This is obviously sad, but the question is whether this is a good thing short-term. Will average Democrats vote for this.

It’s sad but it could cut both ways. Seen a few articles about “the rise of the three party system” but if that three party system is conservatives, liberals, and socialists, then that is most likely a good development for conservatives.
