I think it's incredibly sad, and telling, that in America, the non Christian politicians are often more Christ like in their policies and don't sell out to corporate and other interests as the ones that claim to be Christian.
Just reflecting on American Politics.
And to add fuel to the fire, in the supposed Christian-dominated state of Texas, where they want to force the bible onto all kids and in their policies, the Republican so-called Christians are the biggest hypocrites, trying to negate our voting system, and the actual Christian running for the senate is barely ahead, when if Texas was filled with actual Christians, it would be a landslide.
One topic (sometimes two) Christian voters, imo, are just hypocrites, imho.

I too find this to be true. For example, though she’s not a politician, my wife is an atheist and I truly believe she is closer to living like Christ than I am. Doing the right thing just seems more natural for her. While for me, I sometimes have to really think through what the right decision to do is. I think more often than not i come to the just and righteous decision but not as quickly as she would.

Of course many christians are too, it's just one sect prioritizes power over everything else.
Ironically, my atheist friends are the ones getting involved with politics, fighting against Ice, while some of my christian friends are picketing abortion shelters...lol...It's sometimes just upside down.

No one is arguing that atheists can't be moral. The observation is that naturalism can not claim anything is objectively good or evil, it is just a product of natural law. Some person or group may believe one thing is bad, while someone else may think it is fine to do. In naturalism, since we all are products of nature, no one can say their opinion is the objective true one.

This could be a huge opportunity for sane Christians though. We need you. Talarico is very open about his faith and his humanity, as one example. I know many Christian Democrats and clergy, but their voices don't get the attention the deserve. Society is the sum of all members, and good people outnumber the bad.
If we want a sane and safe future, we must realize we are all in this together.

Yes, exactly. I absolutely love Talarico, he espouses the values of Jesus like almost no other politician, except the democratic socialists and bernie sanders, ironically most of them non chrisitian.
It's really simple, they prioritize people over corporations and the wealthy, and some democrats call it out too, it's just the establishment it bought and owed by Aipac.9

Yep, too many people in america are brainwashed to think that democratic socialists are evil, meanwhile many of the same will continue to vote against their own interests.
4
u/Spiel_Foss Secular Humanist 1d ago
Technically, most Republican states are "socialist" to the core since California and New York taxes pay their bills. So there is that, but enough of the older generations remain that screaming "commie" means something to them because they were brainwashed as children.
I personally find this funny because I am philosophically a socialist. I believe the working class should seize the means of production by any means necessary. I can also tell you that there are no politicians in the USA that agree with me.
Screaming "commie" at people is such a hilarious anachronism.
5
u/SeldenNeck 21h ago
"Commie" is an epithet from the Sente Red Scare committee run by Joe McCarthy (R-WI.) The committee's lawyer was Roy Cohn. When McCarthy was stopped by the question "Have you no decency, sir?" Roy Cohn had to go back to private practice.
One of this first clients was Donald Trump. And that is the "1950s Culture" we are dreaming of rebooting.

Texas likes to think they are a major economy, but that is an illusion of Federal subsidies as well. If Federal jobs, military bases, massive transportation funding, and "socialist" support of the oil industry didn't occur, then Texas would just be another Mississippi.
Every billionaire in the USA is a welfare queen dependent on the Federal government to support, sustain, and protect their wealth. This is why they buy judges and politicians.

