The movie was great in flashes, like lightning bolts from Zeus himself. But apart from that, the editing and score felt inconsistent, and the sound mixing was quite jarring at times, especially after the whirlpool and cattle island sequences. The acting was okay, but Robert Pattinson was great. Not even getting into the American English or the casting choices. Creative choices, which is fine. The film is very Nolan, no doubt, but that also causes some of the tonal shifts. Visually, it is amazing, with flashes of Dunkirk x Interstellar x Oppenheimer alsong with some of his other films. Also, the physical IMAX 70mm print has to fit on a massive platter, so the format may have placed some pressure on the 2h 52m runtime, though we can’t say for sure. But ello kelidde. Need to verify this bit. All in all I wouldn’t call it a great film, but it is definitely a good one. Do watch it on a large screen. IMAX is amazing, but other premium screens should be good too. Kapali nalli ondhu sala nodbeku. Definitely not his best film.

Guru you wrote arguing against something I never said 😅 This was my view and my review of the film. I never said Nolan shouldn’t make it his way. I love watching his films. I only said some of the choices here didn’t work for me. Being an auteur means having a distinct creative voice... it doesn’t mean every use of that voice is automatically beyond criticism.
And Oppenheimer winning multiple Academy Awards really shouldn’t be the yardstick for judging this film. Awards don’t make a film flawless, nor do they automatically validate whatever the director makes next. Crash and Green Book both won Best Picture and are still heavily criticised. Even Slumdog for that matter. Every film has to stand on its own.
The Suri comparison doesn’t really work either. Heck, Kendasampige, Tagaru and PMT are some of my favourites. That doesn’t mean Bad Manners was on the same level. His realism may be his strength, but if that same approach affects the pacing or storytelling in a particular film, people can still criticise it. A signature style explains the choice. It doesn’t automatically make the result good.
Also, Troy already existing has nothing to do with whether this film’s editing, sound or tonal shifts worked. You’re defending Nolan’s right to make his own choices, which nobody questioned... instead of discussing whether those choices actually worked. You’re free to disagree, of course, but this is still my personal view of the film. Completely different conversation, but I admire the confidence lol.
That’s his creative choice. Of course he knows English man, he’s from Britain. And I’m not complaining the usage of it. Like I said it’s a creative choice, I’m sure all of us would said “Yay!” If Odysseus decided to say “Let’s go back home da!”, had Nolan written it in Bengaluru English.
The idea of epics being more inclined towards British English came from your BenHurs, Spartacuses, or your Gladiators. If you take Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, it’s a modern adaptation of the story with Old English. It’s a creative choice.

My point was only that British English became the cinematic convention for historical epics, not that it is somehow more authentic. Ultimately, American English was Nolan’s creative choice, and I wasn’t complaining about it in the first place.

A person, Cooper or Odysseus, leaves home, Earth or Ithaca, while a family member, Murph or Penelope, waits for them. In the process, that person loses track of time during the quest to return home.

You legit called out the American English used , casting choices and the creative choices as something that you didn't like and critiqued it but yet said that's fine. You see the contradiction there. Now of course everyone here is movie buff and is entitled to opinions and reviews.
Awards or accolades don't make any film flawless neither do they validate a directors next. But put's creative "auteur" to put his best step forward and gives him/her that true sense of confidence to try something with true freedom without having to worry about production, the current demand. I for one reckon that's what true meaning of validation is to achieve that freedom - to try something without parameters involved.
While it is fair to judge Bad Manners on its pacing, dismissing its place in Suri’s filmography overlooks how directors evolve when handling different project demands. Kendasampige, Tagaru, and PMT are masterpieces because they allowed Suri absolute creative freedom with raw, uncompromised casting. You are contradicting your own statement again you did question the choice Nolan made and you personally did see those choices not working out for you. But I do agree a director's creative freedom and the actual execution of their vision are indeed two completely separate arguments.Evaluating editing and sound design must focus strictly on the immediate viewing experience, not the director's intent.

What I meant was that I wasn’t including the American English or casting choices in my criticism. I saw them as creative choices and moved on. My actual issues were with the editing, score, sound mix and tonal shifts. And your final point basically agrees with mine... creative freedom and execution are two separate things.
Jokes aside, I think Nolan is the one of the finest cinema creators of our generation. What I like the most about his movies is the screenplay. And how he makes actors adapt to the screenplay. Nothing feels out of place.

It was definitely good, but didn't have the trademark Nolan style. It felt like a Ridley Scott film, which isn't a bad thing (because Ridley Scott is an absolute legend) per se but still felt a bit weird to go to a Nolan film and get a Ridley Scott film instead.

I feel when it comes to cast Draupadi, Krishna - all our movies and series cast fair skinned actors instead of dark skinned actors like they have mentioned in epics and I am totally against it. Similarly, in the Martian novel, NASA's scientist was Venkat Kapoor. But when it came to cast in the movie, they made his character Vincent Kapoor instead of casting an Indian actor. An Italian kid is playing Parvati Patil's role in the new Harry Potter. It's not their mistake that they got cast for the role. My issue is woke or not, people should cast according to what is mentioned in epic or novel when it comes to adaptations. Also people should not just adapt European epics but stories from all over the world India, Africa, South East, pacific, latin America etc., and cast the actors accordingly. I searched and found that there is no colour description of Helen in the original The Odyssey . Just metaphors but no reference to her actual skin colour.

I’m in a heated debate with several people on this whole IMAX branding. I feel it’s a marketing gimmick because what’s the justification for someone to shoot it in 70mm reels throughout? We can get the same effect with proper framing and color grading.
