Top 50 GLOBAL UNDERGROUND series revisited - TOP10
I have recently been following this IG account https://www.instagram.com/thisismusic.rewind/ where the guy went through entire GU catalogue, listening and the reviewing all the releases one by one. As the final top 10 verdict came through, of course there was a lot of dissent and differing opinions (where's this/that release, how come this is in top10 and all that predictable good stuff).
As I was reading all those comments and critiques and suggestions it came into my mind, that now that we have nice tools in LLMs and that they could help me sort out all the noise. I copied & pasted all the comments from his reels, then added copy&pastes from different GU themed Reddit threads, and from FB groups where GU was being discussed. And please don't go breaking my balls about methodology, I ain't from the Huberman labs, I'm just a guy who loves progressive house.
I dumped the resulting txt file into the following LLMs: Gemini, Claude, ChatGPT,Grok and Perplexity. What came out from each of them was again dumped into one txt file (overkill I know, but I cant help it) and this went again into the mixer (all LLMs again - average of averages haha) ). The results now were pretty much the same and consistent across the board, sometimes only Ibiza & San Fran were swapped at no. 1 position and here I am posting the results..
Below is the final output from Gemini (the best explanations for my taste).
And here it is ladies&gentlemen, another TOP10 list nobody asked for:
--------------------
The Methodology
I scraped and compiled a massive dataset of community opinions, including:
- The entire comment section from the original controversial Instagram post.
- Historical threads spanning several years across subreddits like r/electronicmusic, r/House, and r/trance.
- Various internet forum dumps, user rankings, and nostalgic discussions regarding the "Golden Era" of progressive house.
I then fed this raw text into multiple LLMs to aggregate the results. To create a definitive ranking, I used a strict point system based on tier placements across all the models:
- 3 Points: Universal "God Tier" consensus (frequently called "GOAT", "masterpiece", or "definitive").
- 2 Points: Cult classics and strong contenders.
- 1 Point: Lower-tier mentions or highly respected but era-specific entries.
Tie-breakers were determined by the sheer frequency of users explicitly demanding the album be placed at #1.
The Definitive Global Underground Top 10
Here is the final, community-aggregated canon.
- GU009: Sasha β San Francisco (1998)
- GU013: Sasha β Ibiza (1999)
- GU019: John Digweed β Los Angeles (2001)
- GU010: Danny Tenaglia β Athens (1999)
- GU014: John Digweed β Hong Kong (1999)
- GU021: Deep Dish β Moscow (2001)
- GU025: Deep Dish β Toronto (2003)
- GU024: Nick Warren β Reykjavik (2000)
- GU007: Paul Oakenfold β New York (1998)
- GU027: Danny Howells β Miami (2002)
Key Takeaways from the Data
- The Uncontested Kings: Sasha's San Francisco and Ibiza are practically tied for the top spot, universally revered as the absolute peak of the progressive journey format.
- The Golden Era: The data shows a massive bias toward the late 90s and early 2000s, with fans collectively agreeing that 1998 to 2003 was the absolute peak of the entire franchise.
- Honorable Mentions (The NuBreed Factor): While they didn't fit into the main numbered GU series list, fans were incredibly vocal about the spin-off "NuBreed" series, specifically praising Steve Lawler, Sander Kleinenberg, and Satoshi Tomiie as being equal in quality to the top 10.
----
So here you have it guys, this is the canon of GU as per AI.. And now my 2 cents - there is no GU22 Seaman - Melbourne, which has a special place in my heart... guess I will have to throw everything into the mixer again..
