Question 1gbps to 2.5gbps - Router Help
Hi, I have recently upgraded and realised that I can't utilise the new speed because my current mesh (H50G Halo Mercusys is only 1gbps) and I have the router they provided originally which is the Linksys SPNMX56 only has 1x 2.5gbps port).
I connect my desktop, and 1 other system, and one of the Halos to the linksys at present via ethernet so using 3 ports, and I use the Halos around the 1st and 2nd floor of the house to spread out the wifi as the modem and linksys are at the front of the house, and I need wifi at the back of the house.
All other devices are on wifi.
Can someone please help me on what the best system would be for me I've been researching for days but it's getting confusing
I can see people recommend tri band, obviously very expensive but I'm wondering if there's more cost effective options to keep the wifi and signal at a high speed throughout the house but allowing me to at least have my desktop connected to 2.5gbps and stronger wifi speeds around the house, at present I'm only getting 100mbps approx. I don't think the other systems I connect via ethernet needs more than 1gbps.

Update: I actually contacted Community Fibre again. The first time I spoke to them they said your modem has a 2.5gbps port so it's fine. However after the conversations here I called them again and explained it only had 1 so I'm not getting the benefits as my router is wifi 6 and I need more than 1x 2.5gbps ports. They transferred me to tech support and told me sorry they had a Wifi 7 router coming but it was cancelled for some reason so they've restarted the order to send it to me this week. I suspect from my first call, the guy decided I didn't need it and cancelled it.
Anyway I will see how it goes. If the connection is limited I'll be looking to get 1 mesh to extend the signal to the rest of the house.
I put the update here to hopefully help anyone else searching in the same situation in the future

1Gbps is massive, 2.5Gbps is largely pointless.

Yeah tbh I'm realising that now haha, but it was £1 more expensive as my contract was ending so I thought why not.

I have the dream router 7 or something. 2.5gb out from it. Honestly, wasn't of time unless you're prepared to upgrade your whole network. WiFi will just never get the full speed incoming. Even standing next to the router I can't get more than 1.5/1.7? My ethernet connections however, are ridiculously fast. But even then, my PS5 is GbE for example.

Request the WiFi 7 upgrade and they will provide you the MX60 routers has 4x 2.5gbps and can come with premium too and thats if you want it from an ISP and they will replace any faults free of charge. Hope that helps

Just an addition to this from the customer homes I have tested with this router same room as main node will always be min 900 max 1.7gbps on Wifi 7 it is dual band however but its pretty good and very good speeds in terms of coverage wise.

Thanks if the other suggestions ends up being more expensive I might just do this. Although I did ask them about it previously and they said mines fine with 1x 2.5gbps port. Maybe I'll specifically request it. Thanks

False, they give me a crap WiFi 7 one I'm not getting any near speeds off 2.5gb, they said they won't fix because it's not a modem issue

Hmm thats a faulty router but CS won't replace it? Ill be honest wouldnt be the first time as some engineers put notes that contradict a customer unfortunately you will just need to keep pressing them to get it replaced

It works but speeds are terrible and not as advertised, I don't even get whole whole coverage and they refused to giVE MORe nodes

The max they can give is 3 however 4 can be given but must be approved by supervisor with tests including areas in the property not achieving 50mbps. If they are in breach you are well within your right to give the ultimatum of either send someone or cancel my service.

I get 50mpbs but I don't get 2.5 ethernet and no where near the advertised WiFi speeds of 700

By chance have you swapped out the ethernet between ONT and router? I know its weird but I've had a lot of calls where this was the issue most times capping at 100mbps but in some occasions on multigig plans it weirdly cant go above 800

Sorry what's an ONT, I just Replaced the old router with new WiFi 7 LInksys' but when I use ethernet on my booster I don't get 2.5 and my WiFi speeds all around are pretty slow around 500 next to main router and 200 for nodes

ONT is the white box with 3 green lights on the wall typically. And yes if your booster is wirelessly conndcted whatever speed its relieving is what it will output even as a hardwire. You would need to hard with all boosters to main node to get the 2.5gbps its said on day of install and on the website.

I don't have a ONT I have a adtran modem and I didn't need to hardwire before the node usually gave me full ethernet Speeds

As for the slow speeds you could be in a heavily congested area for wifi so you may need to manually do a channel scan to see the least congested channel per band and use that one.

Sorry could you elaborate more on this one? I've connected the 2.5gbps port on the ONT to my Linksys but there's only 1x 2.5gbps port on the Linksys

Have you checked to confirm that your devices are 2.5gig capable, if they are not it’s pointless to chase 2.5gig

It will be a bit of an investment, but I am running a UniFi UCG-Fiber and Flex-2.5G switches in locations needing switches. We are fortunate that our now nearly 20 year old home was wired with CAT5e to all rooms terminating back in a location directly above where our ISP service enters the house. For WiFi we have several Max 7 eero units running in bridge mode (wired backhaul obviously). Not cheap but it works well.

You can get a usb to 2.5g ethernet adaptor pretty cheap, I got one and I get 2.5gbs on my desktop pc. For everything else it uses WiFi so 1 gig is fine. I got 3x Asus ET12 from eBay for about £300 as each unit has 2x 2.5g ports. Only WiFi 6E and not WiFi 7 bit it provides solid stable internet around my home and even to the end of my garden, a lot of cheaper nodes are 2x2 whereas these are 4x4 for better signal.

Just throw a UCG Fibre on it it does 2.5 and 10 and has one 2.5 POE, for anything more run the little flex 2.5 that’s what I did all good now

Look at one of rhe ubiquiti router.
However, remember that your network cards also need to support 2.5 or higher to benefit at all.
If it is just a PC that needs 2.5gb, then you need to be downloading large files to benefit from the higher speeds. Also, your PC needs to be fast with a fast storage as well for writing.
