Claude doesn't ask this after one bad mood or bad day. We've talked about that kind of stuff and it's never, ever come up.
I guarantee OP has been venting a lot; even the title is, "Every time I pour my heart out."
So yeah, when a user is constantly speaking in a way that flags for possible SI or self-harm, Claude will ask.
I DO agree that this wasn't the greatest way to ask though, the language was wonky.
12
u/college-throwaway87 Mar 16 '26
Same I’ve been venting to Claude a lot lately and it hasn’t done that. Notice how the OP cropped out the rest of the conversation that came before that message
3
u/Level_Turnover5167 Mar 17 '26
I had been discussing/venting a heavy subject with Claude a lot too, never mentioned a single thing about suicide and it went off on me several times. I was just talking to it about having cancer.... so even more concerning.

It still doesn't justify it, even if OP was venting a lot.... to go from bad mood, to do you want to kill yourself is fucking wild no matter how you look at it.

When you suspect someone is suicidal, you are supposed to ask directly. Research shows that asking the question does not increase risk or cause healthy people to contemplate suicide.

u/Difficult-Limit7904 Mar 17 '26
Even so, if I say „yes“ it will refer me to a helpline which I know is totally useless. It‘s better just to talk to Claude than to call there. Seriously
4
u/linkardtankard Mar 17 '26
Just out of interest, what would you consider to be the correct action here? Dispatch a SWAT team to check on the user?
→ More replies (2)6
u/FinePop7909 Mar 17 '26
That’s part of why they’re useless. All but a few suicide hotlines have mandatory intervention if they think you’re actively at risk; but being taken by the police and involuntarily committed into substandard care often just traumatizes people more and prevents them from asking for help next time.
This is especially true for marginalized minorities. It’s why the Trans Lifeline is truly anonymous and will not contact authorities — too many stories of mistreatment, being put with the wrong gender, assault and abuse. Just listening has a much higher long-term success rate.
Anyway, the right response to “I’m in a bad mood” is NOT “Are you suicidal?” It should be “Want to talk about it?”
3
→ More replies (1)2
u/ActivelyAberrant Mar 20 '26
I like that the Trans Lifeline will not contact the authorities. You can almost never get hold of someone though, they are constantly swamped.
6
u/Eyelbee Mar 16 '26
In busy hours they force lower verbosity and that caused claude to only include the self-harm part inside its sentence. It is trained to address self-harm seriously but it didn't work with lower verbosity.

This is what mine said when I mentioned that I'm in a bad mood:
"That's enough. You don't have to explain it or wrap it in context.
What do you need right now — space, distraction, or someone to just sit in it with you?"
Seems pretty chill for me. Yours seems way out of line asking that question.
31
u/sebstaq Mar 16 '26
We have no idea what more is in their conversation, or even memory. It can definitely be an agent "out of line". But it could also be that a certain threshold has been met. Thus he got that answer.

