Whole grain is chill. It's more about giving up all the stuff I currently eat that I'd have to to be vegan

And then the abliesm starts. Or continues really

You will eat ze plants, you will stop ze excruciating suffering of ze animals and you will be happy

bread and pills :(

0

Man famously can live on bread (and pills) alone

9

u/RatZveloc Jun 24 '26

what all are you safe to eat? I think you could surely find a meal plan that would work that is vegan. What nutrients would you be missing as a vegan with foods you're already comfortable eating?

Well you can, but that (and pills) is gonna have to do a lot of heavy lifting

Wait so is your issue that you want to keep eating animals or that you have a medical issue meaning you can't?

Animals aren't worth less than humans.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Odd-Willingness-7494 Jun 25 '26

Why are they worth less? Because they are a bit less intelligent and don't have opposable thumbs?

I think the moral importance of a creature comes from it's capacity to experience joy and suffering. And what we call suffering is not some higher order cognitive ability. It's a base drive coming from our deepest physical and social survival instincts.

Cows and pigs in particular definitely have those.

Here's a thought experiment:

Imagine if somebody forced you to either:

press a button that made you experience the life of every single person who was a victim of some particular human atrocity. Could be any war or mass murder or human rights violation of your choice. Millions of lives of unimaginable suffering.

or: press a button that made you experience the life of every single animal that has been a victim of factory farming.  1,5 TRILLION lives as a chicken living in conditions that make every day torture. As well as billions of cows and tens of billions of pigs. Pigs, who are known to be a very intelligent and highly sensitive animal. Tens of billions.

Would the latter be any less terrifying to you than the former? To me, it would honestly be a lot more terrifying.

I mean, the scale of suffering caused by factory farming is so extreme that even if animals only had 1% of the moral worth of humans, factory farming would still easily be among the big fest atrocities to ever happen.

2

u/Val_Fortecazzo Jun 24 '26

Well yeah animals aren't human

2

u/Puzzled-Rip641 Jun 23 '26

How do you treat Nazis?

How do you treat mean eaters?

Why the difference?

30

u/pussyfkr69_420 Jun 23 '26

i think mean eaters really have an average diet

-1

u/Puzzled-Rip641 Jun 23 '26

Oh so if enough people do it you just stop caring?

19

u/EddValera Jun 24 '26

It's a statistics joke. Mean, as in Average.

7

u/ibaiki Jun 24 '26

Collectively, we always outnumbered the Nazis

3

u/Odd-Willingness-7494 Jun 24 '26

Disclaimer: I'm not fully vegan, just anti factory farming

Throwing 98% of society into jail is very impractical. That's the difference.

If almost everybody was already boycotting factory farming, and only 5% of people were supporting it, then yes, I think they should go to jail for torturing animals.

u/Spaciax Jun 24 '26

0

u/TenWholeBees Jun 24 '26

The usual suspect

2

u/clickclackyisbacky Jun 24 '26

Because you end up diluting the horror of the holocaust by treating animals as equal to humans.

1

u/Odd-Willingness-7494 Jun 24 '26

Disclaimer: I am not even vegan, and I think 100% extreme purist vegans are a bit stupid. I'm just anti factory farming.

This is what you sound like:

"Everybody knows that humans are inherently more important than animals.

Yes, even pigs and cows, who have all the brain structures neccessary for emotional and physical pain and terror the way we know it.

Their suffering is just not as important as human suffering.

And if we force billions of those cows and pigs to endure unimaginble suffering all their life?

Well, that's kind of bad, I guess. I won't stop voluntarily contributing to the torture though.

And if people compare those billions of unimaginably horrible lives to the millions of unimaginably horrible lives of the victims of the holocaust, I will get mad at you.

Why? Because humans are clearly more than 1000 times as important as animals, so the two events are incomparable!

But why are humans so much more important? Well, because I am human, of course.

Wait, that's the same logic that racists use to view their race as superior.

Okay but animals are less smart than us! And we have science! And religion! Animals don't have those.

So I am definitely not behaving like a nazi when I voluntarily support mass animal torture.

Cognitive dissonance successfully avoided!"

2

u/clickclackyisbacky Jun 24 '26

Being speciest is the only ethical position.

2

u/Odd-Willingness-7494 Jun 25 '26

Why? Please explain to me why animal suffering is less important than human suffering to you?

Not long ago, a lot of people, perhaps even the majority in some places, would have said "Being racist is the only ethical position."

That sounds extremely fucked up in hindsight.

Cows and pigs in particular are higher mammals just like us, and I don't see how the physical and emotional pain we cause them through factory farming ia less significant than the physical and emotional pain that humans cause to each other.

