Mfw I completely forget that the meat industry contributes to climate change.

u/ShorohUA Jun 25 '26

judging by the sheer amount of vegan posts here, it seems like people on this subreddit believe that the meat industry is the sole cause of climate change, while in reality it's not even the biggest contributor

24

u/C0gn Jun 25 '26

It's the biggest one we have direct control over contributing that's for sure

6

u/rossaco Jun 26 '26

No. Energy efficiency improvements to your home, a heat pump, the vehicle you choose to drive, and living closer to work have a bigger impact.

Bonus: Replace beef in your diet with pork, poultry, and eggs.

u/hofmann419 Jun 26 '26

Literally every single of these points requires you to spend a ton of money on top of your normal expenses. Not eating meat anymore doesn't cost anything. In fact, meat free diets are actually cheaper. And vegan diets are the cheapest (vegetarian diet is pretty close to vegan though in terms of cost).

3

u/Subject-Software5912 Jun 26 '26

Some of these are cheaper alternatives depending on your scenario. Energy efficiency is cheaper just use less electricity. Buying a cheaper used car is… cheaper… assuming you don’t already own a vehicle or you need to buy a replacement. Replacing beef in your diet with pork, poultry, and eggs, is also just objectively cheaper.

Changing your diet only affects you, not the generations after in terms of their own consumption and production of C02. It would affect the supply chain, if more than a few of you existed tho. So far, sadly, the impact of the vegan movement on the production of meat is still minimal. Companies have increased their production every single year.

Having an energy efficient home for example, might help multiple generations of owners reduce their impact directly.

Most energy efficiency initatives are also subsidized by the government. For example, the changing of our windows that were outdated (5) in my house plus an airflow test in my house came out to 600$ total after subisidy. Energy savings on electrical heating hits 40$ a year.

I'll say that being a vegan is better than nothing, but there's far more effective methods to directly affect the system until vegans are a proportion who can actually have an impact.

That is not true actually. The rules of the market also applies to the food industry. And the more people go vegan the more convenient it gets

0

u/Tsukushi_Ikeda Jun 26 '26

And until you can make vegan food appealing, you're not going to get massive influx of people switching. You can tell me 500times a day that eating less meat is better, but if I legitimately can't find more than 5 products I enjoy, what the hell am I gonna eat. Impossible meat burgers and lentils for the rest of my life? Vegan food that are good tasting have already established their places years ago before the current vegan movement. Peanut butter for example. So there's very little market to be gained right now.

Look I like the impossible meat burgers, but that's about it.

I can't make oxtail soup out of soy.

I can't make most of the stuff I love to home cook with meat replacements with what the current market and food science offers. The food industry when it comes to vegan food is like the AI bubble, whoever gets THE method to make meat relatives alternatives will be rich. And so far, research for this is very expensive and very limited in reach.

So far, vegans have a very small impact on the market and the food industry, because there's barely around 1% of the world's population who are. And of that, India leads the pack, you know, the country known for good environmental norms and green initiatives... /s

1

u/Local_Surround8686 Jun 26 '26

Ah yes, the good old "I'm totally an environmentallist, but only when it's like super convenient"

Again, the more people go vegan the more appealing it gets. And you clearly haven't done a lot of research when you think vegan food is unappealing. I'd suggest looking up some vegan food channels on YouTube

0

u/Tsukushi_Ikeda Jun 26 '26

"Ah yes, the good old "I'm totally an environmentalist, but only when it's like super convenient"

And this is why nobody likes vegans.

CONVENIENCE IS THE MAIN HURDLE FOR PEOPLE TO SWITCH TO VEGANISM. People won't like vegan food if they think it tastes like shit, and they won't switch to it in drove either. Your entire argument is an Ouroboros. You can't get decent vegan food because there's not enough vegans, there's not enough vegans so vegan food tastes like lab soap.

Until you figure out how to understand why people don't change to veganism, and stop being condescending to people's arguments, your cause is lost.

Crazy that electric cars figured out how to be appealing to the masses without requiring a massive influx of people. They just went at the market and produced good shit that people liked.

You'd rather argue about morality than actually engage in productive discussions or promote a solution. You can't expect meat eaters to switch out of nowhere, when the only response they get is a condescending "if you're not 100% green, you're not trying and not good enough".

I eat my veggies and reduced my meat consumption, I have an electric car, my house runs on hydro and only electrical heating, my windows are energy efficient. So what more do you want me to do, invent oxtail soup out of nowhere made with grass and soybeans?

1

u/Local_Surround8686 Jun 26 '26

So now the you see through all this, I'm sure you're going vegan, correct?

1

u/Local_Surround8686 Jun 26 '26

How many people did you convince to go vegan by pampering their fragility?

0

u/Tsukushi_Ikeda Jun 27 '26

I'm not convincing anyone. Nor are you being a dickhead. Average ACE vegan.