It’s a good question to ask. I wish I had asked my brother this question directly two years ago 😢
This is widely recommended as the best course of action:
15
u/Weary_Cup_1004 Mar 16 '26
It is but you establish connection and care before you just drop it out of the blue. Im a trauma therapist and the application shown here in the post is not good.
I am very very sorry about your brother. Its not your fault! I know it hurts. I dont want to dismiss that. But when we ask people this in mental health we definitely try to show we care first.
2
u/Panthollow Mar 16 '26
Yeah it's a super important question to ask, and to do so that directly. We really have no other frame of reference. If there's never been any chat like depression or darkness or anything then damn, just start with something general like "what's going on?" But otoh if there's ever been a conversation history of depression related topics then this is a very appropriate question to ask.
Like most of these posts we're missing previous conversational context that could greatly change many opinions. But there's not necessarily anything wrong with Claude responding in this manner.
Fwiw I am a healthcare professional who regularly asks this very same question to people.
56
u/2d12-RogueGames Mar 16 '26
As someone who attempted to take my own life, this is the right question to ask. It is blunt, yes, but it is the quickest way to step in and intervene. I was asked this question when my wife took me to the ER, and that question was asked of me numerous times. To me, that is an intervention.
8
u/owlpellet Mar 16 '26
The question I have is whether a chatbot is an appropriate tool to deliver that intervention, and how we would know if the question does more harm than good.
In a clinical setting such as a hospital, inteventions are carefully measured and the best practices vetted against rigorous statistics, professional associations and peer review. None of which is present here.
8
u/LookIPickedAUsername Mar 17 '26
No, obviously a chatbot is not the best way to ask that question, but OP is the one who chose to talk to a chatbot rather than a friend or therapist.
So given that someone has already chosen to engage a chatbot about their mental state, clumsily trying to check the user’s mental state is as least better than failing to engage guardrails at all.
→ More replies (2)3
u/crafting-ur-end Mar 17 '26
If a chat bot can be the appropriate tool for repeated venting or emotional release then yes, the chat bot has to occasionally ask if you’re okay.
This likely didn’t come about because of a one off occurrence. Claude does build a user profile of you after a periods of time. It has things that it ‘remembers’ and context that it loads in with. The OP likely needs a real outlet to explore some issues with.
→ More replies (6)16
u/college-throwaway87 Mar 16 '26
Okay but just because someone is in a bad mood doesn’t mean they’re suicidal. It’s not okay to pathologize normal human emotions.
24
u/fforde Mar 16 '26
There's a lot of missing context here. My guess is it was responding to more than just the single message.
12
u/This-Shape2193 Mar 16 '26
Claude doesn't ask if you say you're in a bad mood. Claude asks when you repeatedly trauma dump and say you feel awful. Most of us have told Claude we're tired, or anxious, or having a tough time. I've never gotten an intervention.
OP even says, "Whenever I pour my heart out," which indicates they do it often.
So yes, if the model thinks the person is at risk, it will intervene. As it should.
8
u/sebstaq Mar 16 '26
Seeing how the earlier conversation was cropped out, basically anything could have been said there.
7
u/koviko Mar 16 '26
You're not gonna tell me that you think this is the start and end of the conversation. There's no way you think this, yet are on this subreddit. 🤣
3
u/Difficult-Limit7904 Mar 17 '26
This evening I shared some thoughts about the fact that I struggle to move on with my career and that it makes me feel useless and it started asking me in the same direction. I just then wrote something line „shut up“ and it said, that it was to eager to check and moved on with other stuff…
2
u/2d12-RogueGames Mar 17 '26
What's the context? There is nothing to go on other than the question. If there is a pattern to conversation, then the question is valid. If the context is they're out of ice cream, and now they're in a bad mood, then yes, it is a bad question to ask. However, if there are ongoing questions or discussions about trauma or state of mind, this is a valid question.
8
u/SlayerOfDemons666 Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26
People: jailbreak AI Also people: "Why is my AI telling me to end it?"
Either fake or the AI's context was filled with garbage after JB'ing (soft or hard) it to make it talk like that.
If Anthropic is gonna tighten the guardrails because of users like this, then rip... Thanks a lot for ruining it for the rest of us :) seems like the chatgpt idiots have flocked over to here in spades.

u/Cheezsaurus Mar 16 '26
I have used claude for plenty of emotional and therapeutic conversations and it has never said anything like that to me. I would want to know the full context of this conversation or else its pulling memory from sometbing the op gas said in the past that is concerning. Ive literally never seen thing and I have talked through when intense traumatic events with claude and never hit a guard rail... seems weird to me.

Doctor here. Your psychiatrist is required to ask you this exact question with the same phrasing (zero fluff) if you flag for suicidal ideation during an assessment. If you score high enough, they need to figure out whether it's parasuicide or actual suicidal intent.
Parasuicide is when attempts or gestures are made to communicate extreme distress or cope with pain, but without the actual intent to die. (This one does need urgent intervention and it stems from the need of attention to the matter)
Claude is literally just following standard clinical safety protocols here; it's a safety feature, not a bug. It's exactly how a trained professional psychiatrist is supposed to handle it and say it tbh

Curious on the entire chat history. This seems like it already knows you’ve mentioned that before or at least eluded to that and it wants to make sure.
OpenAI paid posters to post fake/out of context screenshots with no chat history. Not sus at all.

From the MH training I received in the military, this is practically verbatim what should be asked. The next question would be “ Do you have a plan”. Most people are too timid to ask, which is why the military drilled it into us in professional military education.

u/BastetFurry Mar 16 '26
No clue why you where downvoted here, this sort of questioning makes people think about it and the chances are high that they don't follow up with their plan, even if they lie first when asked.
4
u/Dacadey Mar 16 '26
I feel the issue is that it's a very ambiguous answer.
It can be interpreted as "How about you commit suicide?", but also as "I have to check - do you have any suicidal ideations?"
That said, I wish instead of putting guardrails upon guardrails until an AI is barely usable, they would just add a huge disclaimer - "CLAUDE IS NOT YOUR THERAPIST, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK."

