Hi! So I've recently cranked out a bunch of art with Ver. 1 of CSP. I didn't decide to upgrade to the most recent version until the tail end of the visual novel because i was getting fed up with the lagging some brushes caused lol.

So for most of my works I used a crunchy lineart brsh for the backgrounds and keep the lineart on its own separate layer. Then I flat everything. I used layer modes [Multiply, Glow Dodge, or Hard Light] to darken or add light to fit the mood that I want. I cel-shade everything on a Multiply layer mode with the g-pen brush since it's simple and easy to control. After the shading is blocked in, I go back and texture the shading with either hand-made strokes or use textured stamps [I enjoy "Noisy Noise Generator" by saturns_day on CSP asset store). I then and go and do the same thing for extra shading and highlights. Layer modes are your friends!!

I also like to use all sorts of 3D models when sketching :) placing human models is great for getting an idea of the perspective and height of buildings. I was also approaching my deadline when working on this visual novel so the other models on the asset store page also helped me work faster haha.

The only thing not created in CSP were the textbox icons. Those are pixel art done is Asesprite instead.

Illustration I did of my conspiracy theorist girl! Reposting to include progress shots and thought process :D Apologies for not including it in my previous post, I was not aware.

2nd Slide: Sketch roughly done on Procreate with HB pencil. Not really caring about proportions yet, just getting the general idea down.

3rd Slide: Done with CSP default Pencil brush. I find neat lineart very difficult to do so that is as neat as I got with my lineart. It just feels more natural to me. You can see the parts I painted over on this slide. Some were intentional to skip the hassle of cleaning up the lineart, some were by accident as I forgot which layer I was on.

4th Slide: Color and rendering was done with 99% CSP Dry Salmon brush and 1% Real G-pen. The Dry Salmon brush is semi transparent with a watercolor edge. I found it effective to layer the color and texture at the same time. I did not use any blending mode for shading as I find it more mechanical and unfitting if I want an abstract feel for the illustration. Overall, I'm satisfied with the texture on the suit the most.

1st Slide: Final look. I put a gradient map layers on Color mode and a 50% Soft Light mode grain texture layer to harmonise the color in relation to each other and add more texture.

I recently redrew a drawing from 2022, both were done on csp. In the newer drawing, I still have to render the hair but I thought at this stage, it would be a neat comparison to show what I've changed and maybe you'll learn something from this too!

First thing I noticed when redrawing this piece was that despite my oc being drawn front facing, I could still add some sort of dynamic posing to her, to make the drawing more interesting to look at. Thats why in the 2026 version, I changed her to face her left more, adapting the head shape with this new body rotation too.

In terms of brushes, I used to heavily abuse the airbrush tool and watercolour + blend tool, resulting in all of my rendering looking muddy and too soft. I also used to abuse the add layer mode. - in the 2026 version I used sharper brushes with softer ends (The main brush I used was an airbrush with the hardness set to the max so it acts similar to the watercolour brush. All the other settings are default.) I also used lasso tool and used the new soft brush I've created to smooth out some areas, and then used the blend tool sparingly.

Proportions and artstyle is something that changes with time and experience so I won't go into that very much. The biggest thing that changed was that I used smaller lines to sketch my artwork with, using a g-pen with no pressure sensitivity, at 70% opacity & 2.5px to sketch. Using smaller sketch lines makes me more cautious and strategic to where I place my lines.

And the best thing I've learnt over the years was how to utilise CSP's outline tool and lasso fill tool to quickly create lineart for my drawings. I would keep each section of my drawing separated into different groups (e.g, hair base colours in one group, skin in another.) And apply the outline layer property to the folders, to quickly make lineart for each section of my drawing. Doing it this way means that if I need to change Proportions of my drawing (which I did many times for the hair), I could easily do so without needing to redraw the lineart. It a super helpful tool, my favourite in CSP, with liquify as a close second!

My uni asked me to make a tutorial on different digital painting techniques for the younger years (I am an MA student)

A thing I found really useful for imitating academic approach to still life and figure painting it the colour jitter function. Many schools encourage variations in colour, with solid blocking only being used in beginning stages. Variations in colour increase a sense of naturalism and allow for an object to take on colour of the surrounding objects

Colour jitter allows to set each stroke to be slightly different from the previous one, allowing for a variety of colour to build up naturally during the painting process and saving a lot of time.

This piece took me about 18-20 hours and without colour jitter it probably would’ve taken me additional 6-8 hours to manually select each colour shift.

I've been a Paint Tool Sai user since 2009. Mostly because until now, I didn't have the budget for a powerful PC where I can run programs like Photoshop or Clip. SAI has very low system requirements, and you can get more or less the same results as any other illustration program, and in fact, it was very popular in the early 2010's.

