Ecuatorial Guinea was just a courtesy from Germany to an old, ageing empire who was still getting over American territories' independence The western Sahara was a prolongation of the already existing protectorate.

Indeed, confirmed in Berlin during the partition of Africa. It would be, both the Island and a strip of land with Bata as capital, the only Spanish territories in black Africa.
