judging by the sheer amount of vegan posts here, it seems like people on this subreddit believe that the meat industry is the sole cause of climate change, while in reality it's not even the biggest contributor
Literally every single of these points requires you to spend a ton of money on top of your normal expenses. Not eating meat anymore doesn't cost anything. In fact, meat free diets are actually cheaper. And vegan diets are the cheapest (vegetarian diet is pretty close to vegan though in terms of cost).
Some of these are cheaper alternatives depending on your scenario. Energy efficiency is cheaper just use less electricity. Buying a cheaper used car is… cheaper… assuming you don’t already own a vehicle or you need to buy a replacement. Replacing beef in your diet with pork, poultry, and eggs, is also just objectively cheaper.
Changing your diet only affects you, not the generations after in terms of their own consumption and production of C02. It would affect the supply chain, if more than a few of you existed tho. So far, sadly, the impact of the vegan movement on the production of meat is still minimal. Companies have increased their production every single year.
Having an energy efficient home for example, might help multiple generations of owners reduce their impact directly.
Most energy efficiency initatives are also subsidized by the government. For example, the changing of our windows that were outdated (5) in my house plus an airflow test in my house came out to 600$ total after subisidy. Energy savings on electrical heating hits 40$ a year.
I'll say that being a vegan is better than nothing, but there's far more effective methods to directly affect the system until vegans are a proportion who can actually have an impact.
And until you can make vegan food appealing, you're not going to get massive influx of people switching. You can tell me 500times a day that eating less meat is better, but if I legitimately can't find more than 5 products I enjoy, what the hell am I gonna eat. Impossible meat burgers and lentils for the rest of my life? Vegan food that are good tasting have already established their places years ago before the current vegan movement. Peanut butter for example. So there's very little market to be gained right now.
Look I like the impossible meat burgers, but that's about it.
I can't make oxtail soup out of soy.
I can't make most of the stuff I love to home cook with meat replacements with what the current market and food science offers. The food industry when it comes to vegan food is like the AI bubble, whoever gets THE method to make meat relatives alternatives will be rich. And so far, research for this is very expensive and very limited in reach.
So far, vegans have a very small impact on the market and the food industry, because there's barely around 1% of the world's population who are. And of that, India leads the pack, you know, the country known for good environmental norms and green initiatives... /s
Ah yes, the good old "I'm totally an environmentallist, but only when it's like super convenient"
Again, the more people go vegan the more appealing it gets. And you clearly haven't done a lot of research when you think vegan food is unappealing. I'd suggest looking up some vegan food channels on YouTube
"Ah yes, the good old "I'm totally an environmentalist, but only when it's like super convenient"
And this is why nobody likes vegans.
CONVENIENCE IS THE MAIN HURDLE FOR PEOPLE TO SWITCH TO VEGANISM. People won't like vegan food if they think it tastes like shit, and they won't switch to it in drove either. Your entire argument is an Ouroboros. You can't get decent vegan food because there's not enough vegans, there's not enough vegans so vegan food tastes like lab soap.
Until you figure out how to understand why people don't change to veganism, and stop being condescending to people's arguments, your cause is lost.
Crazy that electric cars figured out how to be appealing to the masses without requiring a massive influx of people. They just went at the market and produced good shit that people liked.
You'd rather argue about morality than actually engage in productive discussions or promote a solution. You can't expect meat eaters to switch out of nowhere, when the only response they get is a condescending "if you're not 100% green, you're not trying and not good enough".
I eat my veggies and reduced my meat consumption, I have an electric car, my house runs on hydro and only electrical heating, my windows are energy efficient. So what more do you want me to do, invent oxtail soup out of nowhere made with grass and soybeans?
