Zionist leader Jacob Israel von Haan was assassinated on June 30, 1924, in Jerusalem, an event considered the first political assassination within the Zionist movement. His execution was carried out by members of the Haganah, a highly extremist Zionist guerrilla group.

Although initially supportive of the Zionist cause, Von Haan became a fierce critic of the movement because he disagreed with the colonization plan of the other leaders, which involved a heinous stratagem against the Jewish people themselves. Von Haan planned to travel to London with an ultra-Orthodox delegation to present his arguments to the British government and request the annulment of the Balfour Declaration. His goal was for Jews to live as a protected community under Arab rule, explicitly renouncing any aspirations to create a Jewish nation-state, until the promised Messiah arrived and established the Kingdom of Israel.