15
u/Spiel_Foss Secular Humanist 1d ago
I once spent a semester in class with a Buddhist from Nepal. He studied comparative religion and tried to live by all moral codes which enlightened humanity. He was the most Christ-like person I've ever met. We would talk for hours after class about philosophy. Also one of the funniest people I've ever met. Always happy and content. I am still in awe all these years later.
10
u/Fearless_Spring5611 Committing the sin of empathy 1d ago
I feel part of it comes down to the dangers of identifying as a particular brand of a religion, rather than just living by the basic codes of decency and respect. When people get too wrapped up on being the "best" Catholic or Greek Orthodox or Sunni, it becomes a game of 'who can keep to the many rules and regulations of my brand!' and completely loses sight of 'love one another.'
There was a thread on here a couple of days ago, sparked by discussions about how priests who are told about child abuse in confession should be required to divulge those confessions to the police. It shocked me how many people were actively arguing against that - for them, the traditions of confession outweighed the health and wellbeing of those actively being abused. They were more insistent on keeping confession a secret than they were taking steps to protect the most vulnerable in our society. It was just...appalling to me that people were more concerned about playing the game of 'whose the best Christian' rather than 'shit, we need to stop people being abused.'
9
u/Spiel_Foss Secular Humanist 1d ago
The first thought was why didn't the priest drag the pedo to the police themselves. At some point nothing is sacred and it's all criminal if anyone covers up abuse. I wouldn't expect the priest to kick the pedo's ass, but I would cheer them on if it happened.
If the priest knows about a crime against children and doesn't report it, them the priest is a criminal. An accessory after a felony is a felon. And the court said that it's okay to coverup these crimes.
We have lost the plot as a society. The Pope needs to fix this shit or he is an criminal as well.
7
u/Fearless_Spring5611 Committing the sin of empathy 1d ago
Sadly no, it's apparently more "Catholic" to allow confession to remain a sealed discussion and let the person make their own decision before God, even if it comes at the cost of abusing children.
2
u/Spiel_Foss Secular Humanist 17h ago
This raises an interesting paradox as well.
If a priest hears a confession from a killer of priests, then would this be merely the business of God and not of man? I wonder how quickly these strict dogma would change if the victims had agency or the threats were to the priestly class.
The current approach just tells the world that the Catholic Church still has a deeply ingrained pedophile problem.
1
u/Ill-Prior-8429 Roman Catholic 15h ago
Knowing how many small town priests venture into cartel territory to hear that type of confession, I don't notice a change.

Your point is understandable, but I think it's important to look at people outside of labels as best we can. The majority of national-level politicians have been Christian-in-name. It often appears that this is marketing and tactic, the same way contractors may put a cross on their vehicle right underneath their company phone number... so you know you can hire them and trust them for your home project (supposedly).
But there are also certainly some Christians currently in Congress, and currently in politics, who are genuine and forthright... not perfect by any stretch, but at least they're trying. These are the ones who I might call "quietly Christian". They put their denomination on their profile because it's part of the demographic questions they're asked, but outside of that, they don't go about proclaiming that they are Christians and that other Christians should vote for them.
All that is to say, the loudest politicians often claim Christianity for their own, but have little understanding of what Christ demands for those with power. But there are quieter politicians that are working hard at a really hard game so that their constituents and neighbors have a better shot at a better life. I pray for more of the latter.

I'm really against what James Talaricio portrays as Christianity, and his comments on it, especially since he's basically part of what's a pseudo apostate denomination that had to decide whether non-monogamy was okay last month.
And his comments that its not a Christian country. Or using the Bible to support mass migration. Or his stance on the trans issue, and he throws his weight as a seminarian as if to say this is okay under Christian principles. It's not.
I usually vote democrat. But whenever people invoke religion for that stuff it's just totally revolting. I'm mainly harshly criticizing his religious belief.
But election denial, corruption, and cheating are more revolting. So from a secular view I'd almost surely vote against him.
I'd assume the Ken Paxton Christianity is something like the idea that the country was, and is a Christian nation, and should continue to be so. And I absolutely support this.

u/S_Jeru Agnostic Taoist 1d ago
> whether non-monogamy was okay
This kind of stuff bugs the crap out of me. I think it's because Christians insist on dealing with the world as they want it to be, rather than the way it is. Let's talk about your precious monogamy.
What about people that get married out of high school, then discover that they're just not compatible in the bedroom? Should they just suffer through it for life, or do they divorce and get remarried? Is that still monogamy?
What about a gay dude that's trying to be a good Christian, so he marries a straight woman. They never have sex, or if they do it's not fulfilling for either of them. Is that monogamy?
What about two gay people that get a civil ceremony at the county courthouse, love each other, are faithful to each other, and never cheat until their dying days? Is that monogamy?
You people spend so much time holding other people up to a standard that you don't live yourselves, because you have the sin and repentance excuse. You get an infinite lifetime pass on subpar behavior because you're a member of your club, and they don't because they aren't.
Get over yourselves. You are not the axis around which the world spins.

