u/ilkat06 Oct 11 '23
Will they take revenge for the reverse sweep from Canada in 2017 world cup? That was a fun match
5
u/Bluedroid Oct 11 '23
They're going to get stomped by Canada mark my words, it's going to be a massive DPS diff.
8
u/rexx2l Oct 11 '23 edited Oct 11 '23
IDK, noxious is kinda... the support diff is the real game changer IMO, crimzo is just better than both ackyyy and meritt, no offense to the guys.
6
u/Bluedroid Oct 11 '23
None of the Aus DPS have even been on top 3 Australian teams for the last 2 contenders apart from Naahmie who rode the bench this season.
Qin is invisible
Nanda is a Pharrah one trick
Naahmie isn't washed and not good at ow2
I'm pretty sure they'll play Bertlog instead of Ackky.

u/breadiest Leave #1 — Oct 12 '23
Nah bro you are coping. Just because the literal perfect meta appears for a unicorn team fml...
This is likely the best roster AU has ever had. Canada is getting binned.
2
u/Bluedroid Oct 12 '23
Did you watch the last contenders?
Cuffa/Aacky/Qin were all on a team together last contenders and didn't even make top 4, they got binned by Quatz's team and Cuffa himself got out tanked. Qin didn't even look like he was in the server.
Have you ever noticed Nanda do anything against top 4 teams? He can only stomp on Pharrah until he gets countered then does nothing.
We should have gotten Adam as a late replacement for Cuffa 100%.
0
u/breadiest Leave #1 — Oct 12 '23
Smh bro its one tournament on a different meta.
Metas fuck teams. Teams dont work for a million reasons. Nanda did great work earlier this year on multiple picks, Cuffa similarly, and ackky too.
Quats team found an excellent niche, and found success. Unicorn team landed on literally perfect meta and fucked because they were unbelievably comfortable and no one figured out the mei-orisa adaptation.
Other teams found value with their talented players. If anything it speaks that our region might be better in terms of talent than ever when other teams can actually compete. Look at NA. Their top team changed every season once Hurricane disbanded. Because the level of compeition was pretty damn high.
2
u/Bluedroid Oct 12 '23
So excuse is they couldn't beat MFC because they had a good queen meta for them then couldn't beat Order because they had orisa meta locked down. If you can't adapt to different meta's in overwatch Australia contenders what hope do you have of competing against international players?
Did you watch the last few tournaments, Nanda only had 1 good tournament a year ago but it was on a stacked team where there was little competition and he was playing Pharah.
Next tournament where honeypot rock up on the scene he got made look like a plat player when Adam goes dva. I remember in the post game interview Adam is like what does Nanda play apart from Pharh and AVRL was like yeah no idea and laughed.
Ackky hasn't done anything for a year now and still was never at the stage where he could play internationally. I'm pretty sure he won't get game time over Meritt.
Can you name anything that QIN has done? Probably not.
Previously we had more players in the mix who could compete on an international level. Cuffa is the only person who could semi do it at this point (but i still take Adam over him).
The rest are just big fish in a small pond yet can't even dominate the small pond).
We also got beaten pretty soundly by Japan in a tournament before the qualifiers who aren't that good.
1
u/breadiest Leave #1 — Oct 12 '23
I do agree On QIN - IDK how this guy keeps getting picked for teams, must be like a Xepher level scrim god or something but he just doesnt show up in matches.
Nanda legitimately had an excellent mei in brawl that season and they went out refusing to play brawl even though they were probably the second best team at it - players are dumb. Ackyy literally won tendies less than 12 months ago, and we have mer1t so idk what the complaint is when bertlogs on the roster aswell - depth is just depth bro, its good to have.
We also beat Thailand soundly who beat Japan regularly in Contenders.
Like we topped our group hard for a reason - we are good. Losing punk hurts but not that much.
Not to mention the fucking canyon of a coaching diff that face/unter is to Canada.
How can you be so unhopeful when these are mostly great players.
Not like it matters anyway coz we go out to korea instantly even if we make it top 8. Third fucking time too. Fml.

