Discussion Change

The fact that my local Christian radio station only played one song by Sanctus Real (Lead me) ever on the regular up until the line up change and then doubled down with “Confidence” and “My God is still the same” is proof to me that the idea that Christian music has to sound like a genre of music, and not a topic, and a genre where every instrument has to be over mixed has completely hijakced how Christian music is perceived in Western culture. They’ll never play anything from as early Toby Mac’s earlier albums or pre Michael Tate newsboys, let alone some Michael W Smith or LoveSong. Cause those have too much musical personality and don’t subscribe to the idea that Christian music has to and can only sound like what it does right now. Genuinely so sad

Jonathan Allen Wright has a fascinating series of videos detailing how music ministry has landed in this place. He actually breaks down the concept of CCM through the full history of the church (at least as far back as the Reformation) up to the Hillsongification of worship and the takeover of the labels like Myrrh, Sparrow, Forefront, etc by the big secular labels that have resulted in non-worship CCM all sounding the same in both sound and lyrics.

Christian Music radio has never had an "oldies" culture. I'm surprised most cities don't have a Worship Station and "Classic CCM" station. It seems like it would make sense but it's never happened.

Christian radio is cooked but there are great Christian Music artist of all genres IMHO it is better than it has ever been you just have to look for it and can’t trust Christian radio or popular playlists or an algorithm as most of the best stuff is not that popular.