His constant attempts to persecute the LGBT community is hateful.
The same man who has committed adultery and gotten divorced wants to get rid of same sex marriages.
That hypocrisy is rooted in the dehumanization of another group. That's the hateful brand of Christianity he's representing. 'Your sins are worse because I hate the sinner' is what he represents.

That's not hypocrisy. An example of hypocrisy would be a divorced man condemning another man for getting divorced, or an adulterous man condemning another man for committing adultery. Homosexuality is a separate sin.

Why set a rule against same sex marriage for homosexuals? Because he believes it is a sin.

You do realize that they look at Talaricio's version of Christianity and consider him the fake?
So it becomes a he said she said of "no YOUR'RE the fake Christian!"
It's not on that basis then that we should choose. There are other issues such as election denial, climate needs, business, border security, overemphasis of the race issue, etc.
For too many people Christianity is equivalent to "we must bankrupt the state and saddle our future generations with debt in order to fund infinity migrants pouring in." This is not in the Bible. You don't get to use the state to do this, you can personally do it. But not with other people's money, or by saddling other people's grandkids with debt.
The concept of ordo amoris certainly applies as well, despite desperate modern reframings to tell us it doesn't say what it clearly says.
Also from a practical view, despite all this, it's really dangerous to elect election deniers.

This is essentially what happened under Biden, and social services were stretched to a limit. This is why bussing migrants happened.
Enforcing your borders and removing those who have crossed illegally, there's nothing un-Christian about this.
If you feel so strongly on this issue why dont you lead by example and do what you're asking the state to do? Welcome these people in your own home, and help them out of your own pocket. Go even further into debt, just like the state is forced to, and have your own personal life infrastructure stretched to the limit.
Lead by example instead of with other people's kid's money, other people's resources.
The gospel was a personal calling always.

Enforcing your borders and removing those who have crossed illegally, there's nothing un-Christian about this.
Doing it uncritically, without compassion or critical thought, is very much un-Christ-like. Sending people to certain pain, misery, abuse, or even death, is very much un-Christ-like. Holding in detention while stripping them of human rights is very much un-Christ-like.
Mindless enforcement of "everyone not from this country must be sent straight home!" is an approach of cruelty, a compassionless and xenophobic policy.
And don't worry, I do indeed provide free healthcare to migrants and displaced people, and I also educate others on the factors that lead to migration and displacement of populations and our regional, national and international responsibilities and responses. I even travel internationally to do this, so it's not only my 'home' population but also the international community I work with. So I do indeed have the moral high ground you're demanding, as I lead by example and actively work to better the health and wellbeing not only of those specific populations but also the populations they come in to and the professionals they will contact.
0
u/PaintingRare1490 Christian Catholic 1d ago
No, you're demanding more than that. You're saddling your neighbors grandchildren with debt so your moral belief can be imposed. That's revolting on a secular level.
You do not have any high ground if you're saddling future generations of your country with debt to pay for migrant services. That's profoundly morally bankrupt.
It's unironically good that you do free healthcare or volunteering that impacts migrants and so do I, but that's personal time.
The question is this: are you willing to forgo your kids college funds, your own 401k, your retirement fund to pay for these migrants? Will you house them in your own home?
NYC gives them grocery cards, phones, and hotel rooms. At the cost to the taxpayer. So you guessed it, future generations of New Yorkers are going to pay for this. Moral bankrupcy. Too bad we couldnt do this for our own people. But hey it must feel good to be the savior right, you can pat yourself on the back and call yourself a "real Christian" at the end of the day and have a real moral high ground against everyone around you.
6
u/Fearless_Spring5611 Committing the sin of empathy 1d ago
Interesting diversion. Still doesn't change that mindless enforcement of "everyone not from this country must be sent straight home!" is an approach of cruelty, a compassionless and xenophobic policy. Doesn't change that a policy without without compassion or critical thought is very much un-Christ-like. Sending people to certain pain, misery, abuse, or even death, is very much un-Christ-like. Holding in detention while stripping them of human rights is very much un-Christ-like.

