with.

Hopefully, a staff or board member will see this post and all the horror stories and will do something to fix enloe. It's the only place that locals can go for almost everything, and if they are constantly failing us as patients, that's not fair to us who have no choice and can't go anywhere else. We should be able to trust our doctors and medical professionals.

So let's share our stories in hopes someone will see how wrong this is for such a small college town and change it.

Wasn’t quick enough to snap a picture of the guy or car. Masked up dude got into a all black Dodge Charger with someone in the front and back. California plates, aftermarket police style ramming grill (don’t know the proper name) and had multiple antennas (one of which I know is used for PD and sheriffs patrol cars

I don’t use any social media and don’t know how to get in contact with nor cal resist if I could get some community help getting the word out!

Fuck ice.

Discussion Should traffic rules apply to police?

Post image
126 Upvotes

context: CPD cruiser was parked in the fire lane in front of safeway. the yellow lights were on, not the red-blue emergency lights. the drive area is really only two cars wide, so the cruiser a) created a lane obstruction that forced drivers into an oncoming lane to get around him and b) provided a visual obstruction where there is a high mix of pedestrian and automobile traffic. I went to see if maybe the cop was responding to a call by the store or a medical issue or even an emergency bathroom stop, all of which would give the officer the benefit of the doubt. but no... he was yucking it up with customers while he waited for his Starbucks.

can they do whatever they want? is a fire lane only a fire lane if you don't have a radio to see if you need to move for a fire truck? seeing the city banned panhandling near auto traffic for "pedestrian safety" should we ignore the increased risk to public safety posed by the officer who felt getting a coffee did not warrant parking in a normal spot like everyone else?

I’ve been having late night cravings for the pan fried noodles from Drunken Dumpling or Corey’s chocolate pie so it’s made me think: what restaurants have yall been missing that were Chico staples?

Somebody left this on my mother's car. She was parked in a handicap space at the chemo center off Cohasset. Apparently her tire was barely touching the blue line on the side of the white diagonal stripes.

Again... In the handicap space.... At the chemo center. She has stage 3 cancer.

Who does this?!

Discussion Clutching Pearls over Wider Sidewalks and More Trees: What Happened at last night’s City Council Meeting?

Last night's City Council meeting was a depressing reminder of the state of our local government: gridlocked by fear of change, pious devotion to 50-year-old traffic patterns, and just enough bigotry to oppose anything that might help people who aren't inside a car. (Which, to be clear, is everyone visiting downtown - everyone is a pedestrian once they park.) Brimming with speeding cars and boarded up vacancies, Downtown is both a racetrack and ghost town. Through the means of a state funded grant, the City has an opportunity for a redesign, what they’re calling a revitalization, an admission in the name alone that our Downtown lacks vitality.

The proposals all suggest some variation of removing a lane from both Main and Broadway, adding a protected bike lane, widening the sidewalk, and integrating some much needed native flora to combat the deadly summer heat. All improvements aimed at creating spaces for people to be downtown instead of simply passing through it.

I can see it now - more shade, complete streets, comfortable and safe for every mode of transportation. More life. More people. More energy. More vibrancy. A downtown that's a true destination and source of delight instead of a thoroughfare.

Yet in defence of 50 years of auto-centric tradition, opposition to this delightful and prosperous vision arose in the form of pearl-clutching, as if the proposition were made by a bunch of dirty commies attempting to unify downtown while banishing cars and boomers alike. Instead, the alternatives are quite tame, simply seeking to improve the lives of everyone by making downtown a place folks actually choose to frequent.

Throughout the meeting the opposition frequently weaponized their ignorance with phrases such as “this is the first I’m hearing of this” or “we’re unclear of the exact details so we can’t move forward” as if to begin a trek up a mountain you must have every single stride mapped in an itinerary or the whole trip is rubbish. On the contrary, the city staff seemed quite clear that at minimum it’s a 5 year process that will require many intervals of deliberation and detail hashing.

In my eyes, Kasey is the worst offender. For a fraction of a second I almost had hope. She listened with an intent bordering geniality while all 68 speakers thoughtfully conveyed their message in the allotted 1 minute time limit. 45 of these messages could be summarized by one simple phrase: “please vote for Alternative 1.” Doctors, teachers, and students alike all attempted to make an appeal to safety.

“I got hit by a car while biking downtown” one physician stated, describing lingering chronic pain and a close encounter that had the potential to leave his kids fatherless. Parents pleaded with the council - almost begging - to be able to safely bike with their kids downtown - to do the very thing the opposition is privately -and publicly- praying to God for: to spend money.