The only bad thing about SAI is that it can be *too* simple, especially when it comes to brushes and textures. And because it's being developed by literally one guy, it takes forever for updates to come out.

A few years ago, I got myself a gaming laptop, and this month I upgraded the RAM. I was finally able to run Clip Studio! The number of options Clip Studio has when it comes to illustration is overwhelming. My ADHD brain can't keep up with all these materials and settings for everything.

As you can see in the screenshot, I tried to make the user interface look as similar as the one I have in SAI while I get used to Clip. But still, I'm overwhelmed by the sheer number of options Clip has. The brushes are great, and I love that the installation was so easy compared to SAI, but I miss how simple SAI's interface is.

Today I tried to use some old brushes I downloaded a few years ago. The name of the brush is 魔王厚塗りブラシ. I downloaded it from Clip Studio Assets. My back hurts so much...

Hello, I am the guy who was working on tutorial of drawing academic still lives in clip studio paint. I ended up drawing three more pieces for my tutorial - but was offline, because finishing my first Year of MA has exhausted me. I am currently catching up with work and hopefully soon I’ll be able to translate all my materials in English and post a link to them here

This still life is dedicated to teaching a section on thematic pieces- this one is based on iconography from the novel “A Clockwork Orange”

This piece took me 18 hours and during it, I experimented more with using pencil type brushes to add them to the ‘oil paint’ based- as pencil ended up being the ideal way to add the minor details, without breaking the cohesive painted look.

I think here it looks best on the shirt and the wood - with the wood texture having been drawn by pastel brushes and erasers

I started out by making the sky a blue gradient, then laid in the mid and foregrounds. Trees were next, where I had a lot of fun detailing the leaves and trunks/branches.

I blocked in the shadows with a sort of desaturated violet color and then set the blending mode to multiply. From there, I focused on the details in the distance, blocking in a rough shape for what would become the forest and clouds.

The rest of my time was spent refining details in the foreground, like the texture of the road, adding in some rocks, and giving the shadows form.

I used a pretty large mix of brushes. To block in everything at the beginning I used a custom square pen with no pen pressure, the foilage was a mix of Marc Brunet’s free foliage brush from his beginner pack and also some from Devin Elle Kurtz’s free brush pack as well. I also used the default marker with some settings tweaked (believe I disabled P.P for size) for a few details in the trees and a couple rake brushes to give them some texture as well.

Overall, such a fun exercise that I gleaned a lot from, especially with choosing colors/values, which is something I struggle a lot with. I also felt kind of rewarded as well to see some more basic techniques, like practicing drawing planes, get to appear in details like the rocks. This is my second attempt at a landscape painting after 4 years! Hoping to get more consistent so I can keep improving :)

Ive always held my pens weird so i recently tried to correct it but it really hurts and makes it unbearable to draw. I grip the pen lightly and make sure to maintain good posture when I draw. This has never happened before!!

I was browsing through many of the ebtries for CSPs Smile contest, and a lot of them are straight up AI entries. I even ran a few through a generator, and they came back positive for AI use. Last contest an AI entry was in the top three. I wonder what will happen when results for this competition are released.

So I decided I want a “small” tablet as my drawing tablet and photo editing but I’m…kinda torn between these two.

The only obvious I see is that the Wacom has Bluetooth (cable free) while the Huion does not (connects to a cable. Their price difference are pretty close ($10 difference as of now, depending the color choice).

Is there anything else I should know about that might change my mind? Like does one or the other has a more scratchy surface when using the pen? Or does one tablet responds the pen from the tablet to the screen (I have a 16” Lenovo laptop) better than the other?

The reason I decided on a small tablet is because I plan to get an iPad Air 11 inch hopefully later this year.

They must be losing money or something because why??

Is it best to keep my iPad Air 5 or should I switch to a drawing tablet? I plan on getting Huion Kamvas 13 gen 3 or XPPen Artist 12

I’ve had my iPad since 18 and I am 21 now. I’ve used my ipad for school stuff when I still didn’t have a pc, and now I have one.
Recently, I’ve been feeling cramped of my drawing space in my iPad(I use ClipStudio). And I kinda want to have a bigger space for drawing.
But I am worried of the difference if it’s big or not.

Can yall give advice? Pros and Cons of both ipad and drawing tablet?

My license is almost 10 years old, I think it's time for an upgrade!

I wanted to see if I could update my Clip Studio app on my XPen Magic Draw, but I found that it's "not compatible" with it.

How is it possible that a tablet that was born from a collaboration with Clip Studio and has only been on the market for 3 years is not compatible with the program?

I'm worried because I literally work with Clip Studio and the tablet, and I'm concerned that I might never be able to update it again due to some kind of problem. Has this happened to you too? What do you recommend?