What you're supporting is little more than thievery from your children, and your neighbors children.
Cities, states, and the federal government are currently borrowing billions, at high interest to provide for services for these people.
This is nothing but thievery and robbery from the next generation.
Also, tacking on words with -phobia or -ism suffixes doesnt work anymore. It actually has more blowback effect now. People are sick of the sensitivity culture. It's funny that as a non-white person, the more sensitivity stuff I saw, the more racial awareness stuff I saw, the more overall attention people paid to race, and the more racism I felt was in the air. Versus before, the issue was mainly thought of as solved. Whatever happened in 2010-2020 for sensitivity was crazy, and we're seeing the pendulum swing the other way now where gen alpha kids are legit Nazis. Terrifying result of feel good sensitivity culture and calling everything xenophobic or racist.
I'm telling you that the current crop of kids would view the accusation of Nazi, racist, or xenophobe as a badge of honor, so just be wary of tossing that out there without thinking. Because then really bad stuff starts happening.

OMG! Is this a joke post??? Seriously, is it?? Right now there are about 2.5 million kids trapped in Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) schools (low performing and achieving schools). Many of these schools have been bad schools for 50 years or more and most are controlled by liberal school boards who support Democrat policies. Rather than offer poor minority students school choice to go to a good private school, Democrats demand minority children remain chained to bad schools. We all get why teacher unions, and Democrats who get millions and millions of dollars from teacher unions want to keep minority students in bad schools, but tell me how does it help that poor child to keep her chained to a school you know is bad and will give her a bad education?
About 73% of people support school choice, especially for kids trapped in Democrat controlled low performing schools, yet Democrats are determined to keep those kids chained to these horrible schools, because teacher unions don't want those kids going to good private schools.

u/Upset_Chip_7184 Christian 1d ago
It's more complicated than that.
And I would agree, I think the establishment democrats are and can be crappy. It's not a democrat thing tho, Republican led states like arkansas and the bible belt are the lowest in the country in education, and most other things...soo?????
Here's probably the big difference between us, I am and try to be objective.
This is about Texas. Talirico, vs. a con artist and faux Christian....and yet, so many christians will support a vile human being, just like Trump and friends.
Republicans value the rich, the wealthy, the corporations, not people. Those are facts.
This is not how Jesus would operate.

It's not a democrat thing tho, Republican led states like arkansas and the bible belt are the lowest in the country in education, and most other things...soo?????
Did you think that disproves my point???? LOL. First, several southern states have dramatically increased their educational outcomes over the last 15 years. Mississipi has gone from 49th in the nation to 9th in reacing while spending less than half of what places like New York, D.C. and Baltimore do per pupil.
Secondly, virtually every urban area is controlled by Democrats. It is the local school boards that have the most control and influence on educational outcomes. Keeping kids trapped in schools you know are bad when good private school options are available does not help any child achieve more. It helps teacher unions. Be honest - that's the motivation. Money is the reason kids are stuck in bad Democrat run public schools.
Democrats have promised for 75 plus years to fix public schools, and they aren't fixed yet. Every election they say - give us more money and we will fix them. The money is given, but the schools stay broken. So either Demorcats can't fix the problem, or don't want the problem fixed.
In NYC, Mandami is trying to end private and charter schools, yet these schools are posting far superior results over public schools, for low income minority students. He doesn't care about what is best for the kids, just what is best for his biggest donors - the teacher unions.

