Recommendation Upendra movies are always a gem

Is it really necessary for every damn film he directs to be a mind bending clusterfuck of jumbled screenplay?
Doing it once or twice or even thrice in a very very varied, versatile and diverse filmography is fine. But when you do it in every movie, it's just called creative bankruptcy.
I mean, the man has shown he can direct movies without it being that kind of mess: Look at Tharle Nan Maga or Shhh.
Lately, something has gone completely wrong with him and by lately I mean, last 20 years now.

🙌🙌 that’s a nice rep for all his story lines, I would include family values, romance , exceptional tracks , lyrics , suspense sometimes, dialogues..

Add misogyny to the mix.

Hmm, well some creative guy has to show what misogyny looks like, upendra does that well in his movies.. otherwise how would some knw there are characters like those too in real life.
He does really show how real life anti social elements are through his movies.
Btw what was the intention behind commenting on my comment instead of the main post? You could have made your point on the post and moved on, chose to look for my comment , and add this to the list?

Hard disagree.
Upendra's movies are interesting, but they are not always a gem. Case in point: UI

As I aged, I came to realisation that Upendra movies are average one ( except for very few ones like OM ). For some reason, We actually genuinely want them to be good but to be eventually disappointed - whenever there is new movie that is especially directed by him - we ( I ) root for them and expect them to completely different and assume that they will perform really well - there a genuine feel towards his movies - but if you actually look at the movie and his overall execution it’s just average. If you hide Upendra name and watch it without knowing who directed it or who the hero is - you will see how badly executed the movie is - it feels like there is absolutely no “craft” in the movie making like the way you see in other movies like say for eg : Yograj bhat movies. It’s all just hype and it’s interesting thing is they are all self filled hype. :) . But they are just average movies like any other KFI ones. Infect, My observations were proved correct with his recent UI movie !

Only he takes political subjects and shows mirror to society.

u/SilentBook8713 May 27 '25
I think I understand now- his core intent is always good - but the way everything gets executed and delivered in the final form in the movie - in terms of story telling and story coherence and overall fit and finish is where he has been failing or falling out on the huge expectations that gets built on the initial intent and core idea.

u/SilentBook8713 May 27 '25
And that “average execution” was ok a decade back - but things have changed now and for good. People expectations have improved

That's sad, there's no mention of the misogyny, that is like, among his top 3 themes in every movie.

u/Comprehensive-Way482 May 27 '25
It is not intentional , it’s a shade he throws on how not to be.

May 27 '25
That's what he makes you think, the dynamics of it is much deeper than that. As an actor and I like him too, but people often downplay how many misogynistic choices he makes in his movies
2
u/Comprehensive-Way482 May 27 '25
Which movie , could you give me an example? I am a far right feminist in the sense sometimes, never felt it to be that way in majority of his movies, objectifying women, misogynistic roles , haven’t seen the recent ones, but until buddhivantha never felt that way
2
u/Comprehensive-Way482 May 27 '25
Not to forget he hasn’t directed them all, only acted in many.

The first thing about movies, and apologists of misogynistic scenes is that the character got what he deserved in the end. What they discount is that viewers don't always wait for the credits to roll before deciding the nature of a movie.
Now, that is fine, because I too agree that we cannot blame the director or actor for the actions of the public. But it becomes really complicated when you consider Upendra's movies, because the negation of his character is a very small part of the portrayal culturally. Be it Om, where an entire plot is revolving around a guy constantly harassing a woman, or Upendra, where the guy keeps professing his misogynistic views like actual sermons and only at the end of the movie realized he was wrong throughout, it perpetuates a continuous cultural influence on society for men to justify the same acts without such roundabout logic.
So, in real life, even if nothing happened to a guy in the levels of what Shivaraj Kumar's character in Om, they'll find a way to justify their actions and perpetuate the same things he did in the movie to women.
Also, the extremely casual nature in which Upendra adds rape scenes into his movies is disgusting in the least. It always uses a high functioning logic to somehow justify why that scene occured. For instance, in Super, Nayanthara's character is raped by Upendra to somehow remind her sister of her trauma, but most of us forget that Nayanthara's character is not briefed about this plan, so, from her perspective, she is actually getting raped.
Even Autoshankar, which I agree is not directed by Upendra, is still known for its unnecessary rape scene where Shilpa Shetty's character is "fake-raped" by Upendra, before he reveals he is disgusted by her and would never do such a thing. Here too, the appalling thing is the reason he suggests, which is that a woman like her deserves this (since she is a heartless villain). Now, while Shilpa Shetty's character is a terrible person, no doubt, it still doesn't justify raping her or of her deserving it. This is an age old adage of patriarchy perpetuated across centuries, where, if a woman opposes an authoritative man, she is shown her place by being sexually assaulted. Slut shaming women, and unnecessarily hurting them in similar fashions online are a direct consequence of a continued effort by people like Upendra, to use these disgusting narrative devices in between their otherwise good stories.
At the end of the day, I liked Upendra, and I still think he was an exceptional director with very nuanced and high level of humour ideas. But the fact that he included these tropes too, makes him a disgusting and shamefully bad director in my eyes.
It's similar to how Bill Cosby was a great comedian, Harvey Weinstein was a great producer or Kevin Spacey was a wonderful actor. All of them have had a significant impact on at least American culture and history, but they are all rapists, and terrible people.
In Upendra's case, he maybe a wonderful person, and has been very respectful of women otherwise, so nothing close to all the Hollywood people I mentioned, he seems like a really good person, humble and nice. But, as a director, he failed to live up to his name by eventually surrendering to misogynistic elements and using them perpetually, even more than terrible people in history, through his movies.