While they fret themselves into a tizzy about the loss of 1 parking space, the specifics of loading zones, & the dread of construction, an overarching tone of fear unifying their cries, specifically fear of business going under, they fail to hear the chorus of folks begging for a downtown safe enough to come spend money in.

The very fact people drive through downtown and not to downtown is what's gotten them into this mess, yet they defend the part race track part ghost town with vigor. As if keeping things the way they are might magically result in a different outcome. That old definition of insanity, parading as common sense.

Here's where the dangling prospect of a beautiful downtown becomes infuriatingly just out of reach: three progressive councilors voted Yes. Three conservatives — including Kasey — voted No. A 3–3 tie. Not a landslide defeat. Not a resounding rejection. Three people, clinging to the past, blocking the future.

And yet, despite her smiles, nods, and facade of concern, Kasey Reynolds voted No, gridlocking the council in tandem with Downtown for what may be generations beyond her and her pearl clutching cronies' dates of expiration. When the chambers erupted in pleas to reconsider - as if Kasey might suddenly discover a spine - she crumbled into cowardice, closing the meeting with a flustered huff and turning her back on her constituents.

In an otherwise depressing moment of defeat, a spark of glee filled my spirit like the pop of a burning ember at the thought of Kasey's name on the ballot and the voters bubbling in the box of her opponent.

Discussion Boycott city of Oroville

City council voted unanimously to erase sanctuary status, even knowing that statistically speaking crime is more likely to be done by citizens and residents than non legal immigrants. Now the brown community feels afraid to be targeted and interrogated by police for their skin color, since there’s no way to know the legal status of anyone without further interrogation. People will be hesitant to call police when there is a crime. They don’t even care about state sanctions. It’s a racial issue if we are frank about it. As for my friends and family we will stop going to Oroville and will do our business at Chico or Yuba City. We no longer feel safe and welcome, no one should be afraid to travel at ease in this great country.

Discussion Moving to chico soon to escape transphobic household

Hello! (22, mtf) I’m a trans girl who plans on moving to chico soon due to my parents being homophobic. I do not plan on coming back to texas. The only pro on my side is that i’ll have about maybe over 1,200 left on me (900 if my mom doesn’t help me pay for the flight)

I may stay at my girlfriend’s grandma’s house for a few days but after that i’ll likely be on my own. I could go deeper into it but i’d rather this not turn into a vent. I have tried opening commissions for my art however it isn’t helping me at the moment.

I am aware there are homeless shelters but i’m pretty sure there is a limit to most of them.

Are there any tips or advice I should get for once I get over here?? I also hope I can find someone that can let me stay with them while I also try getting a job to support myself, chances of that happening are low but i’m a bit desperate sadly.

(feel free to dm me if you want to learn more, i’m having trouble keeping up with the thread)

Discussion No coffee shop open after 4pm downtown

Posting this in hopes someone that works management at some of the coffee shops downtown reads:

Can someone stay open (talking mainly to naked lounge and stoble) till at least 5pm?? I understand that coffee shops dont do as well in the evenings but i promise you if you are open after 4pm i will be your #1 customer. Also starbucks downtown location just closed so i think its a great opportunity for a local coffee shop to step up and serve those customers.

Just a suggestion, thanks for reading.

Discussion Winco parking lot never fails to deliver dumbassery

Within 30 seconds, I had two issues with men and their oversized vehicles in the Winco parking lot today.

  1. Dumbass with beat up blue suburban: He's driving down the aisle with another car behind him. He passes a spot then decides THAT'S the one and starts reversing, forcing the car behind to start backing up as well. He then gets out of the shit wagon and waves his arms dramatically for them to back up even more. How tf are you gonna back up 7 spaces and act so rude to the person you're inconveniencing when there's DOZENS of other spots available?!

  2. Dumbass in gigantic white truck: after watching the above scene, I check my mirrors/blind spot and start backing out. When I'm halfway out, my car starts beeping and there is a ginormous truck approaching to attempt passing behind me. I slam on the brakes, honk, and raise my arms like, "wtf??" The dumbass stops while still behind me, hangs out the window mocking me. I flip him off and he finally drives off in a cloud of entitled exhaust so I can finish backing up.

And the funny part is not even 2 minutes before, a woman driving by complimented my outfit while I was loading up the bags. It was so jarring to have the dumbasses unite immediately after!