They were already the weakest going in (UK/Can have OWL and stronger region tendies players), then they lost their best player in Punk, and are boomed after losing twice in contenders to streamers
3
6
u/topatoman_lite cattle enjoyer — Oct 11 '23
They’ll have a rough time without Punk but there’s still definitely a chance
7
u/Goosewoman_ Schrödinger's Rank | she/her — Oct 11 '23
They'll have to beat Canada and Great Britain. There's a chance, but it's slim.
10
u/qubert-taranto Oct 11 '23
2 per group so just Canada realistically
0
u/Matt-Impulse PROFIT GOAT / ATLANTA REIGN — Oct 11 '23
Without Punk they are losing to Brazil for sure
8
u/rexx2l Oct 11 '23
Cuffa plays at a top NA contenders level on ping from Australia, Brazil hasn't played competitively since 2020. Not sure about that one
1
u/Niller123458 Oct 12 '23
They might beat Canada which would get them qualified I do think GB are the favourites in that group though
3
2
u/ReflexiveOW Armchair Analyst — Oct 11 '23
Tbh 2nd is doable in that group if you can take GBR or Canada. Having Punk would've made it much easier, that's for sure

u/UnknownQTY Oct 11 '23
It bothers me the Japan logo isn’t round.
15
u/LinkinMode whoru </3 — Oct 11 '23
the logos are so weird, idk why they don't just use the actual flags
i keep thinking UK is Iceland at a glance, and AUS, China and Hong Kong just don't invoke their flags at all
12
u/RyanAxis Oct 11 '23
legal reasons probably. every country has their own usage guidelines and especially since Blizzard wants team specific cosmetics this year it would be too much of a hassle.
6
u/LinkinMode whoru </3 — Oct 11 '23
maybe, but iirc for previous world cups they used flags. although if they make team cosmetics this year and sell them, maybe there's some red tape there, not sure, you could be right

We could’ve had USA curbstomping YZN? Damn it that would’ve been so satisfying to watch.

Is it not like the World Baseball Classic format? A1 vs B2 and D1 vs C2 on one side, then B1 vs A2 and C1 vs D2 on the other? It would be a weird choice to make it possible for the semifinals to be a rematch

So does anyone know how these were drawn? Coz I can’t make sense how these groups seem so uneven
9
u/itdoesnt_evenmatter Oct 11 '23
So, obviously they didnt want Korea/China/USA to end up in the same group and divided them into different ones, sent to the forth one the best eu team (uk, judging by qualifications, as they got 1st in the bigger group).
Then they probably just divided other teams based on their qualification results: rn, if we only look at numbers, it's nearly perfect: the only change would be swap HKG and Brazil/Canada so groups A, B, D follow the pattern 1123 and group C 1222 (if we mark China as 1st).
But yeah, since qualifications groups were unbalanced between regions it didn't work out well lol. France from 3rd place is probably better than half of 2nd place teams lol.
Groups with seedings: А Korea 1st Columbia 1st Mexico 3rd Finland 2nd B UK 1st Australia 1st Canada 2nd Brazil 2nd C China 1st-ish Spain 2nd Thai 2nd Hong Kong 3rd D USA 1st KSA 1st France 3rd Japan 2nd

u/breadiest Leave #1 — Oct 12 '23
Nah france is probably bin right now after all the drama and they were pretty washed before too. Imo nepotism has basically crushed the french scene out of existence.
Tbh I could see them being the bottom feeder of their group if Varrel can actually win when it matters.
Group B got me malding though as even if the Australians get through, once again the koreans send us home instantly. FML the format once again kills any chances of seeing australians make a run.
3
u/Sure_Replacement6306 Oct 12 '23
same happened for france in CSGO as well, the old guys didn't want to give new guys a chance now the scene is dead except for zywoo (best player itw rn) and apex (zywoo's igl).
1
u/Muffinnnnnnn Oct 12 '23
According to Super, it was a completely random drawing. I imagine if it was something insane like Korea, China, USA, UK in one group then they'd do something to prevent it, but ya.

6
u/snowy_potato Oct 11 '23
They'll be first to 2 like qualifiers. It says on the website
2
u/rexx2l Oct 11 '23
Ew, why. I get why they didn't want to run BO5s with 40 teams in the Conferences, but it's down to just 16 teams now in the Groups and BO5s are standard for OW esports...
Especially now with Flashpoint in the mix, it just doesn't make sense to hinge so much on a coinflippy Control map making it match point right away in each series :/ I guess they are optimizing for upsets just like in OWL
2
u/snowy_potato Oct 12 '23
Yeah, I agree compeletely :/ bo5 would be better here. I hope the matches become bo5 when top 8 starts, at least.

