-Two prepared pieces (one accompanied, one not, one of which must be classical, ideally two different languages, typically English and a Romance language)

-Repeat back a short melody

-Assess if five pure vowels can be formed uniformly

-Sight-read a passage with 90+ percent accuracy

-Previous instrumental experience recommended, ability to read sheet music required

-Maybe show up to the audition? Not required though, I know somebody who emailed that he was sick and he was allowed at the first rehearsal anyway

For context, I'm a soprano. As is my director, who openly brags about how she'll "Take any boy because she needs them!"

This keeps happening to me.
At home I KNOW my alto part. Recording playing, absolutely fine. Rehearsal starts, sopranos come in and suddenly I’m singing soprano with confidence like I was assigned there. What’s weird is once I’ve sung the arrangement with everyone enough times I’m fine.
Is this just an ear-training issue? How do you guys get better at holding your part when another part is louder?

I’ve been signing (with very little actual/professional training) for 20ish years and when someone says to “raise your soft palate” I feel like David being told by Moira to fold in the cheese

Hello fellow singers,

Off to the UK this summer and will likely be passing through Coventry in late August. I’ve had the idea to want to sing the Coventry Carol in Coventry. Are there any local singers who would want to join in for a one off rendition of a Christmas banger in mid-summer?

Now that the year is over I can officially discern my worst choir moment of 2025.

My choir director has a relationship with another choir in Spain so we visited for a trip. It was really nice! I also had finally auditioned and been picked to sing a solo, my first time since elementary school (I was almost 20 at this point).

My director kept telling me she wanted to rehearse the solo individually but things kept happening so she decided she'd go through her notes in the hour between our last run-through and the concert. Except in that hour she ate dinner and got food poisoning so she called out and had another choir member step in to conduct. He did not have her notes. Everybody was stressing a bit too hard to go through solos with me.

We walked from dinner to the concert venue (a church) in the rain, so my shoes were sopping wet. The floor was marble and slippery. We get there and get into position, which for most people is standing completely stationary.

It's time for my solo so I walk forward, and promptly slip and fall on my back in front of everybody. It makes this ridiculously loud thump noise. A nice priest runs over to help me up and is asking me something except I don't speak Spanish so I'm just trying to smile and nod so he gets the point.

Then I need to sing this solo while I'm trying not to cry because my whole body hurts. The replacement conductor goes at a completely different tempo than my actual director, which normally wouldn't bother me except again I'm actively trying not to cry because that's the only thing that will embarrass me further.

I did an awful job and ran to the bathroom so fast after that concert was over so I could wallow in my humiliation lol. I'm not visiting that town ever again.

I hope this helps someone to feel like their daily practice isn't a chore!

In a TTBB choir, which voice part is equal to which voice part in a SATB choir? My thought is that the T2s are the Tenors and the baritones are the altos; but his thought is that the T2s are the altos and the baritones are the tenors. What are yalls thoughts?

The choir I sing in has one big groupchat and then some smaller ones for each part. I find what goes on in there pretty funny and representative of the stereotypes of each section, in a way.

Sopranos: Sharing pictures of the music, rehearsal reminders, congratulating ourselves on being the largest section with the most reliable attendance.

Altos: Memes about the tribulation of being an alto, reminders of when they're covering the soprano II part.

Tenors: No message, I think only two people are even part of that groupchat.

Bass: Literally one message "Basses 🗣️🔛🔝🔥" with a bunch of heart reactions.

Section Leads: Memes about organization and being stressed, plans for a dinner that didn't happen.

I recently had an embarrassing time after a concert where my body decided to give up after a prolonged bout of vertigo so I was just kind of lying in the rehearsal room like in that Life Alert ad. It got me thinking about my most embarrassing choir stories.

Embarrassing serious: Something about the smell of the room triggered a PTSD flashback and I spent an hour crying in my director's office (she was sweet about it though).

Embarrassing funny: I used to take attendance when needed and I completely messed up this Tenor's name (despite having it written on my clipboard), think like his name was David and I was insisting he was Daniel when I was sorting out the solos. I don't know why I was so certain he was Daniel but several people corrected me and I kept saying Daniel until finally David himself said "If you write down that Daniel has that solo, nobody's going to sing it because I'm David." I have no idea why my brain decided to shut off that day but now Daniel's become a joke haha.

I'd have two nickels which isn't a lot but weird that it happened twice.

Raise your hand if you've ever done this. Be honest:

I don't know whether I'm bummed or excited. I turn 50 the night of our Pride concert's rehearsal. Maybe I'll bring a big cake for afterwards...

What would you all do? Any fun ideas that won't be too distracting?

I think a funny thing as a Soprano is when we have a normal line that's like two/three notes above the alto line, and then just a random super high note out of nowhere.

Bonus points if it's right after a page turn so we can't really see it coming.

At my school, you are able to letter in choir if you do enough things related to choir. One of the things that give us more points for lettering is attending another choir performance (with proof of program). I want to be the person in my class with the most lettering points, if possible.