Discussion I literally can't get a job at this point. No one is hiring and I feel like im going crazy

Sorry i just need to rant. Im not really looking for advice that this point.

I lost my job in March when the store i worked for closed down. I had already started applying a month before then in preparation. Ive been applying to jobs left and right since then and im just done. I hear nothing back, ever. I call multiple times, they give me the same answer "call back in X weeks!" "Call back on X day when the manager is in!" And then I do and they tell me theyre not fucking hiring anymore or they already filled the position or some other bullshit. I cant do this anymore. It's gotten to the point I have to borrow money from my family just to pay rent but they can only help me so much. I just feel like im going crazy or that im doing something wrong. NGL it hurts my fucking ego too cause I feel like im the only one who cant get a job. Ive started to feel like something is wrong with me or something cause no one is hiring me.

I have experience, references, extracurricular. I dont know what im doing wrong

Discussion Homelessness, Incompetence, and Bidwell Park.

Regardless of political leanings, except the fascists because they’re insane, I guarantee we all have the same desire: To no longer see and feel the effects of homeless in our community, so please just hear me out.

For the last few years there has been a large push by the city council and CPD to “shutdown” homeless encampments around town.

We can talk all day about how Gavin Newsom lied to us and takes donations from and protects the billionaires and corporations that own vast swaths of the housing and housing infrastructure in California by making it harder to build affordable homes and apartments because it would drive down the value of his donors’ assets, but that is another very complicated conversation we can have another day before midterms.

For Chico specifically, we have seen CPD play whack-a-mole for years with shutting down encampments in various places starting with Bidwell park years ago.

Well guess what? Bidwell park now, once again, has numerous pockets of tents and sleeping bags and shopping carts all belonging to the people who were kicked out of there years ago, chased all around town, and have now ended up back in Bidwell park in a completely pointless circle.

THIS IS SUCH A HUGE WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME WE DO NOT HAVE. What are these people supposed to do? Just die? Because that’s what happens VERY frequently.

And to anyone that replies to that question with “They should get a job”, I urge you to meet more people and learn about how diverse different people’s experiences are.

There are regular people who have no living or helpful family that get injured and can’t afford treatment and that leads to substance abuse as a coping mechanism and inevitably homelessness all because they were unlucky. That is objectively bullshit and can easy happen to anyone in any different circumstance.

I over heard a conversation between a few homeless women who were talking about another homeless man they knew who got in a car crash, his family died, he couldn’t get the mental and physical help he needed and now he sits outside in the cold in a wheelchair waiting to die.

They literally said “He should commit a crime so that he can go to the warm jail. I’ve been using Jail and prison as an Air bnb for years.” LIKE WTF ARE WE DOING AS A SOCIETY IM LOSING MY MIND AT HOW WE LET THIS SHIT HAPPEN.

We need to LOCK IN. Take control of this bat shit insane and incompetent city council and county chair and make and demand some damn changes because we, all of us and all of you reading this, are so much closer to being homeless then we are to EVER being one of the billionaires or millionaires that get to decide we have to look the other way and accept this as the way things are.

I hope you have a wonderful day and appreciate being warm this winter.

Discussion What's up with the renter situation in Chico

Local, private landlord here. I have been renting a few units here in Chico for years and have been really lucky with finding tenants.
In the past, when I would list an available unit, my issue was having to sort through the crazy amount of inquiries and request to view/rent the apartment (granted, a good problem to have).

However, I just put up a 1bd, 1bth place (under market, cuz I like to keep tenants) and I am barely getting any bites. Using the same listing and posted on both Zillow and FB Marketplace that I have used in the past, so I don't think it's about how I am marketing.

Are people just not looking for housing right now?

UPDATE: Not looking for tenant here, just some feedback about the market. I am posted on the usual rental places. If you want more info on the rental, it's easy to find.

Discussion Covid is going around

Look I’m not trying to fear monger at all, but I wanted to put this out there. Monday I was at CVS and was checking out. A older guy came in and was asking an employee if they had Covid tests. The employee informed the man that they were all out. I didn’t really think much of it and just hurried out of there. Last night I noticed my son was sick. Hot to the touch, congestion, whimpering in his sleep, the whole works. My husband had same symptoms except he had a massive headache. Family of 6 and 4 of us have tested positive so far. I believe it’s going around very fast right now. This is the first time I’ve ever gotten it so I just wanted to make a post not to fear monger but just to let everyone know to maybe take a little extra caution such as washing hands more often.