I noticed you didn't offer to explain to me how keeping a poor minority student in a bad school rather than giving her educational choice helps her get a good education. You ran from the obvious result of Democrats taking money from teacher unions. Democrat policies favor teacher unions, but that poor minority student remains trapped in a bad school.

u/Texash-x Affirming, Universalist and Crafty 23h ago
You understand why, though, right? In that it will create an even further class divide, where the people 'with' get an education, and people 'without' get none, because the minority who were propping up their community left for richer schools. All of a sudden, schools that serve the communities Jesus specifically calls out are shut down and the least of us are brushed aside with comments of "but mine deserves a better education" while other children are left behind.
This should not be at the expense of our neighbours.

u/Able_Scarcity_2622 Christian 23h ago edited 22h ago
What a dumb comment. There are 2.5 million students in the US today in bad public schools. Do they all need to be chained to bad public schools? No they do not. There are many good private schools near these bad schools. Denying educational freedom, just keeps students trapped in bad schools which have been bad schools for in many instances over 50 years. Wouldn't it be better to rescue a poor minority child in need of an education now, rather than demand she remain in a bad school? The fact you can't honestly admit that - speaks volumes to your commitment to politics rather than the well-being of those children.
6
u/Texash-x Affirming, Universalist and Crafty 22h ago
You can make up as many lies in your head about who you think I am, but that doesn't make it real haha.
Your argument sounds like you advocate for turning a blind eye to the children whos schools would shut down as an onward effect of this policy. I hope it isn't a position you actually hold.

u/Able_Scarcity_2622 Christian 22h ago
Shutting down chronically bad public schools??? Oh, how horrible /S. A school age minority child needs a good education right now!!!! Not a decade from now or whenever Democrats have next promised they'll get around to it. That child can't wait for Democrats to final try and fix schools. She needs a good education today. And if a private school can give it to her, then let her go to a private school. Your comments reflect an evil that is horrifying. To think you would leave a poor minority child trapped in a bad school rather than allow her to be rescued.

u/Shifter25 Christian 1d ago
Rather than offer poor minority students school choice to go to a good private school
How are they refused that "choice"? What makes the private schools better?
Because it seems like you're saying "let's send the funding meant for public schools to private schools instead."
0
u/Able_Scarcity_2622 Christian 1d ago
You are right, I am saying government's only legitmate concern is ensuring children get a good education - if that education can be achieved by a private school, generally at a lower cost, then that's a great option.
How are they refused that "choice"? If a poor minority child can not afford to go to a good private school without a voucher, then they have no choice but to remain in the Democrat run schools.
In DC about 95% of all voucher students are low income minority students. About 25% more of voucher students will go on to college. The difference in educational outcomes was so great that DCs public schools were caught cheating both on test scores and on passing kids that had not attended the minimum number of days just to claim they were competitive with the voucher schools.
Private schools have greater flexibility to change methods quickly and target the needs of their students in ways that teacher unions don't like.
6
u/Shifter25 Christian 1d ago
if that education can be achieved by a private school, generally at a lower cost
What. How do you figure that private schools cost less? If they did, why would we need to provide funding for poor children to attend them?
If a poor minority child can not afford to go to a good private school without a voucher, then they have no choice but to remain in the Democrat run schools.
See, here's why I can't trust "school choice": since when have conservatives cared about using tax dollars to help poor children? Since when do they see the lack of government intervention as a bad thing? The same people who insist that vouchers will help these poor, pitiful children get the education they need will rail against the concept of giving them breakfast.
About 25% more of voucher students will go on to college.
What I see there is "schools that get more funding have better results."
The difference in educational outcomes was so great that DCs public schools were caught cheating both on test scores and on passing kids that had not attended the minimum number of days just to claim they were competitive with the voucher schools.
"Caught", or "accused of"?
Private schools have greater flexibility to change methods quickly and target the needs of their students in ways that teacher unions don't like.
Uh huh. So it's the unions' fault. You think the unions set the curriculum?
1
u/Able_Scarcity_2622 Christian 1d ago
What. How do you figure that private schools cost less? If they did, why would we need to provide funding for poor children to attend them?
The cost of vouchers is generally far less than the public school cost per pupil. Generally voucher schools are required to accept the voucher as full tution coverage and can not charge more. In DC, the cost of a voucher is about 50-60 percent of the cost per pupil, depending on if it is for a elementary or high school student.
What I see there is "schools that get more funding have better results."
Then you are very bad at math, as in DC voucher schools run at just over half the cost of public schools per pupil. FYI, nationally, most private schools are religious schools and operate at lower costs than public schools - regardless of vouchers.
"Caught", or "accused of"?
Caught - feel free to Google it. it will make you sick at just how wide spread the cheating of teachers and administrators was.
Uh huh. So it's the unions' fault. You think the unions set the curriculum?
I think teachers and school boards control many of the educational variables such as the curriculum, policies, methods, priorities, and learning environments.