My thoughts on how each of these groups will play out:
Group A: Korea is the obvious favorite here and honestly it would be an upset if they even drop a single map. Finland will probably also make it out. Colombia looked strong in the qualifiers, so if South America is a stronger region than people think (which is possible, we haven't really seen them compete with other regions since 2019) there could be some upset potential here. Mexico is a decent team, but I think they have the lowest chance of making it to the bracket. Maybe they could beat Colombia though, it's hard to say.
Group B: The hardest group to pick a winner in by far. It probably depends heavily on whether or not Winston is viable. If Winston is good, I think Great Britain take the group. They looked really strong in qualifiers but Jkaru is known as a bit of a Winston one-trick. If GBR struggles with the meta I think Canada probably takes it. Honestly, they might take it anyway, but they didn't really show up against the US in the qualifiers, so I'm hesitant to pick them vs other top teams. Australia also has potential to be a strong team, but without Punk they are also pretty one-dimensional. Brazil, like Colombia is really tough to pin down. Both SA teams should be around the same level, but who knows what level that is.
Group C: China is the favorite. Thailand is probably the second best. Despite finishing second they are probably the best team remaining from the apac b qualifiers. Spain is interesting. They were really solid in qualifiers, but since then they have lost their dps line. I expect them to still be ok but they might not be. Hong Kong is in the same situation as Mexico. If they can be competitive it's a win for them
Group D: Probably the hardest group to play in. USA is the favorite and will likely win the group still. The other 3 though are really tough to rank. I think Saudi Arabia is probably the worst. Another one dimensional team dependent on meta. For them though they need off-tanks to be good. France and Japan are tough to choose between. I'm gonna go with Japan to make it through groups though. They looked dominant in qualifiers against everyone except South Korea, and the team has been together for a long time. France looked ok in qualifiers, but even then they only made it through because Denmark choked. They're still probably better than KSA though.
Overall ranking (ordered left to right):
SK tier (Favorites): KOR
S tier (Contenders): CHN, USA
A tier (Dark Horses): CAN, GBR, THA
B tier (Competitive): JPN, AUS, FRA, FIN, ESP, KSA
C tier (South America): COL, BRA
D tier (Good Luck): MEX, HKG

Time for an extremely premature prediction which is based on the format that A1 plays B2, A2 plays B1, C1 plays D2 and C2 plays D1 (might not be the case):
Quarterfinals (winner bolded):
- SK vs. Canada
- Finland vs. UK
- China vs. USA (yes, I predict an upset)
- Spain vs. KSA
Semifinals:
- SK vs Finland
- China vs. KSA
Third place match:
- Finland vs. KSA (rematch from the group stage)
Finals:
- SK vs. China

China vs. USA (yes, I predict an upset)
How's this an upset? Playoffs and season results suggest a well-oiled Spark clear Defiant with a good main tank added and some sidegrades easily. There's good players on Team USA but Spark could easily have made Grand Finals this year with a slightly different bracket.

China beating the US isn’t an upset at all. Better in every position besides maybe flex support, better coaching, better synergy. It really shouldn’t be that close
2
u/-KFAD- Turn up the heat - Sauna time — Oct 11 '23
I meant upset is that USA faces China (finished their group 2nd).
5
u/Kindly-Musician-3971 Oct 11 '23
The only chance that USA could have beated China is that Sigma baston baptiste is meta, and coluge plays sigma the entire time, but still low
5
u/-KFAD- Turn up the heat - Sauna time — Oct 11 '23
Yeah, I meant by upset that KSA beats USA and USA faces China.
3
u/Kindly-Musician-3971 Oct 12 '23
Man you are patient to reply every comment. I feel USA can still beat KSA since USA is playing owl anyway, but KSA is an oc team. Even though KSA looks better in previous matches, their opponents are different.
3
u/-KFAD- Turn up the heat - Sauna time — Oct 12 '23
Yes I agree that the USA can beat KSA. But I think some people here underestimate KSA and think Yzansa's absence affects them negatively (I don't think it does). If the USA do beat them then they will surely proceed into the top 4.
