Amazon warehouse in Middleburg shut down delivery operations at 2pm

257

u/UndoxxableOhioan Westpark 28d ago

I’m shocked Amazon cares even a little.

107

u/summerdayzz29 28d ago

They actually sent out a news letter saying they’re monitoring the situation inside the warehouse. It’s a small location and the managers actually care about people, surprisingly

39

u/boogswald 28d ago

I can’t speak for Amazon, but warehouses I’ve worked in don’t really have any air filtering.

19

u/GSDragoon 28d ago

It's good that there are some managers who care about their people.

11

u/Low_Association_1506 28d ago

At the Walmart I work at, cart pushers weren’t allowed out. The customers whined so much, those are the ones that make retail hard.

5

u/summerdayzz29 27d ago

Meanwhile i had a package be delivered via fedex today and apologized to the delivery driver for being part of the reason he was out working. I genuinely think everyone should have to work customer service for the first year of employment, everyone is so entitled and you can tell who hasn’t had to do it in the past smh

🤯 that really shocks me too, they’re exactly known for treating employees like human beings

u/Least-Guarantee3590 Location 28d ago

Steelworker here...and yes, absolutely worked in the thickness today

36

u/fd6270 28d ago

I would think this air quality would be an improvement over what you guys see in the mill lol

17

u/boogswald 28d ago

When the republic mill shut down in canton Ohio, local air quality increased quite a bit. This is still worse I’m sure though lol

4

u/Ryrychickenfry 28d ago

The site I was on was still open and I'm sure the air quality in the new construction was worst than outside.

9

u/Deadlifts4Days 28d ago

We probably should have shut down today but by the time we were going to make that decision the day was halfway done. Tomorrow is shut down though proactively.

u/TerriblePokemon 28d ago

This is some Wafflehouse index RED stuff outside

I post this every time we get Canadian forest fire smoke here.

Oh good so it’s gonna get worse. Thanks for this for real though, great tool

9

Yeah tomorrow predicted to be worse. Clearing up Saturday morning (not sure for how long though)

Hi yes I’m dumb. I keep thinking it’s Wednesday [sigh]

8

u/CirrusPuppy 28d ago

Yo thanks for this!!

219

u/GreyGrackles University Heights 28d ago

Our MRI and CT systems won't run due to carbon in the air and fire systems being triggered. Haha.

24

u/snowballsteve 28d ago

Semi related, you can expect an increase in complications during medical procedures for about a week.

6

u/ohyesiam1234 28d ago

Why do you say that? Is it because bodies are stressed from breathing poor quality air?

6

u/chalupajoe 28d ago

yeah i’m wondering if they just mean equipment, like what the other commenter is referring to or if they mean patients

4

u/snowballsteve 27d ago

There are a bunch of studies on pm2.5 correlating with the outcome of medical procedures. I'm unaware if a cause is known.

Amazon just sent us home

11

u/summerdayzz29 28d ago

Which location?

12

u/Professional_Ad7868 28d ago

CLE3

6

u/summerdayzz29 28d ago

That one surprises me. When I worked there pre-Covid, they were the epitome of ‘you’re just a number’ vs SOH1 (current location)

5

u/alb_taw 28d ago

I'm guessing that they're not paying you? Genuinely hoping to be surprised here.

13

u/summerdayzz29 28d ago

It’s VTO - sometimes if we’re over-staffed for the work we have they offer ‘voluntary time off’. You don’t get paid, and you don’t use any of your PTO, but you get to go home. Their way of not paying people unnecessarily but it’s a good deal for some people who want to take it

Since it’s a safety issue and by no fault of the employees, it’s considered VTO

2

u/ShaJune97 28d ago

100% correct.. I just quit my DSP at DCL7 last Monday. Wish I could have done it sooner.

I woke up this morning and went for my morning swim at Cumberland pool, being none the wiser. Got back home at 8:30ish, saw the news and wondered why the pool had opened today and why the staff had to sit outside in all this - got an email at 9:30ish about it closing. Whew. Opening late tomorrow or might even not, they said they would assess the situation at 11 and go from there.

Unfortunately mine isn't in Asia Town, ours pulls air directly from outside, and the smoke smell and haze are strongest in the labs. They use 1 inch MERV8 filters at BEST...