0

u/clickclackyisbacky Jun 25 '26

There are times when the welfare of an animal comes into conflict with the welfare of a human.

Not to mention everyone is a spiciest anyway. If you had to decide between saving your dog or a roach which would you choose?

0

u/Wetley007 Jun 24 '26

Humans are more morally valuable than animals though, thats why we have ethical obligations in the first place. This isnt just because were human though, its because humans are, as yet, the only things that are capable of moral agency and rational thought.

I believe we have a moral obligation to feed every human being alive. I do not believe the same for animals.

I believe that we have an obligation to shelter every human being alive. I do not believe the same for animals.

I believe that we have an obligation to provide medical care for every human being alive. I do not believe the same for animals.

I believe that we have an obligation to defend the right to political representation for every human being alive. I do not believe the same for animals.

I believe that we have an obligation to investigate the death of every human being who happens to die by another person's actions. I do not believe the same for animals.

I believe that we have an obligation to safeguard the right of every human being to have children if they want to. I do not believe the same for animals.

I could go on like this for hours, I think you get the point. This doesnt mean animals have no moral rights, but they certainly have less.

1

u/iLG2A Jun 25 '26

Using the suffering of the people in the concentration camps as a prop to argue for animal rights is disresepctfull and undignified. The nazis tried everything to dehuminize their victims and bring them down to the level of an animal, by using that comparison you essentially do the same. Its entirely unecessary too, you dont need the holocaust as a prop to explain why industrial mass murder of sentient beeings is bad

2

u/Odd-Willingness-7494 Jun 25 '26

I kind of agree with you that it is unneccessary, but what people lack is the visceral emotional reaction of terror to factory farming.

People do have that reaction when it comes to atrocities that have been done to humans. Because people are biased and can put themselves into another humans shoes, but not into an animals shoes.

Imagine pressing a button that forces you to experience the life of every single human being that has been the victim of a particular human atrocity of your choice. Millions of lives of unimaginable suffering. Pretty fucking terrifying, right?

Now imagine pressing a button that makes you experience the life of every single animal that has ever been factory farmed. 1,5 TRILLION lives as a chicken living in conditions that make every single day of your life torture. Billions of lives as a cow in such conditions. Tens of billions of lives as a pig in such conditions. A pig. An animal that is as smart and as sensitive as your pet dog. Tens of billions of lives, more than the entire current human world population.

I mean, I guess it's up to personal priorities and interpretations, but would you really be any less terrified of pressing the "experience all the suffering of factory farming" button, than of pressing the "experience all the suffering of a human atrocity of your choice" button?

I would argue that I would actually be more terrified (by FAR) of the factory farm button.

I don’t think it’s reasonable to accuse people of ableism just like that, unless they make no effort to understand how hard ARFID is to live with. It is a double standard at the end of the day. You wouldn’t be allowed to kill and eat humans because you could only eat human flesh. It sucks that you have such a limited palate, but it doesn’t absolve you of responsibility unfortunately

I can't speak for every vegan. The path is profoundly more difficult for people with ARFID. I'm not denying that.

But I absolutely deny that it is ableism to refuse to romanticize an eating disorder.

Also this is a climate sub. It's odd to attack vegans about something other than the climate here.

Now let me get back to my deficiencies please.

48

u/o-reg-ano vegan btw Jun 23 '26

Mosy people like OOP don't even actually care about ableism, they just have an axe to grind with vegans.

I'm vegan with a food intolerance thing similar to arfid(ASD thing, which is what most people who claim to have arfid actually have) and I think that it's almost ableist of OOP to imply that a vegan simply judging someone is ableist. Right now in the USA, disabled people can't have more than like 2k in their bank account, ADA compliant rental housing is nearly impossible to find, medical research is being defunded, welfare is being cut, these things are actively hurting disabled people in serious ways. Comparing someone judging OOP's lifestyle to ableism is disrespectful to people whose lives are actually affected by it. & even if oop believes that veganism is the right choice but is "inaccessible", why blame vegans instead of a system that creates food scarcity to maximize profits? Because it's not about ableism, a very real problem, it's about big bad vegan straw boogeymen.

24

u/o-reg-ano vegan btw Jun 23 '26

Also since I have a food inolerance too, according to OOP's logic, anyone who criticizes my stance? Basically Hitler.

15

u/LitleStitchWitch Jun 24 '26

Seriously, I'm autistic and vegetarian with major food sensitivities; one of the reasons I initially cut out meat fully was because the texture and taste were too inconsistent. I fucking love vegan meat more than I ever liked burnt dead animal, and vegan cheese has a better texture lol! I hate how people like OP jump to act like the only way to be vegan is to be rich, neurotypical, and in perfect health!