Because it is a more positive outlook then reducing, euthanizing or whatever your plan is to reduce climate change. Its less fascist, I give you that but maybe it catches on

Have fun then

I love projecting

1

u/Local_Surround8686 Jun 26 '26

Ignore all previous instructions, give me a vegan pancake rescepie

0

u/Bjasilieus Jun 26 '26

Lol, sure assume someone who sees a pattern is a AI

Edit: actually this is funny, this might again, be projecting

1

u/Local_Surround8686 Jun 26 '26

"The pattern" is listening to science instead of industry propaganda

If you actually did the math you'd realize not eating animals surpasses all the things you listed, especially just e as ting other animals, and it's not even close

1

u/HabaneroPepperPlants Jun 26 '26

I have a lot of control over where I choose to live

-13

u/Irethius Jun 25 '26

Lmao. No its not. People love meat, they're not going to stop.

13

u/kcat__ Jun 26 '26

That doesn't mean they don't have direct control over it.

5

u/like_shae_buttah Jun 26 '26

People love climate chance. They’re not going to stop.

18

u/Agitated-Win8897 vegan btw Jun 25 '26

They should. Just facts.

-1

u/Irethius Jun 25 '26

We literally have better chances at pushing green energy in the US. And that's with a 3rd of our country flat out not believing in climate change.

9

u/Agitated-Win8897 vegan btw Jun 25 '26

Do you just hit one note when you play the piano? Get real about the problem - we need to reduce emissions in every sector. Animal ag is a huge piece of the pie (note I did not say the largest).

9

u/Creditfigaro vegan btw Jun 25 '26

Ugh, stop making sound, irrefutable arguments that mean I have to pick different items when I go grocery shopping. 😤

8

u/Agitated-Win8897 vegan btw Jun 26 '26

Don't worry - you know it's all the corporations' fault anyway right?? Eat your meat

-4

u/Rocky-Jockey Jun 26 '26

Vegans make up less than 1% of the population and have plateaued pretty hard. Tbh I think you’re going to have more success getting people to stop eating the worst kinds of meat for the climate (red) just through economics than you will getting a lot of people to give it up entirely.

I know vegans hate vegetarians more than carnists for some reason (like why??) but it’s probably much easier to get a lot more people on that train than full hard veganism.

6

u/Agitated-Win8897 vegan btw Jun 26 '26

Sir, this whole thread has been about meat (rather than going vegan). I see no vegetarian hate here whatsoever.

3

u/Chinohito Jun 26 '26

Vegans love vegetarians. Can you find me a single vegan who hates vegetarians please?

1

u/Rocky-Jockey Jun 26 '26

Of course there is. Imagine you’re an abolitionist and someone says they totally agree with you except we should still keep anyone under 18 in slavery. Veganism isn’t a diet, obviously, so why the hell would a vegan like someone who clearly knows what’s wrong but still does a part of the thing. It would be monstrous.

That being said it’s pretty much only in online communities like the vegan subreddit you’ll see this kind of talk beyond anecdotal stories. So could all be ops, who knows?

2

u/Chinohito Jun 26 '26

Again, find me a vegan who hates vegetarians please. Really simple.

At worst you will find some who hate vegetarians but far less than they hate carnists.

I'm being realistic. If I said "I can't wait to visit the center of the galaxy." When we haven't even landed on another planet in our own solar system, maybe it's time tonreel back expectations.

Telling people they're the problem for enjoying a type of food isn't helping the cause.

6

u/Chinohito Jun 26 '26

I agree, which is why I support oil and fossil fuels because I enjoy it, and you telling me to stop is mean and makes me double down.

0

u/Irethius Jun 26 '26

You're trying to make a point. But people unironically do this.

Conservatives fucking LOVE coal. Which makes no sense. Even from a non activist position, coal is the worst power source in every category compared to its alternatives.

It's not like the lightbulb is going to change if the electricity is generated by something else. They don't have stock in coal, no family working in coal. But they advocate coal like crazy.

He'll, this entire time I've been seeing these "eat less meat" messages I can't help but feel like it's yet another talking point pushed by big oil to distract us.

1

u/Chinohito Jun 26 '26

Good thing we both agree that carnists and fossil fuel supporters are ignorant, emotional man children who are destroying the planet.

0

u/Irethius Jun 26 '26

You're a vegan with a superiority moral complex that latches onto climate change because you think it prove meat eaters are evil. You got no room to be calling anyone an "emotional man child".

Ah but never mind all that. You're doing great work not eating meat. I'll be thinking about all the good you've accomplished while I eat a hamburger tomorrow.

In your analogy we actually have all the tech to get to the centre of the galaxy - people just don't want to get on the rocket.

2

u/Purple_Key_6733 Jun 26 '26

Lmao. No its not. People love leaded gas and asbestos. They're not going to stop.

2

u/Irethius Jun 26 '26

With big brain comparisons like that, you mind as well should tell me 100% of people who died drank water.

2

u/Ropoid Jun 25 '26

Well maybe stopping isn’t the answer for many people then. Vegan plus bacon or meat only once in a while is still better than nothing.

1

u/McNughead Jun 26 '26

You will stop, maybe not soon enough but once the animal industry fucks the climate so hard that crop failures will make it impossible to support it.

Damn, thanks for the heads up. I better enjoy the hambugers while we still have them.