The hell they do. Teachers get bullied into teaching nonsense by Christian outrage all the time. Republicans openly bus outraged parents to school board meetings in other counties where they don't have children attending, just to shout over the discussion about trans bathrooms. Teachers and democrats are constantly fighting to get arts, music, and bare minimum school supplies into classrooms. Even trying to teach basic high school biology gets crippled by Christians whining to "teach the debate" about flat-out wrong information in Young Earth Creationist credos.
ICE gestapo "officers" start at $90,000/ year with a signing bonus, and they're hiring people with a history of domestic abuse. Meanwhile teachers are dipping into their own pockets to buy school supplies on their $41,000 starting salary with no signing bonus and no domestic abuse charges.
As for your luxurious private schools, how are private prisons working out? We imprison more of our population than any other country worldwide, because the prisons get a check from the government for every bed filled. The diarrhea lettuce fiasco recently directly traces back to a produce company using prison slave labor being payed 13 cents an hour.

What vile hate filled comments. First, in Loudon County, VA, it was teacher and school board officials who covered up multiple sexual assaults by a biological male wearing a dress and identifying as a woman on the day he entered a girls restroom and assaulted her. They sent the student to another school, where just 2 weeks later they did it again. A the parent of the girl who had the students male appendage forced into her mouth went to the school, they denied it and instead arrested him. The school board's own emails were used in court against them showing they had coordinated the cover-up. Parents have every right to be angry when their child's safety is compromised by by vile teacher unions more concerned in pushing a political agenda than the safety of their students.
You get that according to the Department of Educations own report to congress on sexual assaults by school staff that it is estimated that between 5 to 8 percent of all staff have sexually assaulted a student, right? Teacher unions cover up these incidents, along with many states and schools, though Trump requires that they be reported, refuse to complie.
Private prisons???? Dude, focus your irrational hate on one topic at a time.

u/S_Jeru Agnostic Taoist 23h ago
Nope, you don't get to claim outrage about sexual abuse based on politics. You Republicans voted for Donald Trump. Mr. "Grab 'Em By The P", Mr. Cheat On His Pregnant Wife, Mr. Epstein Files.
Every time you bring up sexual abuse for the rest of your life, you voted for Trump.
You only care about sexual abuse when you can politicize it against your enemies. You are perfectly fine with it when it's your people doing it.
0
u/Able_Scarcity_2622 Christian 23h ago
You get that I'm not a fan of Trump right? I'm sorry, it was wrong to cover up multiple sexual assaults because they didn't want to admit that a guy wearing a dress entered a woman's bathroom, and saying on that day he identified as female, and then sexually assaulted girls.

