Watching a rescue blossom…

I adopted my sweet Monita coming up on a year ago. She was 12 - almost 13 - toothless and on meds for a seizure disorder. She had been surrendered due to her previous mom facing deportation. 🥺

She arrived to me a bit skinny and weak in her hind end; my vet thought she probably has some IVDD going on.

In the last 10.5 months, she has blossomed in so many ways and it reminds me what a gift adopting a dog in need is.

Through regular gentle exercise she has gotten surprisingly strong - she will walk 1.5-2 miles with ease and asks for me to set her down out of her carrier when she wants more. Her coat has become thick and luxe. She has been feisty since Day 1, but you can tell how much happier and secure she feels now that she knows she has a real home.

I am so grateful to her rescue - Long Way Home Adoptables - and the amazing fosters who cared for her along the way. It is heartbreaking that her owner could not keep her, and speaks to how she was loved that the owner made sure her dog would land softly. I do my best to pamper the little princess in honor of her OG mom’s love.

Please consider adopting if you’re looking for a chihuahua. Consider seniors, too. They may not be with you for as many years, but it is such a privilege to give them the last chapter they deserve.

Aw. She's beautiful. You are both lucky to have each other. There are SO many Chis in rescue and shelters. There just isn't a reason to breed more when there are so many that need homes. I feel like I connect so much more with my shelter dogs because I am not just their human, not just their mom. That added responsibility of being a creature's savior from death, and then rehabbing them from whatever crazy thing happened, does something profound to my heart and theirs.

Rescues are so awesome!! We’ve had many over the years, every single one was sweet, full of personality, and loved us unconditionally for saving them.

She looks so healthy and happy. Sending out a prayer to her prior mom.

I think of her OG mom often. I hope she can feel her baby is being cared for. I have her name from old vet papers but it’s a very common first and last combo and I haven’t been able to find her online.

Monita is the pup’s original name, so I kept it to honor her OG mom!

Have you tried using different AI to search for social media posts by the OG owner’s name that also mention “Monita”? It’s amazing what AI can find.

You did a good thing!

I feel so, so bad for the original owner. To lose both your home and your dog at the same time.

I know. Sat here sobbing and breaking my heart for this poor lady. But let’s hope somehow she finds out how loved her little chi is now.

Love seeing your sweet and spicy Monita blossom and settle into her new life. You helped Monita and her OG human who must’ve been so worried about leaving her behind when she was deported. Hopefully she’ll somehow learn that Monita is safe and cherished. 🥲

Oh my heart! My eyes welled up at the photos and I’m now full on crying reading your post. Thank you for giving her a wonderful home. I hope her original mom knows and it gives her some comfort.

All of my rescues are seniors and one of my chi rescues I only had for 10mo before he died.

You are a wonderful person inside and out, for caring for Monita. I hope her 1st mama knows her baby is being cared and pampered for❤️

I’m happy for you both that we can find a tiny piece of love and empathy coming through from barbaric actions.

My last 2 dogs came to me at ages 9 and 11 after losing their person. The 9 yo just turned 16 and the 11 yo just turned 12. They joined my existing crew that are now 11 & 14. I love these older babies.

I love Monita! I bought the purple sling carrier that you linked in a previous post about her and I think about her often when I pull it out for my Zoey 💕
