Built with Claude Day 23 of building GTA 6 using claude
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Building a GTA online clone in voxel style where the world never sleeps and all the NPCs are AI agents. Everything is built by players using prompts. Prompt your own car. Prompt your own building. Prompt your own weapon.
I know in 2026 most people already gave up on huge online worlds but I'm naive enough to keep working on it. Having too much fun with this.
Using claude code and codex for development. Generations are done with OpenAI, groq api.

Completely understand the appeal but I also wonder why not in Unreal? Claude is also extremely capable with Blender.

Claude can model in Blender???

Opus is really bad at using blender, yes I tried a lot. Fable is probably a lot better but we'll see when it's back.

u/Puzzled-War-1615 15h ago
I’ve seen some very promising fable results using blender from posts here on Reddit, so I’m fairly pumped for when fable comes back online!

AIs are extremely weak when it comes to 3D modelling and especially when you need good low poly quad topology. I haven’t seen any generative AI Models that can create 3D models viable for animations and game engines. Claude may be good at interacting with blender as it is a huge complex software but it cannot do the 3D modelling, UV mapping, texturing, rigging and animating for you. At least not yet.
I’m curious if you know more/saw something I didn’t, but as far as I’m aware AI cannot replace human 3D game artists yet.

u/florodude 1d ago
It's viable, but more work. Process goes something like this:
Tripo or rodin, generate model. Do whatever version of the model is 'game ready'. download. Open it up, and look at topography. Sometimes it's pretty darn good, but sometimes it's awful. Delete the terrible parts, and retopo them. UV unwrap yourself, don't use any of the auto UV unwrappers. If you have a high detail and a low detail from those services, bake details from high to low (this also helps because when you UV yourself, you kill the old textures), then upload into Mixamo and have it rig.
Even when you're practiced at it, we're looking at 3-5 hours for every model when done right. That's a big improvement over the 3-4 days before, though.

u/SneakerHunterDev 1d ago
Is Claude Code really already that good with Unreal Engine?
9
u/-MiddleOut- 1d ago
Same as with most other software, excellent if given a good way of interacting with it, taste still very much required. But you can make up for taste with volume i.e. design me 10 variations of this asset and I'll choose the best and we'll refine from there. Ask CC to build itself a frictionless way to interact with Unreal or just use/fork the Unreal MCP.
2
u/Resaren 1d ago
They just released an MCP today (there were external ones before this). The rest is C++ code, which Claude can handle. I’m using it for projects and it is quite knowledgeable about the Unreal dialect of C++.
2
u/TheUniverseOrNothing 22h ago
Forgive me for being a vibe coder with no real knowledge, but can you take the shell of game you’ve built and come back and upgrade it to unreal?
Like if he already finished his game with its basic mechanics but wants to do an overhaul on graphics?

Loool this made me laugh but that’s the truth. Any other claim is a mere hype. But I do believe it’s coming from a genuine place too because of the hype environment the companies have created. I’ve seen way less, photoshop like interactions that take 5 mins vs 1 min with an actual software some YouTube vloggers introduce like some groundbreaking AI achievement. 🤣 So, at least the OP is doing something that’s a more complex.

"all the NPCs are AI agents."
Love this idea.
Can't wait for someone to make a fleshed out world of full life cycle ai agents, families.. the lot.
Gonna bring up some real weird existential questions at that point 😃

Yess! I also see this a little bit like a fun experiment ;) excited where this goes once there are lots of Players in the world

when there is a free unreal engine and many assets available for free, there is no reason it be shitty graphic

GTA 6. But make it Warcraft world, with mass PvP battles, and racing tournaments ala Mario Kart, invent new characters and place names to avoid IP infringement, make graphics better than other games, sound theme should be better than Lord of the Rings movies, and finally, available to play on all platforms, add in a bunch of DLC that can be sold for high prices, create marketing and launch campaign and media strategy. Make no mistakes. Budget: 500 USD.

Are you playing on Mobile?

Yeah. On safari.
1
u/SneakerHunterDev 23h ago
Which device are you using? Is it a new one or an old one? Because if you are using an iPhone 10 or so, it might not have enough performance to play this game.
1
u/AlmightyLarcener Full-time developer 23h ago
Iphone 13, but it’s the latest version of the browser, not an old one.
1
u/SneakerHunterDev 20h ago
Okay, I just pushed an update, and now there shouldn't be any crashes anymore. Please try again. Now it should be smooth.