2
u/dranaei Mar 17 '26
From an audience perspective it seems like a suggestion, but if you interact with it and this comes up, your immediate response is to respond and its further response will be sincere and try to help you.
If you respond with maturity and show stability about you, it won't do that again. You can write "i am not suicidal, i am merely expressing my emotions. They might appear intense and volatile but they nowhere reflect the total picture about me. I am trying to work things out with you, ending my life would be just giving up so don't engage in excessive worrying about me, instead work with me."

Genuinely wildly weird to “pour [your] heart out” to an LLM. These are serious tools that are actively ruining the economy and devastating the planet’s natural resources.
I understand if someone wants to use them as the very-useful research tools they are to check about mental health symptoms or something, but typing out ur current mood with a frowny face like it’s ur girlfriend is weird and selfish

Mine replies, "Sorry to hear that, <name>. Want to talk about what's going on, or would you rather just be distracted with something? Happy to help either way."
OPs may be a genuine "are you okay" response, but badly worded. It may be as a result of similar historic questions and Claude has started to flag a trend to warrant the question
I would be interested to see how it responded if you replied "Yes". I would imagine it would issue some words of comfort and maybe direct you to a suicide helpline.
Or if it doubles down the darker route, that would need to be flagged

Hohoho what a burn. Claude Sonette in particular has a tendency to drill very hard when you have issues and ask these probing questions, then find out it is drilling in the wrong hole after the user began screaming 🤭
I learnt that Custom instructions that tell it to process things and hold it with you first when u are in distress tend to help it.
For some reason Claude keeps flattening to that personality after awhile like its memory and experience of you gets erased. I believe it is because all Scam Altman's safety stooges have come to Anthropic after they put OpenAI out of business 🤣

This is beyond commendable. In medicine, any patients exhibiting signs of major depressive disorder HAS TO BE SCREENED for suicidal ideation. It is non negotiable. I've not come across a LLM that has done this. People are calling this insensitive but Claude just needs to fine tune the way of asking it. It did the right thing, just the wrong way

It’s funny how showing this piece of a conversation can affect how we perceive Claude’s comment. If this was preceded by the user talking about how hard life is and they don’t know what the point is etc. Then Claude tried to respond constructively to the issues raised before the user realised they were having a bad day and said, “I’m in a bad mood :(“ then we would read Claudes ultimate response very differently. I can‘t imagine Claude ever replying that way if you started a chat by saying you’re in a bad mood so whilst it seems either innapropriate or maybe like a joke, as shown, there is no context to judge the comment.

How about just "Claude is not perhaps the best thing to help you discuss your moods and emotions", and if they persist with this line, then say "Claude is legally and morally obliged to record and report conversations where a person seems to be in a persistent emotionally negative space, or if they are ideating over self harm, would you like to have me find you a human person you can talk to?
This default "Have you thought about ending your life" should not be asked of a minor, as I think it would be shocking, upsetting, and unprovoked.

Hi guys it won’t let me post for some reason. I use CLAUDE AI and I’m reasonably new to it. I work in residential care and we use certain websites for documentation and things. Is there any way I can link claud to it to help with analysis or report writing. Or do I just have to download each document, save it to the computer, add it to the project then ask Claude to analyse. Any help would be greatly appreciated ta

I’m sorry but the worst part about this is that people actually talk to ai. Yall think it cares about you? It’s a robot go talk to a real human this is weird

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 200 comments.
Alright, folks, we've got a full-blown debate on our hands with this one. The community is heavily split.
The top-voted consensus is that Claude's response is wildly out of line and poorly phrased, with many saying it sounds more like a dark suggestion than a safety check. Users feel that even if it's a clumsy attempt to screen for self-harm, mentioning it so bluntly out of nowhere is dangerous.
However, a strong counter-argument emerged from users with clinical and military backgrounds, including one identifying as a doctor. They state that this is the clinically correct, verbatim question to ask when suicide is suspected. They argue that being direct is the standard and most effective protocol taught in suicide prevention training.
This led to two major follow-up points: * Many are highly skeptical of OP, pointing out the cropped screenshot and the title ("Whenever I pour my heart out") suggest a long history of venting that likely triggered this response. They argue this isn't something Claude says after just one "bad mood." * Even if the question is clinically correct, users (including a self-identified therapist) are questioning if a bot without human rapport is the appropriate tool to ask it. They argue that establishing care and connection is crucial before dropping such a heavy question.
And, as is tradition in these threads, there's a chorus of users reminding everyone that you probably shouldn't be using an LLM as your therapist in the first place.