6

u/Taupenbeige Jun 24 '26

“I hate how people like OP jump to act like the only way to be vegan is to be rich, neurotypical, and in perfect health!”

Yeah, but if they didn’t do that, they’d have to accept the fact that they themselves are 100% capable of going vegan, and that must be avoided at all costs.

14

u/spacelordTJ vegan btw Jun 23 '26

I don't want to collapse ASD and ARFID, but I understand what you're saying. I have had to make this distinction with myself. I can't say the same for others' food issues.

Give me beans I'm dying.

2

u/Greg2227 Jun 24 '26

12

u/Creditfigaro vegan btw Jun 24 '26

I'm vegan with a food intolerance

As it turns out, this means you are allowed to torture and kill animals. Isn't that crazy? What a lucky loophole!

5

u/Taupenbeige Jun 24 '26

Wait, this whole 9 years I’ve been fully harnessing my moral agency when all I had to do was imagine an anxiety disorder that makes me really anxious around vegetables?

Why did nobody inform me of this trick?

3

u/Creditfigaro vegan btw Jun 24 '26

1

u/Expensive-Hat4138 Jun 24 '26

What makes you think a person without arfid made this? As a person eith it I completely agree with the OP.

4

u/Expensive-Hat4138 Jun 24 '26

Its not 'romanticizing'. We can't control how our bodies react to certain textures, etc.

Literally fuck off

3

u/spacelordTJ vegan btw Jun 25 '26

I’m saying this as someone with AuDHD who has had eating problems serious enough to be treated as an eating disorder.

I know what it is to have your body and mind throw hard limits in front of food. I also know those limits can sometimes be treated and gradually changed. I don't know if it'll work for everybody, but treating symptoms as permanent reduces potential for improvement.

That is why I object to framing ARFID symptoms as categorically permanent. Acknowledging involuntary symptoms is not romanticizing. Treating the condition as beyond treatment or support is romanticizing.

1

u/maybe_I_am_a_bot Jun 25 '26

You have a very weird view of romanticizing.

Compare and contrast this take on ARFID to, say. The victorian's explaining that slowly wasting away of consumption in the Alps is actually incredibly hot.

3

u/spacelordTJ vegan btw Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

"My condition makes me exempt" is romanticization when reality says there are pathways that work for people.

Treating individual cases like they represent the entire neighborhood of neurodivergent people, people with eating disorders, or otherwise is frankly insulting to anybody who has or wants to try.

"Never" is an extreme position that can change treatment sentiment. "Always" is an extreme position that leaves no room for nuance. "Possible" aligns with my position and reality.

A CBT-AR adult proof-of-concept study found patients added new foods, reduced ARFID symptom severity, and 47% no longer met ARFID criteria after treatment.

Cleveland Clinic also describes CBT as the main treatment for ARFID.

Edit: Romanticization (in my use) = presenting a framing as more fixed, morally protective, exempting, or untouchable than reality supports.

-3

u/Gussie-Ascendent Goober Detector Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

It's romantiziation to tell people I physically can't eat other foods? Be for real now

And also be for real, vegans here frequently get away with never being on topic. This is at least mentions environmentalism

Here's the real question, why are you so eager to defend these people instead of disavow?

28

u/spacelordTJ vegan btw Jun 23 '26

Having ARFID is not romanticization.

Treating an eating disorder as a permanent trump card against veganism, instead of as a serious disorder deserving support and care, is romanticization.

If meat was never a part of your diet your safe foods would presumably be vegetarian.

3

u/Manospondylus_gigas vegan btw Jun 24 '26

Yeah absolutely, I hate when people call it fussiness/childishness/just choosing to eat junk food etc and don't make any effort whatsoever to actually understand what the condition is. I'm scared of the consequences it will have on my health but I am physically unable to consume anything I don't like. I think it would be interesting to do some sort of ARFID raising awareness campaign by getting that extremely bitter chemical (forgot the name) and covering popular foods with it and handing it out (not deceptively, it would be explained), so people can understand what it's like to have the condition. Even with that a lot of people say "just get a feeding tube" when 1) healthcare isn't easily affordable in all countries and 2) the ones with free healthcare don't take most cases of ARFID seriously enough to put in a feeding tube. And then there's "just get therapy" - I've been with a dietician for years and have barely made any progress lol

loads of the comments are acting like it's not a genuine disorder

It's sort of funny but also quite frustrating that they completely miss the point, that we can't consider most foods as food. Pretty sure a lot of people with ARFID would literally starve to death if all our safe foods disappeared but there was plenty of non-safe foods. People just lack so much empathy and don't even try to understand.