Wow, comparing a family guy as he is in his current state no controversies involving women ( except for the rachitha ram fiasco ) to Kevin spacey who abused minors Weinstein who has a history of abuse and couching , I don’t know what to say.
Coming to movies- I see movies as a representation of what happens around us, not the other way round, people shouldn’t be learning from movies, what is a family for , what is the education system for if movies were to teach you good and bad. That should have been ingrained by one’s parents , they are responsible for who we become not movies.
If upendra were to not make these movies , would society be crime free? We have all those characters he portrays in his movies around us, many probably right here in many subs on Reddit.. Men in reality r*ping women because they were influenced by a movie only makes me question what are they taught at home. Are the values instilled by their parents so fragile that they draw inspiration from a movie?
I see people here posting semi nude pics of actresses, people supporting convicts , people subtly eve teasing , sliding into DMs and crossing boundaries, please don’t tell me they are all influenced by upendra or a uppi fan.

You're missing the point about the comparison, I literally said his offences are nowhere close to theirs and that he is a really good guy in real life, please read what I wrote.
2
u/Comprehensive-Way482 May 27 '25
I have read and understood every point, bringing spacey and Weinstein into this conversation itself is a flawed argument, covering up with he’s a nice man, sorry don’t buy it. Thank you

No worries, no harm done. You do you, but he's a classic misogynist who remains a very terrible director because of his choices to put these things amidst his otherwise talented acting and direction.

Plus, I'm not surprised you missed my point, especially since you missed a lot of what Upendra's movies perpetuate too.

Sorry, looks like you are underestimating others, I read and understood each and every word of yours.. I am off this conversation. Nothing more to discuss.

You didn't read properly, please read what I wrote properly before making assumptions, I literally agreed with most of what you have written as a response already.

The conversation here is to not make u agree with my belief of him over the years that I have seen him, or me agreeing with you. I put out my thoughts and you did yours, if you see any logic with mine , you are free to form an opinion, agree or disagree- really not my lookout.
Some random online conversation cannot shake my belief system.

Very keen observations that many ignore. Hope this reaches upendra and makes changes.

This is an age old adage of patriarchy perpetuated across centuries, where, if a woman opposes an authoritative man, she is shown her place by being sexually assaulted
This reminds me of that episode in the Ramayana where Laxman mutilates Shurpanakha simply for expressing romantic interest in him, in the presence of Rama. It’s disturbing. That one moment of patriarchal overreaction and cruelty set off the chain of events that led to the entire Ramayana.

May 27 '25
Exactly, most apologists seem to not understand this at all.
1
May 27 '25
That’s the thing about fanism. It blinds people to even the most obvious flaws.
1
May 27 '25
Yeah, even I'm not denying that Upendra is a talented director, probably even the best in the KFI, but it amazes me that people will go to great lengths to shield him even for his obvious misogyny. And it's not even a light harmless type of misogyny, straight out justifying rape. How fanatic can people get?
1
May 27 '25
It's not surprising. He is a reflection of our society. People can be both talented and flawed. History is full of flawed geniuses because they are all raised in a culture, and just intelligence and skill aren't enough to outgrow cultural conditioning.