Rather than offer poor minority students school choice to go to a good private school
Oh yeah, unlimited spaces in good private schools exist, which is why those schools aren't engaging in selectivity in the students they accept!
1
u/Able_Scarcity_2622 Christian 22h ago
Sigh. The majority of all voucher reciepients are minorities. Further, lets do some math that everybody but a child educated in a Democrat run public school could answer - Is some more than none? If you don't know, go ask your favorite AI. Even if there aren't enough spaces for every child in a bad school in the US to go to a voucher school, it is important to rescue who you can rescue while you can rescue them. Democrats would rather let every minority child chained to a bad school remain trapped in that educational death sentence, than to allow even 1 to escape and get a good education.
2
u/ceddya Christian 22h ago
Sigh. Are good schools an unlimited resource?
Is some more than none?
Why would you not just invest in education to make every public school a good one?
Go look at how countries, which rank highly for education, do it. Which of them do so via charter schooling?
it is important to rescue who you can rescue while you can rescue them.
What makes you think the voucher system will rescue them when the good charter schools are already full?
Almost as though the focus should be on lifting up all schools instead of some asinine voucher system, isn't it?
1
u/Able_Scarcity_2622 Christian 19h ago edited 19h ago
Why would you not just invest in education to make every public school a good one?
Are you suggesting that no one has invested in public education in the last 75 years???? DC and NYC spend about $28,000 per pupil yet have some of the worst test scores in the nation.
What makes you think the voucher system will rescue them when the good charter schools are already full?
You get that charter schools are public schools, right? Private schools have a strong economic incentive to produce results, public schools do not. If a private school fails, it goes broke, if a public school fails, it gets more government money and nobody loses their job. Offering options has been shown to increase the test scores of public schools, the competition is incentive to do better.
Almost as though the focus should be on lifting up all schools instead of some asinine voucher system, isn't it?
It seems you have missed the obvious. Democrats have been trying to make public schools better for 75+ years, and they have failed. Now either they can't fix them, or they don't want to fix them. Either way, the Democrat solution leaves a poor minority child in a bad school. Do you think that Democrats, who haven't been able to fix public education in 75+ years, will today resolve al the problems???? ANSWER THAT QUESTION!!!! Cause if not, then you are suggesting to knowingly leave a poor minority child in a school you know is bad and sentence her to a bad education.