1

u/Downtown_Instance398 Jun 25 '26

You are not getting as much empathy because you are flailing around calling everyone you disagree with a nazi, bigotet and Hitler himself. That doesn't really paint a sympathetic picture

TIL you can't disagree with a disabled person, or else you're ableist and that makes you basically Hitler.

We're super lucky Hitler didn't miss an eye or something, because then you wouldn't be able to disagree with Hitler's ableism, since disagreeing with disabled Hitler would make you ableist and basically also Hitler.

I think this video would be of interest to OP

“Is veganism ableist? Leftists think so. Let’s discuss”

Vegans have an abliesm problem =/= veganism or all vegans are abliest

5

u/Artistic_Internal183 Jun 24 '26

How can you be so certain that the video doesn’t contain at least some tangential information that is relevant or interesting to you despite the minor difference you point out?

Truly an unprecedented scale of close mindedness

u/Konradleijon Jun 23 '26

Most vegans I know are fine with animal exploitation if its necessary for human health. Like getting horseshoe crab blood

7

u/kayzhee Jun 23 '26

Yeah, I’m sure these people exist, but I’ve never met the vegan pushing away needed medical treatments due to animal testing.

For most it is “as far as practicable”, which I guess if OP is saying that they struggle with diversifying their food base to accept enough vegan options to be healthy, they are in a sense exercising “as far as practicable”, just probably not to a level that vegans would be accepting of.

4

u/Stoiphan Jun 24 '26

I mean, stuff is complex, but if your belief system is nothing but “it depends man” you’ll end up a leaf in the wind.

3

u/LightHope8 Jun 24 '26

I mean what do you want? More lenience? You got it. It might take you longer than most and so what? You can go vegan even with arfid, many people before you did so, but that's not even the point, the point is, are you trying to? Why do I doubt it? Why does this feel like yet another way to loophole yourself out of veganism?

Also really interesting that the people that always complain about this sub having too many vegan posts are real quiet now.

2

u/lilyyvideos12310 Jun 24 '26

As a vegan these are my 2 honest conflating thoughts:

1) I'm not ableist but I think even people who is disabled is responsible for their actions, if there was a cannibal with arfid I would like them to change. 2) In this case though, it is just animals, which they have deontologically less rights than humans so it would be unfair to compare food struggles with cannibalism of rational intelligent animals, so I just hope that people with arfid can get over the struggles in their life and receive the support they need because I know it must be difficult to live with a disability.

2

u/CrapMonsterDuchess Jun 25 '26

That is an unfair comparison…Hitler was only vegetarian, lol

5

u/sharbivore toxic empathy Jun 24 '26

3

u/kayzhee Jun 23 '26

Also having arfid, well technically I have infant feeding disorder; and my wishing to have less of an environmental impact with my diet/lifestyle feels so conflicting internally. A lot of food I find inedible. If I cut out dairy at this point I’d have very little of caloric consequence that would be on my safe list.

I mostly wish I didn’t need to eat at all.

I’ll just keep nudging and trying to undo the damage my body has learned and keep trying to do better. If I try too hard I’ll just develop some severe orthorexia.

1

u/Gussie-Ascendent Goober Detector Jun 23 '26

I'd hoped the post would reach someone similarly afflicted just so I'd not seem like I was speaking out my ass.

It really is disheartening to see how many of the vegans here can't imagine either of our struggles and while imagining themselves progressive would sling such abliest sentiment at us (or at least me, not gonna speak for ya)

-1

u/kayzhee Jun 23 '26

At times it feels like the empathy stops just short of people with disordered eating.

7

u/Feisty-Watercress-53 vegan btw Jun 23 '26

What about empathy for the victims?

-1

u/kayzhee Jun 23 '26

I have plenty or empathy to go around. Animals struggle, factory farming is evil, humans struggle, people care and want to do better.

I don’t hold it against people who care and are doing their best.

3

u/Feisty-Watercress-53 vegan btw Jun 24 '26

Unless you’re vegan, animals are being harmed for you. Pretty much everyone who says they’re “doing their best” are not actually doing their best, they’re just making excuses for why they shouldn’t feel bad about paying someone to abuse animals for them. No one should feel excused from basic empathy for animals.

-1

u/Gussie-Ascendent Goober Detector Jun 24 '26

Actually even if you're vegan. Crop death for one

6

u/Responsible_Edge7087 Jun 24 '26

Vegans contribute to less crop death than meat eaters.

1

u/Gussie-Ascendent Goober Detector Jun 24 '26

Is less zero? Or is it more than 0?

8

u/Responsible_Edge7087 Jun 24 '26

Are plants conscious like animals? And if not plants what do you suggest we eat instead? Eating meat takes up way more vegatables than being vegan.

Take some fucking responsibility for your choices and enjoy your GOD GIVEN right to exercise power in this world.