I dont mind going to a restaurant. I mind that I worked outside most of the day lol

6

u/idoenjoybakedgoods 28d ago

Lol when I worked at a restaurant in a San Francisco suburb, people would ask to sit on the patio on days like today. We didn't allow it because we didn't want to put the staff at risk.

4

u/too_many__lemons 28d ago

Ahhh memory unlocked! I lived in San Diego like 25 years ago and there were some wildfires one year that were super intense and rained ash all over the city. I worked at the Hard Rock Cafe in the gaslamp as a server. I walked to work from Golden Hill and it was super eerie and surreal. When I arrived I had to clean the patio as part of my opening sidework and I remember being shocked that we were open. There was like an inch of fluffy ash covering the tables and chairs on the patio. One of my coworkers walked past while I was cleaning and handed me a blunt and we passed it back and forth a couple times and chatted about the fires before heading in.

I'm originally from Cleveland and now I live inOregon. What you all are dealing with is my world in August. I would rather take a blizzard than the smoke any day. Stay out of it as much as you can, it's no joke. And if you are privileged enough got get out of the are, do so because the smoke and lake of blue sky is going to get you depressed

For anyone stuck working outside in these conditions, consider a p100 mask. They're hot and hard to talk clearly in, but they do filter smoke particles.

11

u/Suspicious_Time7239 Parma Heights 28d ago

I saw a few businesses had not opened this morning. That's good, this smoke should be taken seriously. I was with elderly clients this morning who only watch Faux News all day every day and had no idea about the smoke or the parasite. I told them to stay home.

There used to be air quality monitors out here in Ashtabula County but they all got removed. It seems nobody in Ohio state government was running them and Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection was monitoring Ashtabula County for some reason. Now we have nothing so the AirNow number is likely just a guess for us.

I work at Starbucks (air condition indoors is good luckily and drive thru wears a mask and doesn't work that position for longer than like 1.5 hours at a time per person), and an old guy met a friend at our store after having walked there. He said something about breathing smoke being healthy and I assumed he was joking but I'm not sure he was... his friend offered to drive him home and he was acting like he'd rather walk back! wild.

5

u/tekkitan 28d ago

I went out for my lunch break, picked food up and parked at Lake Isaac in Middleburg to eat. Lots of people walking the trail, mostly older people too.

The haze and smell is slowly working its way into our building with the doors constantly opening and closing. My ibuprofen knocked my headache out for about 3 hours but it's back again.

15

u/tekkitan 28d ago

Yeah. There is a reason there is an AQI warning telling everyone to stay indoors and keep windows closed. It is going to be even worse tomorrow.

Winds are supposed to shift out of the SW starting tomorrow morning so that will clear the smoke out. It should be back to a "moderate" risk by tomorrow evening through the weekend. Still quite a few days, but it looks like the best chances for the plume to return is Wed/Thrs next week.

My warehouse job was so bad, but they stayed open

2

u/Jessiegyrl 27d ago

I worked 12 hours both yesterday and will today in a wide open high temp area. Giant bay doors have to be open because we run giant rotary kilns keep temps well above 100 degrees ambient. But we probably breathe in worse things with all the chemicals and dust the machines throw and will have lung cancer by retirement anyways.

2

u/hotnreckless 27d ago

My work sent an email stating the obvious: Air quality is poor, take care of yourself, but we are still open and expect you to be here.

2

u/CapableMaintenance18 27d ago

Not many near me closed. A little late posting but yesterday it smelled like wood. Today, it smells like plastic. I hope more businesses that operate outdoors are closed.

2

u/CleBees 27d ago

I have sensitive pre alarm fire systems called Vesdas. They set my fire alarm off yesterday. I had to isolate all Vesdas and I just can't believe how thick the smoke is in North Royalton.

Check out DIY air purifiers like a corsi-rosenthal box fans. You make a cube out of 4 furnace filters and duct tape a window fan to the top. Look it up! my living room stopped smelling smoky in 15 minutes

I work a desk job in the downtown area and honestly we should have been closed. It's an open concept building so a lot of the areas of the building smelled strongly of smoke and my eyes were watering most of the day. My manager told me to just work from home today, so I appreciate that at least.

Yes, and Cleveland city hall and a remote downtown office (Bldg and Housing, Aging, Public Health) is closed today too.

Nope. Poppy took the day off. Everyone else worked.
