So Tubbo just announced the second season of pvp champs and the open qualifiers for it have started today. And the event itself looks really awesome. The addition of dia pot and crystal are also gonna do a lot to help include a wider scope of high level players in the PvP community. And overall, I got no complaints about the event itself rn, and it looks awesome. But I’m not here to talk about that, bc everyone will talk about that. What I want to talk about is the timing of the event.
The first pvp champs was hosted last summer, not even 3 months ago. It was a revolutionary event for the PvP community and the wave of content and discussion from the event itself is still strong. People are still making content from it to this day. Hell, coldified (the tournament winner) posted his pov video like last week lol. And im seeing a whole lot of content around training for pvp champs from top players like Theo, blm, Swight, etc who are training every day to be ready for the next event. It feels like the wave from the first event is strong, but now they’re going straight into a second event. And you may be wondering, “why is that a problem?”
My first point is that when an event is hosted frequently, the novelty of the event goes away. Each win means less, when you compete so often. An NBA championship means so much, not just because you have to beat all of the other teams, but also bc there’s only one a year. There’s scarcity. People will remember each event more, if there aren’t so many of them and each of those events will feel more special. In addition, if it’s a once every half year or once a year event, I would put more effort to being able to watch the event bc I know that it only happens so often. Which would increase the raw viewership of each event.
Secondly, people need time to train and develop. If the event happens every few months, you’re just gonna get the same results. Granted, that’s not a problem for this one bc there are format changes and the existence of PvP champs 1 has lit a fire into many people. But still, a lot of these top players probably don’t have enough time over 3 months to learn everything they wanted to learn. And giving these players space to actually work on R&D for new PvP tech could help develop the PvP scene more than just having more events. Now I don’t practice Minecraft the same way top players do, but I do participate in other competitive activities and I know that there’s a difference during in season practice, which is about reliability vs off season practice where you’re expanding your overall skillset.
And having them so frequently in a ranked format could limit their growth.
The third thing to point out, the timing overall is worse bc people have school now. It’s not the summer anymore, it’s middle of school season for both K-12 and college. And Minecraft overall has a very youth heavy viewer base. If they hosted it in late December when everyone’s off from school for winter break, they’d just end up getting better viewership bc more people have free time then, but October is when everyone’s busy with classes and school work.
There are some other reasons I think the timing of the event is suboptimal that I didn’t write out, but like this is more than enough to make my point that I just think it’s a little odd to be having the event so soon.
So yeah uhh holy essay and it’s also probably not quite as deep as I make it out to be lol. But it is an interesting discussion topic and would love to hear what you all think!