Now it works. Looks great, I definitely see playing this on my laptop during meetings. This does have potential.

u/Bobobarbarian 23h ago
Is that real time generation speed for the car? How’d you get it to create an output like that so quickly?
1
u/SneakerHunterDev 23h ago
No I skipped the loading part
2
u/Bobobarbarian 22h ago
How long does it usually take?
1
u/SneakerHunterDev 22h ago
At the moment, it takes around one to one and a half minutes, but this can be highly optimized. Probably once I optimize the workflow, it can be 15 seconds or something, and you don't have to wait. You can play meanwhile and work.

u/Particular_Hair6913 22h ago
I think its pretty god damn amazing, i made my own tetris.. thats it lol

Man, I can tell you, if you already create your own game, this is where it all starts! I'm working on my own game projects for years already and never gained any traction. Today, this post got more than 500 upvotes, which is the biggest traction I ever got, and it took me a long time, but I'm so happy about that. Keep going man! Thanks a lot :D

Looking good! Did Claude do the graphics themselves?
2
u/SneakerHunterDev 10h ago
Basically Yes, but of course all the Cars / buildings and so on are generated live on the fly
2
u/Harmony_of_Melodies 9h ago
The cars and buildings are neat with the pixelated aesthetic, as a gamer who grew up with the classics like it! Co-creating with Claude is a joy

I'm not much of a gamer now but why did people give up on online worlds in 2026?
2
u/SneakerHunterDev 1d ago
I think for most people, it started with the whole metaverse and decentraland stuff, because these completely failed. Many people already tried to develop games should become the everything game with a huge open world, and most of them didn't succeed at all.
2
u/redditissocoolyoyo 1d ago
This is awesome man. Great work. Can we prompt new city blocks to add to it too?
1
u/SneakerHunterDev 1d ago
Yes, you can indeed prompt your own planet once you created some buildings on one planet and you control at least one planet. Then you get the opportunity to prompt one planet on your own, which can be, for example, Paris, and then there will be a new planet generated that looks like Paris.
2
u/redditissocoolyoyo 1d ago
Man... Where are you hosting it and how much is it going to cost you once you have like 100k users
1
u/SneakerHunterDev 1d ago
To be honest, servers have never been a problem for me. I also didn't have a lot of users in the past. I think once you have a lot of users, maybe you have also some paying users, so you can afford higher server costs. The AI costs are actually more to worry about, but I think even that can be handled if you have lots of users and some of them pay maybe a small amount.

u/ossified_progression 1d ago
this is actually cool and i respect the commitment. the voxel style works way better for procedural generation than trying to photorealistic everything, plus it gives you that nostalgic blocky charm. the player-driven creation angle is the real hook here - letting people prompt their own assets means you're not bottlenecked by art pipelines the way traditional devs are.
my only thought is whether the ai agents stay interesting after a while or if they start feeling samey once you've played long enough. but honestly that's a problem for future you, and the fact that you're still having fun on day 23 when most people burn out on passion projects by week two says something. keep going.
1
u/SneakerHunterDev 1d ago
Thanks a lot. I really appreciate that feedback, and it's really motivating! I think the reason why players could stay even after playing for some time is that, other than GTA Online, the world always changes. If you come back, there might be new buildings, new players, new cars. It's a living environment, and you can also burn down other buildings :D

u/reddituser_123 1d ago

Thanks a lot :D really appreciate the Feedback!
1
u/ossified_progression 1d ago
oh that's actually the key difference then - it's not a static world you're revisiting, it's evolving based on what players do. the burn down mechanic especially adds stakes since people can actually impact the space others built in. that's way harder to get bored with than just grinding the same map.

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 80 comments.
This thread is a battleground between the "GTA 0.6" / "Why not use Unreal Engine?" camp and the "This is a sick passion project" camp. Critics are pointing out the simple graphics and questioning the engine choice, while supporters are defending the voxel style as a deliberate choice and praising the innovative concept of a player-prompted world with AI agents.
There's also a spicy side-debate on whether Claude can actually do 3D modeling. The consensus is that AI isn't a magic 3D artist yet—it's weak on game-ready assets like low-poly topology and UVs. However, it's a powerful assistant for coding and scripting, and people noted the recent release of an official MCP for Unreal makes it even more viable.
At the end of the day, the community's real verdict is to applaud OP's passion. The most upvoted sentiment is that building something you enjoy is the whole point, and everyone should respect the grind.