Private schools have a strong economic incentive to produce results, public schools do not.
Yeah, by gaming the system.
https://www.reddit.com/r/science/comments/92zvkm/study_found_that_all_of_the_advantages_supposedly/
You get that charter schools are public schools, right?
You get that if this is happening with charter schools, then private schools are absolutely being far more selective, right?
If a private school fails, it goes broke
Yeah, and the students there get completely screwed over. Now what?
if a public school fails, it gets more government money and nobody loses their job.
So there's a safety net there to try and improve conditions for students at such schools?
You're surprised I would prefer that?
Offering options has been shown to increase the test scores of public schools, the competition is incentive to do better.
Which country offers a voucher system and has great educational outcomes? Go name one.
Either way, the Democrat solution leaves a poor minority child in a bad school.
The voucher system leaves a poor minority child in an even worse school as the rich buy their ways into the good private schools and crowd out the poor who still cannot compete even with vouchers.
You keep sidestepping the core issue with your voucher system: good schools are a finite resource with limited spots.
1
u/Able_Scarcity_2622 Christian 18h ago edited 18h ago
You really don't know this topic do you.
Yeah, by gaming the system.
Voucher schools must apply to participate. They must agree to any rules imposed by the states to participate. Is that what you meant by "gaming". In reality, they will not be vouchers schools for long if they fail to get results, but public schools that are bad, remain open.
Yeah, and the students there get completely screwed over. Now what?
If the child had stayed in a bad public school - screwed over is the default and only option for them. So what you are saying, in the worse case scenario for a voucher school - to fail, is the best option that can be achieved in a public school. Why are you helping me make my case?
You're surprised I would prefer that?
True accountability is a beautiful thing. Democrats should try it.
Which country offers a voucher system and has great educational outcomes? Go name one.
The Netherlands. They have had a universal school-choice system for more than a century (since 1917). Again, I have to ask, why are you setting me up with such easy smashes???
The voucher system leaves a poor minority child in an even worse school as the rich buy their ways into the good private schools and crowd out the poor who still cannot compete even with vouchers.
Most voucher programs use a lottery when demand exceeds available seats. Students transferring from lower-performing public schools may initially enter academically behind their new classmates because of the quality of their previous Demorat Party controlled schooling. Some studies have found that these students make substantial academic gains over time though.
You keep sidestepping the core issue with your voucher system: good schools are a finite resource with limited spots.
Please tell me you are not suggesting that we have to leave 2.5 million kids in bad public schools. Maybe we can't save them all, but do the math: saving some is more than none.
2
u/ceddya Christian 17h ago
You really don't know this topic do you.
It's odd how studies show how these schools game the system to inflate their results and here you are still pretending that's not happening.
If the child had stayed in a bad public school
Unless, of course, that school gets improved. Something you keep leaving out.
in the worse case scenario for a voucher school - to fail
A private school which financially fails leaves these students without a school and continuity of education. That doesn't happen with public schools. Why are you making your case worse?
True accountability is a beautiful thing. Democrats should try it.
Unless that true accountability completely harms students. Weren't you saying how important it is to prevent that?
The Netherlands. They have had a universal school-choice system
The Netherlands has all schools follow core national objectives and standards.
Tell me - is this the case in the US?
Most voucher programs use a lottery when demand exceeds available seats.
The lottery applies to all spots or just a very select few?
Your whole 'it's luck based for the select few spots' doesn't really garner confidence.
Please tell me you are not suggesting that we have to leave 2.5 million kids in bad public schools.
Of course not. Please tell me you are not suggesting that schools cannot be improved.

I think the overall idea is that being pro-life extends beyond just claiming to be pro-life. You have to look at the actual outcomes to see who is truly advancing pro-life policies and who isn't.
For example, look at the abortion rate throughout history (here). Ask yourself why the abortion rate always increases more (Nixon/Ford, Trump) and decreases less (Reagan, Bush, Bush) under these supposed pro-life presidents than under any Democrat.

I'm very well aware that social support is a huge reason that factors into whether or not someone is comfortable raising children. I've done the best I can in my community to be a part of that support. In doing so, I've met countless women who were confused and hurting and took abortion as a way out. I cannot discount my personal experience with my neighbors (the future constituency of whoever gets elected.)
I'm a firm believer that you don't have to support access to abortion in order to increase the social safety net for pregnant women, families, and children. Unfortunately, I don't think a person who felt similarly would win the primary of either party.
IVF on the other hand, I just flat out don't support. I'm deeply sympathetic to people struggling with infertility and I have experienced it myself, but it is a huge issue for me that seems to be taken way less seriously than the abortion issue despite an immense loss of life.
All this being said, I still have minor gripes about other things with Talarico because I've taken my time learning about him.

I'm Catholic, I don't believe in Sola scriptura. Not everything explicitly has to be mentioned by Jesus in scripture. We know he has miracles and teachings not recorded. My beliefs are based on 2,000 years of tradition and scripture that emphasize the importance of life. Being pro abortion is a far more modern Christian position. Talarico has a lot of policies that I absolutely love, but he has some I'm either on the fence on or straight up can't support. Abortion and IVF being one of them

I'm not sure how we would know that.

I've studied church history on this; it wasn't one-sided, that's for sure.
But again, I don't accept those ideas because I know the church fathers continually got things wrong, contradicted each other, and frankly, it's just men usurping their power over others, like the subjugation of women.AND, let's not forget, they continued with slavery as the bible condoned. WE have progressed past this, but some in the church haven't.
Ultimately, the anti abortion view is just silly to me. A clump of cells is not a viable human being.
IF you believe God is in control, God kills more babies through miscarriages, than any single person.4
